Chapter 16 - THE LAST THING DOMINIC HAD TO LEARN

One year later, Dominic and Evelyn stood in a courthouse.
The boys sat in the front row.
Eli wore a blue suit.
Noah wore a gray one.
Lucas wore a small black bow tie.
He kept pulling at it.
Dominic watched them.
He had never imagined this moment.
Not because he had never wanted marriage.
He had.
He had once planned to marry Evelyn before the accident.
But now, standing beside her, he realized something.
The first time he had loved her, he had believed love meant protecting someone from everything.
He had tried to control the world.
He had tried to control danger.
He had tried to control the future.
He had failed.
The second time, he understood.
Love was not control.
It was trust.
Evelyn looked at him.
“Are you nervous?”
Dominic smiled.
“I'm a crime boss.”
She raised an eyebrow.
“Former.”
“Former crime boss.”
“Are you nervous?”
He looked at her.
“Yes.”
She smiled.
“Good.”
The ceremony was small.
No cameras.
No reporters.
No powerful families.
Just the people who mattered.
Marcus stood beside Dominic.
Adrian Cross sat in the back.
He had turned himself in after the truth came out.
His testimony helped expose Victor's network.
He was serving a sentence.
But Dominic had not forgotten that Adrian had helped save the boys.
Forgiveness had not come quickly.
But it had come.
Victor had survived the shooting.
He was now in federal custody.
He had cooperated with authorities.
Dominic visited him once.
Only once.
Victor sat behind glass.
Older.
Smaller.
No longer powerful.
Dominic looked at him.
“You destroyed everything.”
Victor nodded.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Victor stared at him.
“Because I thought if I controlled the future, I could prevent the past.”
Dominic understood more than he wanted to.
He had spent years doing the same thing.
Trying to control everything because he was afraid of losing something.
The difference was that Dominic had finally learned to stop.
Victor looked at him.
“Do you hate me?”
Dominic thought about it.
“No.”
Victor seemed surprised.
Dominic continued.
“I don't forgive what you did.”
“I know.”
“But I don't want to carry you with me anymore.”
Victor lowered his eyes.
That was the last time Dominic saw him.
Now, standing beside Evelyn, Dominic understood the final lesson.
He had spent his entire life trying to become strong.
His father had taught him that strength meant never needing anyone.
The empire had taught him that fear was power.
The accident had taught him that the body could betray you.
The lies had taught him that love could be stolen.
But his children taught him something else.
Strength was asking for help.
Power was choosing not to use it.
And love was staying.
Even when staying was hard.
The officiant smiled.
“You may kiss the bride.”
Dominic looked at Evelyn.
“Finally.”
She laughed.
Then she kissed him.
The boys began cheering.
Marcus applauded.
Adrian cried.
And Dominic Vale, once feared by half the city, smiled like an ordinary man.
Because for the first time in his life—
He was.
After the ceremony, the family gathered outside.
The boys ran across the grass.
Eli chased Noah.
Noah chased Lucas.
Lucas fell.
All three began laughing.
Dominic watched them.
Evelyn stood beside him.
“Are you happy?”
Dominic looked at her.
“Yes.”
“Really?”
He nodded.
“More than I thought was possible.”
She rested her head against his shoulder.
“What do you want now?”
Dominic watched the children.
“A quiet life.”
She smiled.
“You?”
He looked at her.
“Maybe.”
She laughed.
Dominic continued.
“I want to wake up beside you.”
She looked at him.
“I want to hear the boys fight over breakfast.”
She laughed again.
“I want to complain about school meetings.”
“You hate school meetings.”
“I will learn.”
“And?”
Dominic looked toward the children.
“I want to be there.”
Evelyn understood.
May you like
He had missed the first three years.
He would not miss another.
