Chapter 9 - The Contractor’s WarningMeridian Shield did not threaten loudly.

They sent flowers.

White lilies arrived at the secure facility the next morning with no sender’s name.

Lily saw them at the nurses’ station and stopped so abruptly that the agent behind her nearly bumped into her.

The card had one sentence.

Sparrows belong in the ground.

Caleb read it from across the room.

His face went empty.

That scared Lily more than anger.

Marisol ordered the flowers removed, tested, photographed, and logged.

Caleb signed, They know where we are.

Marisol replied before Lily could translate. “Then we move you.”

Caleb’s eyes cut to her.

“You sign?”

Marisol smiled. “My sister made sure I learned enough not to embarrass the family.”

Caleb did not smile back.

Moving makes us predictable.

Marisol nodded. “Staying makes us visible.”

Lily looked at the card.

Meridian had found her again.

Years of hiding. Years of careful names and quiet apartments and never staying too long at any one job. All gone because she had refused to let a man die in Room 12.

She expected regret.

None came.

That surprised her.

Caleb watched her.

You are thinking too loudly.

“I’m thinking you’re impossible.”

You knew that yesterday.

Marisol interrupted. “We have a hearing in forty-eight hours. Closed federal session. Caleb testifies. Lily confirms communication access and medical interference. Trevor authenticates the video. Denise provides chain of custody.”

“And Concincaid?” Lily asked.

“Talking.”

Caleb’s eyes sharpened.

Marisol nodded. “He wants a deal. Claims Meridian directed everything through a man named Elias Vane.”

Lily felt the name before she understood it.

Caleb noticed.

You know him.

Lily’s fingers curled.

“Black Glass commander.”

Marisol’s expression shifted. “Your file says Captain Elias Vane died overseas.”

“My file says I died too.”

No one spoke.

The room felt suddenly smaller.

Elias Vane.

The man who had given the order to divert the convoy.

The man who told Lily the crates contained field medicine.

The man who left her locked inside a burning warehouse because she saw the labels.

Alive.

Working with Meridian.

And now sending flowers.

Caleb signed slowly.

He hurt you.

Lily did not answer.

Caleb’s jaw tightened.

I will end him.

“No,” Lily signed sharply. “You will heal.”

Same mission.

“No. Different.”

He leaned forward despite the pain.

He thinks you are still scared.

Lily’s hands trembled.

“I am.”

Caleb’s anger softened into something gentler.

Then be scared with backup.

Those four words nearly broke her.

She had been scared alone for so long that the idea of backup felt unreal.

A knock came at the door.

An agent entered holding a tablet.

“Ma’am, there’s a live broadcast you need to see.”

Marisol took it.

On the screen, a press conference had begun outside Franklin VA. Harlan Price stood before cameras with grief arranged carefully on his face.

“Last night,” Price said, “a disturbed veteran was unlawfully removed from care by a recently hired nurse whose credentials are now under review.”

Lily went cold.

Beside Price stood a framed photo of Caleb.

The headline below read:

DEAF NAVY SEAL ABDUCTED FROM VA HOSPITAL.

Caleb stared at the screen.

Then at Lily.

Trevor’s video was not public yet.

Aaron’s drive was not public yet.

Meridian had moved first.

They were not trying to kill Caleb now.

They were trying to turn him into a victim of Lily Parker.

Marisol swore under her breath.

Lily looked at the screen where her employee photo appeared next to Caleb’s.

Rookie Nurse Wanted for Questioning.

Caleb signed one sentence.

They made you the villain.

Lily watched her face spread across the news.

Then she stood.

“No,” she said.

Everyone looked at her.

May you like

Lily’s voice was quiet, but Sparrow stood inside it.

“They made their first mistake.”
