Chapter 13 - THE LAST WEAPON

Arthur's final weapon was Victoria.
He claimed she had helped him manipulate Daniel.
He accused her of participating in the fraud.
The evidence was circumstantial.
But it was enough to destroy her reputation.
Daniel wanted to help.
Victoria refused.
“I made my choices.”
“You didn't know everything.”
“I knew enough.”
She looked at him.
“I cannot pretend I was innocent.”
Evelyn agreed.
“Then don't.”
Victoria looked at her.
“What should I do?”
“Tell the truth.”
Victoria testified.
She told the court about the hidden invitation.
The marriage plan.
The family pressure.
The conversations she had overheard.
She admitted her own cruelty.
“I thought wealth made me important,” she said.
“It made me blind.”
Her testimony changed everything.
Arthur's defense collapsed.
But after the hearing, Victoria walked outside alone.
Daniel followed.
“You were brave.”
She laughed softly.
“No.”
“Yes.”
“I was terrified.”
“Bravery is being terrified and telling the truth anyway.”
Victoria looked at him.
“Your mother taught you that?”
“No.”
He smiled faintly.
“She taught me everything else.”
Victoria looked toward Evelyn.
Evelyn stood beside Lydia.
The two women were talking.
Lydia had accepted Evelyn as family.
The reunion had not been easy.
There were questions.
Anger.
Pain.
But there was also love.
Daniel turned back to Victoria.
“What happens now?”
Victoria looked at him.
“I rebuild.”
“Good.”
“Without you.”
Daniel's smile disappeared.
She continued.
“Because if I rebuild my life around you, then I haven't learned anything.”
Daniel nodded.
For the first time, he understood.
Love was not possession.
It was not rescue.
May you like
It was choosing to become better.
Even if the other person was not waiting.
