Chapter 7 - The Evidence in the MorgueLily ditched the ambulance six blocks from the hospital behind an abandoned pharmacy.

Denise had packed the trauma bag better than Lily expected: wound supplies, portable oxygen, saline, a pulse oximeter, burner phone, protein bars, and a folded note.

Trust my sister. Call when clear.

Beneath the note was a name.

Marisol Alvarez.

Inspector General.

Caleb sat on the ambulance bench, pale and furious with his own body.

Lily checked his pulse.

“You need a real bed.”

I need the morgue.

“No.”

Evidence.

“You can barely stand.”

Ten men died because everyone waited for permission.

Lily hated that sentence because it was true.

Trevor sat near the back doors, hugging his knees. “Can we maybe choose a plan that involves fewer crimes?”

Caleb looked at him.

Trevor swallowed. “Never mind.”

Lily rubbed both hands over her face.

The morgue at Franklin VA was in the basement. During a fire alarm evacuation, access would be chaotic but not impossible. The evidence Caleb needed was hidden there because dead men were the only witnesses Franklin did not expect to speak.

“What exactly are we looking for?” Lily asked.

Caleb signed, Aaron’s final file.

“Your teammate hid it in the morgue?”

Aaron was dying. He worked there part-time after discharge. He knew bodies were ignored once tagged and stored.

Lily felt a wave of grief for a man she had never met.

“Where?”

Caleb signed, Cold drawer 9. Behind nameplate.

Trevor made a noise. “I deeply hate that I understood that.”

They waited until the first wave of fire response cleared, then returned through a service entrance using the stolen paramedic jacket and a badge taken from one of the stairwell attackers.

Lily pushed Caleb in a wheelchair this time.

He hated it.

She did not care.

You look too pleased, he signed.

“You look like a patient.”

I am a SEAL.

“You are a SEAL in a wheelchair with a tube in his chest. Be humble.”

Trevor actually laughed.

Caleb glared at him.

They reached the basement through a freight elevator. The morgue corridor was cold and empty, lit by buzzing fluorescent lights.

Lily’s skin prickled.

Places that held the dead always felt honest to her.

No pretending.

No politics.

No performance.

Just endings.

Trevor kept watch at the door while Lily wheeled Caleb inside.

Drawer 9 belonged to Aaron Voss.

His name sat behind scratched plastic.

Caleb stared at it for a long time.

Lily touched his shoulder lightly.

He did not pull away.

Then he signed, Open it.

She removed the nameplate.

Behind it, taped against the metal, was a small black drive wrapped in plastic.

Lily took it.

Caleb closed his eyes.

For one moment, the warrior vanished, and there was only a grieving friend.

Lily signed softly.

He did it.

Caleb nodded once.

Then a voice came from the doorway.

“Yes,” Dr. Concincaid said. “And now you have too.”

Trevor stood beside him with a red mark blooming on his cheek.

Two armed security officers flanked the doctor.

Lily slid the drive into her sleeve.

Concincaid smiled.

“Did you really think a rookie nurse could outmaneuver a federal medical center?”

Caleb’s fingers moved slowly.

Lily translated, even though she hated giving Concincaid his words.

“He says you are not the federal medical center. You are just the man Meridian bought on sale.”

One guard stepped forward.

Concincaid’s smile vanished.

“You have no idea what Meridian protects this country from.”

Lily looked at Aaron’s drawer.

“Accountability?”

Concincaid’s eyes sharpened. “Hand over the drive.”

“What drive?”

He sighed. “Miss Parker, I know who you were.”

For the first time, Lily allowed herself to smile.

“No, doctor. You know who they failed to kill.”

The lights cut out.

Darkness swallowed the morgue.

For one breath, nobody moved.

Then Trevor screamed, “I didn’t do it!”

A second later, emergency lights came on.

And standing behind Concincaid was Denise Alvarez with three federal agents.

Her sister Marisol stepped forward, badge in hand.

“Dr. Concincaid,” she said, “step away from the nurse.”

Concincaid’s face went slack.

Caleb looked at Lily.

May you like

Lily looked back.

For the first time, neither of them was alone.
