Chapter 11 - THE MAN BEHIND THE MASK

They left the hospital through an underground parking garage.

Marcus had arranged three vehicles.

No one knew which one they would use.

No one knew who could be trusted.

Dominic sat beside Evelyn.

The boys were between them.

Lucas was asleep.

Eli was holding his hand.

Noah was watching the windows.

The three brothers had finally been reunited.

And now, someone wanted to tear them apart.

Dominic looked at Marcus.

“Find Victor.”

“We have teams searching.”

“Not enough.”

Marcus glanced at him.

“Sir, we don't know which Victor is real.”

Dominic's eyes hardened.

“Then find both.”

The SUV moved through the night.

They returned to the blue house.

It had been abandoned.

Victor was gone.

The doctors were gone.

The files were gone.

Only one thing remained.

A black envelope on the kitchen table.

Dominic opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

He stared.

The photograph showed him.

Three years earlier.

The night of the accident.

His car was on the mountain road.

A second vehicle followed behind.

Dominic's expression changed.

He turned the photograph over.

A message was written on the back.

YOU WERE NEVER THE TARGET.

Evelyn stepped closer.

“What is it?”

Dominic handed her the photograph.

She stared.

“What does this mean?”

Dominic looked at Marcus.

“Find the second car.”

Marcus took the photograph.

“We'll trace the license plate.”

“There is no plate.”

“Then the vehicle.”

Dominic turned toward the boys.

Eli and Noah were asleep.

Lucas was awake.

He was staring at the photograph.

Dominic noticed.

“What?”

Lucas pointed.

“That man.”

Dominic looked at the image.

“What man?”

Lucas pointed toward the second vehicle.

“The bad man.”

Dominic froze.

“You saw him?”

Lucas nodded.

“Where?”

Lucas pointed at the photograph.

Then he whispered:

“He came to the blue house.”

Dominic stared.

“Who?”

Lucas looked toward the window.

“The man with Grandpa.”

Dominic's expression hardened.

“Victor.”

Lucas shook his head.

“No.”

Dominic leaned closer.

“Then who?”

Lucas looked at him.

“He wears Grandpa's face.”

The room went silent.

Evelyn's face went pale.

Dominic stared at the boy.

“Tell me.”

Lucas pointed toward the photograph.

“He was there.”

Dominic looked at the second vehicle.

The image was blurry.

But the man standing beside it had the same height.

The same posture.

The same clothing style.

As the man who had claimed to be Victor Vale.

Dominic's blood ran cold.

That man was not his father.

He was an impersonator.

Someone who had spent years pretending to be Victor.

But why?

Marcus's phone rang.

He answered.

Then his face changed.

“Sir.”

Dominic looked at him.

“What?”

“We found the real Victor.”

Dominic's eyes narrowed.

“Where?”

Marcus hesitated.

“In Chicago.”

Dominic went still.

“Alive?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

Marcus looked at the photograph.

“Your old estate.”

Dominic stared.

His father's estate.

The mansion that had burned.

The place Dominic had believed destroyed.

Marcus continued.

“Sir, there's more.”

“What?”

“We found someone else there.”

“Who?”

Marcus looked toward Evelyn.

“Henry Caldwell.”

Evelyn gasped.

“Your father's attorney?”

Dominic felt the world shift.

“Caldwell died four years ago.”

Marcus shook his head.

“He's alive.”

Dominic stared.

“Get me back to Chicago.”

Evelyn grabbed his arm.

“No.”

He looked at her.

“You're staying here.”

“Absolutely not.”

“Evelyn.”

“You found our son.”

Her voice broke.

“I am not letting you go alone again.”

Dominic stared at her.

Then looked toward the three boys.

He understood.

She had already lost him once.

She would not survive losing him again.

“Fine.”

Marcus shook his head.

“Sir, it may be dangerous.”

Dominic looked at him.

“It has been dangerous since the day I was born.”

The plane left Montana before dawn.

On the flight back, Dominic sat beside Evelyn.

Lucas slept between them.

Eli and Noah were across from them.

For the first time, all three boys were together.

Dominic looked at them.

Three sons.

Three years stolen.

One family.

He reached for Evelyn's hand.

She took it.

Neither spoke.

They did not need to.

They had survived too much to pretend the feelings were gone.

But when the plane landed in Chicago, the old estate was waiting.

The mansion had burned.

But the underground structure remained.

Marcus led them through the ruins.

They reached a steel door.

The code worked.

Dominic stared.

“Who still has access?”

Marcus answered.

“Only you.”

Dominic entered.

The underground chamber was lit.

Someone had been living there.

A table was covered with files.

Photographs.

Medical reports.

And a large screen.

Then a voice came from the darkness.

“You finally came home.”

Dominic turned.

An old man stepped into the light.

Henry Caldwell.

Alive.

Older.

But unmistakable.

Dominic raised his weapon.

“You're dead.”

Caldwell smiled.

“So is your father.”

“Where is he?”

“Closer than you think.”

Dominic's eyes narrowed.

Caldwell pointed toward a door.

It opened.

Victor Vale stepped out.

The real Victor.

Dominic stared at him.

For the first time in his life, he saw his father without anger.

Only disbelief.

Victor looked at the three boys.

His eyes stopped on Eli.

Then Lucas.

Then Noah.

He looked exhausted.

“Dominic.”

Dominic's voice was cold.

“You stole my son.”

Victor nodded.

“Yes.”

“You destroyed my life.”

“Yes.”

“You let me believe Evelyn abandoned me.”

“Yes.”

“You faked your death.”

“Yes.”

Dominic raised his gun.

Victor did not move.

“Then give me one reason not to kill you.”

Victor looked at Lucas.

“Because I am the only person who knows why he is dying.”

Dominic froze.

Victor continued.

“And I am the only person who knows who caused the accident.”

Evelyn stepped forward.

“Who?”

Victor looked toward the shadows.

Then said:

“Henry Caldwell.”

Dominic turned.

Caldwell smiled.

Victor continued.

“He betrayed me.”

Caldwell laughed.

“You still blame me?”

“You tried to kill my son.”

“I tried to kill you.”

Dominic stared.

“Why?”

Caldwell's smile disappeared.

“Because your father was never the real power behind the empire.”

Dominic felt the room grow cold.

Caldwell looked at him.

“Your father built the empire.”

Then he smiled.

“But I owned it.”

The lights went out.

A gunshot echoed.

Evelyn screamed.

Dominic reached for her.

Then a second shot rang out.

When the lights came back on, Henry Caldwell was gone.

And Victor Vale was lying on the floor.

Blood spread across his chest.

Dominic stared at his father.

Victor opened his eyes.

Then whispered:

“Take the boys and run.”

Dominic moved toward him.

“Who shot you?”

Victor looked toward the dark exit.

“Your real enemy.”

“Who?”

Victor's breathing became weak.

Then he said one name:

“Evelyn's father.”

Evelyn froze.

“My father is dead.”

Victor looked at her.

“No.”

His eyes closed.

May you like

“He has been alive all along.”

And somewhere in the darkness beneath the ruined mansion, a man was already watching the family he had spent three years trying to destroy.
