Chapter 5 - THE VAULT BENEATH HALE HOUSEHale House had stood above the Massachusetts coastline for ninety-three years.

It was enough.
When it ended, the ballroom erupted.
Guests stood.
Reporters moved toward exits.
Someone shouted that police were arriving.
Diane Carlisle disappeared.
Alexander realized it two minutes later.
"Where is she?"
Vanessa looked around.
Her mother was gone.
Claire was being loaded onto a stretcher by paramedics when Alexander reached her.
"Where would she go?"
Claire typed.
"Not my problem."
"It becomes your problem if she destroys evidence."
Claire looked at him.
"You had three years."
Alexander flinched.
Then one of the elevators chimed.
A man stepped out.
Dark suit.
Gray tie.
Lean face.
A thin scar across his left eyebrow.
Alexander stopped.
"Ethan."
Ethan Cole walked toward them.
For years, Alexander had believed Ethan fled the country after stealing confidential documents.
The truth was very different.
Ethan had disappeared because two men had tried to force his car off a bridge outside Providence.
He had survived.
And spent the following three years building a case.
"Hello, Alexander."
Alexander's fists tightened.
"You did this."
Ethan glanced toward Claire.
"No."
Then back at Alexander.
"She did."
Police entered the lobby.
Ethan continued.
"I simply made sure nobody could bury it."
Vanessa approached.
"Was that recording real?"
"Yes."
"My mother ordered Claire's accident?"
Ethan's expression softened slightly.
"She ordered something."
"That's not an answer."
"Because I don't have the whole answer."
Alexander looked toward Claire.
"What does that mean?"
Ethan lowered his voice.
"The man Diane spoke to wasn't the driver."
"Who was he?"
"Your former head of corporate security."
Alexander's face changed.
"Thomas Rourke?"
Ethan nodded.
Rourke had died eighteen months earlier in what police called a boating accident.
Alexander stared.
"Rourke is dead."
"Which makes him convenient."
Claire was moved toward the ambulance.
Ethan followed.
Alexander caught his arm.
"What else do you have?"
Ethan looked down at the hand.
Alexander released him.
"Enough to force the audit."
"Enough to destroy my company?"
"I don't care about destroying your company."
"You just froze our credit."
"I froze the accounts used to pay for crimes."
Alexander stared.
Ethan stepped closer.
"There's a difference."
The ambulance doors closed around Claire.
Ethan climbed inside.
Alexander stood in the hotel driveway as the vehicle pulled away.
Vanessa remained behind him.
"My mother tried to kill your ex-wife."
"We don't know that yet."
"Stop."
Alexander turned.
Vanessa was crying.
"Stop protecting everyone."
"I'm not."
"You protected Claire's doctors. You protected the company. You protected whatever those payments were."
"I didn't know."
"That's the problem."
Alexander's face tightened.
"What does that mean?"
"It means you never wanted to know."
She removed her wedding ring.
Alexander stared.
"Vanessa."
She held it in her palm.
"We've been married for three hours."
"Don't do this."
"My mother assaulted a disabled woman at our reception."
"Diane is not us."
"No. But your silence is."
She placed the ring on the hood of his car.
Then walked away.
At the hospital, doctors treated Claire's burns and replaced the damaged feeding connection.
Ethan sat outside her room.
At 2:16 a.m., Claire's physician allowed him inside.
Claire looked exhausted.
Ethan pulled a chair beside her.
"You scared me tonight."
She typed.
"Worked."
"Yes."
A faint smile.
Then Ethan's expression grew serious.
"Diane ran."
Claire nodded.
"Police found her car at the airport."
Claire typed.
"She won't leave."
"Why?"
"Because she needs something."
"What?"
Claire looked toward her wheelchair.
Ethan followed her gaze.
He opened a hidden compartment beneath the armrest.
Inside was a small brass key.
Ethan frowned.
"What is this?"
Claire typed.
"Grandfather's vault."
Alexander's grandfather, William Hale, had died six years earlier.
Founder of Hale Meridian.
Legendary industrialist.
And one of the few members of Alexander's family who had respected Claire.
Ethan stared at the key.
"I thought the estate vault was emptied after he died."
"It wasn't."
"What's inside?"
Claire typed.
"Proof."
"Of the accident?"
"No."
She paused.
"Of why they needed the accident."
Ethan leaned closer.
Claire continued.
"The medical division wasn't built on my patents."
Ethan frowned.
"It absolutely was."
"Not only mine."
She looked directly at him.
"William Hale discovered something."
"What?"
Claire typed slowly.
"Alexander's father had been stealing research."
Ethan went still.
"From where?"
"Veterans hospitals. University labs. Small inventors."
"How much?"
"Decades."
Ethan stared at her.
Claire typed again.
"My patents would have exposed the chain of ownership."
"And if you went to the board—"
"The company could lose everything."
Ethan looked toward the door.
"So Diane wasn't protecting Alexander's wedding."
Claire shook her head.
"She was protecting an empire built on stolen work."
Ethan held up the brass key.
"Where is the vault?"
Claire typed the answer.
Under Hale House.
Forty miles away, headlights swept across the gates of the Hale family's private estate.
A black sedan stopped.

Diane Carlisle stepped out.
And in her hand was a pistol.
