Chapter 7 - THE BILLIONAIRE WHO RANClaire refused to believe the obvious explanation.

He hit the floor beside the steel cabinet.

Claire tried to move toward him.

Alexander reached him first.

"Pressure!"

Detective Voss tackled Diane against the wall.

The pistol skidded across the floor.

Vanessa kicked it away.

Diane screamed as handcuffs closed around her wrists.

"You don't understand!"

Claire didn't look at her.

Her eyes stayed on Ethan.

Blood spread through his shirt.

Alexander pressed both hands over the wound.

"Stay with me."

Ethan managed a weak laugh.

"Didn't expect that from you."

"Shut up."

Paramedics arrived within minutes.

As they carried Ethan toward the elevator, he looked at Claire.

"It's all uploaded."

Claire understood.

The vault files.

The confession.

Diane's admission.

Everything had been copied to secure servers.

There would be no burying it now.

By noon, the story dominated national news.

Hale Meridian's stock fell thirty-seven percent before trading was halted.

Federal prosecutors announced an investigation.

The board suspended Alexander as CEO.

Diane Carlisle was charged with assault, obstruction and conspiracy while investigators reopened Claire's crash.

Alexander sat alone in the library.

Vanessa found him there.

He looked destroyed.

"My father did it."

Vanessa sat across from him.

"I know."

"I spent three years blaming Claire for disappearing."

"She didn't disappear."

"I told myself she stopped being my wife."

Vanessa said nothing.

Alexander stared at his hands.

"When she couldn't speak after the accident, I couldn't stand being in the room."

Vanessa looked at him.

"Why?"

"Because she looked at me like she knew I was weak."

"No."

He met her eyes.

"Because you knew."

Alexander's expression tightened.

"Knew what?"

"That something was wrong."

He looked away.

Vanessa continued.

"You knew the doctors were strange. You knew your lawyers moved too fast. You knew her shares were transferred too quickly."

"I didn't know about the crash."

"But you benefited from everything after it."

Alexander whispered, "Yes."

That word cost him more than any stock loss.

At the hospital, Ethan survived surgery.

Claire remained outside his room.

Detective Voss approached.

"We found additional evidence."

Claire typed.

"What?"

"Northcrest Rehabilitation."

Claire's hand stopped.

Voss sat beside her.

"The facility wasn't simply restricting your communications."

Claire's eyes sharpened.

"They were falsifying cognitive evaluations."

Claire stared.

Voss continued.

"Doctors were paid to declare you incompetent."

Claire typed.

"I knew."

"There's more."

Voss hesitated.

"They administered medication that wasn't medically necessary."

Claire's expression changed.

"Sedatives?"

"Yes. Strong ones."

Claire closed her eyes.

Memory returned in fragments.

Lost afternoons.

Heavy limbs.

Words she couldn't form.

Visitors she barely remembered.

Voss said quietly, "We believe someone wanted you permanently unable to testify."

Claire typed.

"Diane?"

"We don't know."

A nurse approached.

"Ethan's awake."

Claire entered his room.

Ethan looked pale.

"You look terrible," Claire's screen said.

He smiled.

"Good to see your bedside manner survived."

Claire positioned her wheelchair beside him.

Ethan's smile faded.

"There's something I never told you."

She waited.

"William Hale didn't contact me after your accident."

Claire frowned.

"He contacted me before it."

Her fingers froze.

Ethan continued.

"He suspected Richard was watching you."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"I tried."

"When?"

"The morning of your crash."

Claire stared.

"I called twelve times."

Claire remembered.

Her phone had been missing that morning.

Ethan looked away.

"I've blamed myself for three years."

Claire typed.

"Don't."

"I could've gone to your house."

"Don't."

"I could've stopped you driving."

Claire reached out.

Her fingers touched his hand.

He looked at her.

She typed with her other hand.

"You came back."

His eyes filled.

"So did you."

For the first time in years, Claire smiled without forcing it.

But the moment didn't last.

Detective Voss entered quickly.

"We have a problem."

"What?"

She held up a phone.

"Someone just accessed the restitution trust."

Ethan struggled upright.

"Impossible."

"Two billion dollars has been moved."

Claire stared.

"Where?"

"Offshore."

Ethan's face changed.

"Only four people had the authorization structure."

"William is dead."

"Richard is dead."

Claire typed.

"Diane is in custody."

They all reached the same conclusion.

One name remained.

Alexander.
