Chapter 8 - THE PEOPLE BEHIND THE HALE NAMEThe kidnappers made no ransom demand.

Alexander had betrayed her in more ways than she could count.

But theft?

Two billion dollars?

The restitution money his grandfather had created?

Something didn't fit.

Ethan agreed.

"Alexander is arrogant," he said from his hospital bed. "He's cowardly. He's made catastrophic choices."

Claire looked at him.

"But?"

"But he isn't stupid enough to transfer stolen funds under credentials linked directly to his name."

Detective Voss crossed her arms.

"The jet is real."

"Where is it now?"

"Atlantic airspace."

Claire typed.

"Call him."

Voss shook her head.

"Phone off."

Claire's eyes narrowed.

"Vanessa."

Vanessa arrived twenty minutes later.

Her wedding dress had been replaced by jeans and a sweater.

She looked like someone who had aged years overnight.

Claire asked one question.

"Did Alexander say where he was going?"

Vanessa shook her head.

"He left me a voicemail."

"Play it."

Alexander's voice filled the room.

"Vanessa, don't believe what comes next. I'm going to fix something my father started. Stay away from Hale Meridian headquarters. And whatever happens, trust Claire."

Vanessa stopped the recording.

Ethan looked at Claire.

"That doesn't sound like a man stealing money."

Claire typed.

"Track the destination."

The jet changed course two hours later.

Not Switzerland.

Geneva had been a false flight plan.

Alexander landed in Iceland.

Then boarded a charter plane registered to a humanitarian foundation.

By the time investigators realized where he was going, he had vanished again.

Meanwhile, Hale Meridian deteriorated.

Customers suspended contracts.

Board members resigned.

Protesters gathered outside offices in Boston, Chicago and Seattle.

Thousands of employees feared layoffs.

Claire watched coverage from the hospital.

She didn't celebrate.

Ethan noticed.

"You wanted accountability."

"Not unemployment."

"Then what?"

Claire typed.

"We save the company."

He stared.

She continued.

"We destroy the empire."

"Difference?"

"An empire protects a family."

Her eyes held his.

"A company should protect the people who built it."

Ethan smiled faintly.

"There's the Claire I remember."

They began working.

Using William's records, Claire identified which patents were legitimately hers and which had been stolen.

Instead of liquidating Hale Meridian, she proposed dividing its medical division into a public-benefit corporation.

Original inventors and institutions would receive equity.

Employees would keep their jobs.

Victims would receive restitution.

The Hale family would lose control.

The board hated it.

Claire expected that.

At an emergency meeting, several directors argued she lacked authority.

Then Ethan produced William's final trust amendment.

Claire owned twenty-six percent of the voting rights.

They had never legally transferred.

Her alleged incompetency invalidated the trustee assignment.

Claire was the single largest legitimate voting shareholder.

The room went silent.

One director whispered, "You can remove all of us."

Claire typed.

"Yes."

Three directors resigned immediately.

The others stayed.

Then Alexander called.

The connection was encrypted.

His face appeared on Claire's tablet.

He was inside a dim warehouse.

"Claire."

She stared at him.

"Where are you?"

"Estonia."

Ethan nearly laughed.

"You took a private jet halfway across the world during a federal investigation?"

Alexander ignored him.

"The two billion wasn't stolen."

Claire typed.

"Explain."

"My father created a second network."

"What network?"

"Accounts."

Alexander held up a folder.

"He hid restitution funds inside fake acquisition companies. When the audit triggered, an automated protocol moved everything."

Ethan frowned.

"To where?"

"An asset custodian in Tallinn."

"Who controls it?"

Alexander looked directly at Claire.

"You do."

Claire went still.

"What?"

"My grandfather designated you years ago."

"Then why did your credentials access it?"

"Because my father disguised you as an internal subsidiary."

Ethan muttered, "That's insane."

Alexander nodded.

"Welcome to my family."

Claire typed.

"Come back."

"I will."

"When?"

"When I have the master ledger."

"What ledger?"

Alexander's expression changed.

"The one that proves my father wasn't working alone."

Before Claire could respond, the warehouse lights went out.

Alexander turned.

A door slammed.

Someone shouted offscreen.

The video shook.

Then a man's voice said:

"Mr. Hale, your father warned us you might eventually grow a conscience."

The connection died.

Vanessa stared at the black screen.

Claire's fingers hovered over her keyboard.

Ethan whispered, "Whoever helped Richard is still alive."

May you like

Claire typed.

"And they have Alexander."
