Chapter 14 - THE LAST LIE
Daniel tried to escape through the underground tunnels.
He did not get far.
Marcus's men surrounded the exits.
Dominic moved forward slowly.
Noah was safe.
Evelyn held him tightly.
The moment she reached her son, she buried her face against his hair.
Noah wrapped his arms around her.
“Mommy.”
“I have you.”
“Daddy came.”
“Yes.”
Dominic looked at him.
“Yes, I did.”
Noah smiled.
Daniel stood at the center of the room.
His empire had collapsed.
His secrets were exposed.
But he still looked calm.
Dominic hated that.
“Tell me everything.”
Daniel smiled.
“You already know.”
“No.”
Dominic moved closer.
“I know what you did.”
He looked toward Evelyn.
“But I don't know why.”
Daniel stared at his daughter.
“Your mother.”
Evelyn froze.
“What about her?”
“She knew.”
Daniel's expression became cold.
“She knew what I was doing.”
Evelyn shook her head.
“No.”
“She helped me.”
“No.”
Daniel smiled.
“You were born into this family.”
Evelyn stared.
“My mother was innocent.”
“Was she?”
Daniel pulled a file from his coat.
He threw it onto the table.
Evelyn picked it up.
Inside were photographs.
Her mother.
Victor.
Daniel.
And a series of medical reports.
Evelyn's hands trembled.
“What is this?”
“Your mother knew about the children.”
Dominic looked at the documents.
“Did she?”
Daniel nodded.
“She helped arrange the hospital.”
Evelyn shook her head.
“No.”
“She believed Lucas was dangerous.”
“Why?”
“Because your mother had seen what the Vale condition did to people.”
Daniel pointed toward Victor.
“Your mother believed the family should end.”
Evelyn stared.
“And you?”
“I believed the family could be perfected.”
Dominic's face hardened.
“You are insane.”
Daniel laughed.
“Maybe.”
He looked at the children.
“But I was right about one thing.”
Dominic moved closer.
“Say it.”
“The three boys are unique.”
Daniel pointed toward Lucas.
“One carries the heart condition.”
Then Eli.
“One carries a resistance.”
Then Noah.
“One carries memory.”
Dominic stared.
Daniel continued.
“Together, they represent the future of both families.”
Evelyn held Noah tighter.
“They are children.”
Daniel looked at her.
“Everything begins as a child.”
Dominic's expression became dangerous.
“Not anymore.”
Daniel smiled.
“You think you can protect them?”
“Yes.”
“You couldn't even protect yourself.”
The words struck hard.
Dominic's jaw tightened.
Daniel continued.
“I put the man behind the second car.”
Dominic froze.
“You caused the accident.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because you were going to leave.”
Dominic stared.
Daniel laughed.
“You were going to take Evelyn and the children away.”
“I didn't know about Lucas.”
“No.”
Daniel's eyes moved toward the boy.
“You didn't.”
“But your father did.”
Dominic's voice became cold.
“Victor knew.”
“Yes.”
“And he let me believe Evelyn abandoned me.”
“Yes.”
Dominic turned toward Victor.
Victor was standing near the doorway.
He looked older than ever.
“I was trying to protect the children.”
Dominic looked at him.
“You allowed Daniel to destroy my life.”
Victor lowered his head.
“Yes.”
Dominic stared.
The anger he had carried for three years suddenly felt different.
It was no longer hot.
It was tired.
“You both made decisions for me.”
Victor said nothing.
“You both decided what I should know.”
Still nothing.
“You both stole my children.”
Daniel smiled.
Victor looked away.
Dominic turned to Evelyn.
“I am sorry.”
She looked at him.
“For what?”
“For believing you left.”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“You were lied to.”
“I still believed it.”
“So did I.”
Dominic reached for her.
She came to him.
They held each other in the middle of the underground room.
For three years, they had loved each other separately.
Now, for the first time, they stood together.
Daniel watched them.
Then he laughed.
“You think love fixes everything?”
Dominic looked at him.
“No.”
He turned toward the police officers entering the room.
“But justice helps.”
Daniel's smile disappeared.
The police arrested him.
He did not resist.
As they took him away, he looked at Noah.
“You will remember me.”
Noah stared at him.
Then shook his head.
“No.”
Daniel stopped.
Noah continued:
“I will remember Mommy.”
The words broke Daniel's expression.
He was taken away.
The last lie was finally over.
But the family still had one crisis left.
Lucas.
His condition was worsening.
The doctors said he needed treatment immediately.
Eli was a possible match.
Dominic refused to make any decision without understanding every risk.
The medical team spent hours reviewing the tests.
Finally, the lead doctor came to him.
“There may be another option.”
Dominic looked up.
“What?”
“Lucas may not need a transplant.”
Evelyn stood.
“Why?”
“His condition is not as severe as Victor believed.”
Dominic stared.
“What does that mean?”
“The original diagnosis was incomplete.”
The doctor showed them the scans.
“Lucas's heart is weak, but not failing in the way we were told.”
“Then why did he collapse?”
“Stress. Medication. Poor treatment.”
Dominic's face hardened.
“Poor treatment?”
The doctor nodded.
“He was given medication designed for a different condition.”
Evelyn's face went pale.
“By whom?”
The doctor looked toward the old files.
“Victor's medical team.”
Dominic closed his eyes.
Victor had stolen Lucas to save him.
And nearly killed him through the treatment.
The doctor continued.
“With proper treatment, Lucas may live a normal life.”
Evelyn began crying.
Dominic pulled her close.
For the first time in three years, the future did not look like a threat.
It looked possible.
Then Lucas walked into the room.
He looked at Dominic.
“Daddy?”
Dominic knelt.
“What?”
“Can I go home?”
Dominic smiled.
“Yes.”
Lucas smiled.
“Where?”
Dominic looked toward Evelyn.
Then Eli.
Then Noah.
“Home.”
For the first time, the word did not mean a mansion.
It did not mean an empire.
