Chapter 5 - THE HIDDEN DOOR

The next morning, Evelyn and Daniel returned to the Ashford estate.
This time, Daniel wore no suit.
He wore jeans and a plain gray shirt.
Evelyn wore a dark coat.
They were stopped at the gate.
A security guard approached.
“Mr. Hart, your grandfather says you are not welcome on the property.”
Daniel stared at him.
“My grandfather?”
The guard hesitated.
“Mr. Ashford.”
Daniel smiled.
“Open the gate.”
“I have orders.”
Daniel took out his phone.
“Then call him.”
The guard did.
A minute later, the gate opened.
Evelyn looked at Daniel.
“Why did he let us in?”
“Because he thinks he can control what happens next.”
They walked through the garden.
The engagement party decorations were still there.
The white flowers had begun to wilt.
A crushed champagne glass lay near the lawn.
Evelyn stopped.
“This is where you stood.”
Daniel looked at the grass.
“I should have come out sooner.”
“You came out.”
“After she hurt you.”
Evelyn looked at him.
“Daniel, your entire life is about to change.”
“I know.”
“No.”
She touched his arm.
“You don't.”
Then they entered the mansion.
Thomas was waiting.
Arthur sat in the library.
Victoria stood beside the window.
She looked exhausted.
Daniel stopped.
“Why is she here?”
Victoria answered.
“Because this is my family's house.”
Daniel looked around.
“Is it?”
Arthur's expression hardened.
“Watch your tone.”
Daniel laughed.
“That is the first time anyone has ever told me that in this house.”
Evelyn stepped forward.
“Take us to the basement.”
Thomas stood.
“No.”
Evelyn looked at him.
“Then I will tell Daniel what happened the night his father died.”
Thomas froze.
Arthur's fingers tightened around his cane.
Daniel looked between them.
“What happened?”
Evelyn walked toward the hallway.
Thomas moved to block her.
Daniel stepped between them.
“Touch her and I call the police.”
Thomas stared at him.
“You have no idea what you are doing.”
“No.”
Daniel smiled.
“But I am learning.”
They descended into the basement.
At the far end was a brick wall.
Evelyn stopped.
“Here.”
Daniel looked at the wall.
“There is nothing here.”
Evelyn took out the black key.
She walked to a small metal plate hidden behind an old wine rack.
She inserted the key.
A click echoed through the basement.
The wall moved.
A hidden door opened.
Inside was a narrow stone passage.
Victoria whispered.
“What is this?”
Evelyn looked at her.
“Your grandfather's worst nightmare.”
They entered.
At the end of the passage was a steel door.
Evelyn placed her hand against it.
Daniel stood beside her.
“Are you ready?”
“No.”
“Good.”
She turned the key.
The door opened.
Inside were shelves.
Boxes.
Documents.
Hard drives.
Photographs.
And a large black safe.
Daniel walked forward.
On the wall was a single sentence written in his father's handwriting:
THE TRUTH DOES NOT DISAPPEAR. IT WAITS.
Daniel stood motionless.
Then he turned toward Thomas.
“Why did my father hide this?”
Thomas said nothing.
Arthur's voice came from behind them.
“Because he was a paranoid man.”
Evelyn turned.
“No.”
She looked at Arthur.
“He hid it because he knew you were going to kill him.”
The room went silent.
Daniel looked at his mother.
“What?”
Arthur raised his cane.
“Enough.”
Evelyn walked to the safe.
“Open it.”
Arthur stared.
“You don't have the combination.”
Evelyn smiled.
“I do.”
She entered six numbers.
The safe opened.
Inside was a red folder.
Daniel reached for it.
The first document was a contract.
The second was a bank transfer.
The third was a photograph.
Daniel's father stood beside a car.
The date was the night he died.
Behind him stood Thomas.
And behind Thomas—
Arthur Ashford.
Daniel's hands began to shake.
“What is this?”
Evelyn pointed to the photograph.
“Your father took that picture himself.”
Daniel looked at the date.
Then at the time.
“Two hours before the accident.”
Thomas stepped backward.
Daniel turned toward him.
“You were there.”
Thomas's face hardened.
“I was trying to help him.”
“Then why did he photograph you?”
Thomas said nothing.
Daniel looked at the documents.
Then he saw the final page.
A handwritten note.
If anything happens to me, Thomas Hart knows the truth.
Daniel lifted his head.
“Why did my father write your name?”
May you like
Thomas looked at him.
And for the first time, the man who had controlled the Hartwell empire for twenty-two years looked afraid.
