Chapter 13 - The Cabin BetrayalMorning brought fog.

And betrayal.

Lily woke to the smell of coffee and the wrong kind of silence.

Not peaceful silence.

Held-breath silence.

She sat up instantly.

Caleb was already awake on the bed, eyes fixed on the bedroom door.

Denise was gone from the chair where she had been sleeping.

Trevor was gone from the floor.

Marisol was not visible through the window.

Lily signed, Stay.

Caleb gave her an insulted look and reached for his boots.

She threw a pillow at him.

He ignored it.

They moved through the cabin together.

The living room was empty. Coffee dripped in the kitchen. A mug lay shattered near the back door.

On the table sat a note written in Trevor’s shaky handwriting.

I’m sorry. They said they’d kill my mother.

Lily closed her eyes.

Caleb’s face went hard.

Trevor.

“No,” Lily signed. “Meridian.”

Outside, tire tracks cut through the mud.

Denise’s SUV was gone.

Marisol’s radio lay crushed near the porch steps.

Lily’s stomach dropped.

“They took them.”

Caleb signed, And left us alive?

“Not mercy. Bait.”

The cabin phone rang.

Both of them stared at it.

Old landline.

No caller ID.

Lily answered but said nothing.

Elias Vane’s voice filled the line.

“Good morning, Sparrow.”

Caleb watched Lily’s face and understood immediately.

Vane continued, calm as ever. “You have something that belongs to Meridian.”

Lily gripped the receiver.

“I have a lot that belongs to the dead.”

A soft chuckle.

“Still brave when someone else may pay for it?”

Through the line came Denise’s voice, strained but alive.

“Lily, don’t—”

The sound cut off.

Lily’s knuckles whitened.

Vane sighed. “The drive. The tag. Caleb Ror. Bring all three to the old Clearwater Rehabilitation Center by dusk.”

Caleb stepped closer.

Lily repeated the words in sign.

His expression turned lethal.

Vane added, “Come alone, and your friends live. Bring agents, and I start with the doctor who enjoyed recording things.”

Trevor made a muffled sound in the background.

Lily closed her eyes.

Poor, stupid Trevor.

Still trying to become decent and getting punished for it.

“Why Caleb?” Lily asked.

“Because symbols matter. A deaf SEAL accusing Meridian is inconvenient. A deaf SEAL dying while fleeing with an unstable nurse is tragic.”

Lily felt cold clarity settle over her.

“You were always lazy with stories.”

For the first time, Vane’s voice sharpened.

“Dusk.”

The line went dead.

Caleb signed immediately.

Trap.

“Yes.”

We go.

“No.”

His eyes flashed.

She stepped close, signing hard.

“You are injured. They want you there.”

They have Denise.

“I know.”

Marisol.

“I know.”

You.

That stopped her.

His hands moved slower.

They have you because you think you must fix what he broke.

Lily’s breath shook.

Caleb touched two fingers to her wrist scar.

Backup, Sparrow.

She stared at him.

Then she nodded.

They had no phones.

No car.

No official team.

But they had the cabin.

Denise was too smart to leave without resistance. Marisol was too trained not to leave a trail. Trevor was too terrified not to make mistakes.

And Lily Parker had survived by being invisible.

By noon, they found the first clue.

A smear of Denise’s red nail polish on the back gate.

By one, they found a strip of Marisol’s jacket tied to a trail marker.

By two, they found Trevor’s hospital ID half-buried in mud, bent deliberately toward the old highway.

Caleb looked impressed despite himself.

Coward learns fast.

“He had good teachers.”

They stole an old fishing truck from a neighboring shed after Lily left a note promising repayment. Caleb insisted on driving.

Lily laughed in his face.

He signed something rude.

She ignored it.

They reached Clearwater as the sun began to sink.

The old rehabilitation center stood at the edge of the woods, windows boarded, sign rusted, history rotting behind its doors.

Lily looked at Caleb.

“Ready?”

He signed, No.

She blinked.

He continued.

But with you.

May you like

Lily took a breath.

Then Sparrow and the SEAL walked into the place where ghosts were waiting.
