Chapter 9 - THE WOMAN WHO LOST EVERYTHING

Victoria lost everything.

Her apartment.

Her inheritance.

Her position in the company.

Her family.

The Ashford name became a symbol of greed.

She moved into a small apartment across town.

She found a job at a community center.

For the first time in her life, she worked for money.

At first, she hated it.

Then she discovered something unexpected.

People thanked her.

Not because she was an Ashford.

Because she helped them.

One evening, she returned home exhausted.

Daniel was waiting outside.

She stopped.

“What are you doing here?”

“I wanted to see you.”

“Why?”

“I don't know.”

She gave a sad smile.

“You don't have to forgive me.”

“I know.”

“Then why are you here?”

Daniel looked at her.

“Because I miss you.”

Victoria closed her eyes.

“Daniel…”

“I am not asking you to come back.”

“Good.”

“I am not ready for that either.”

She looked at him.

“Then what do you want?”

“To know who you are without your family.”

Victoria laughed softly.

“I don't know.”

“Neither do I.”

For a moment, they stood in silence.

Then Daniel said:

“My mother wants me to open a foundation.”

Victoria looked surprised.

“That's good.”

“She wants me to hire people who were harmed by my family.”

Victoria nodded.

“I would like to help.”

Daniel studied her.

“Why?”

“Because I helped destroy people.”

She looked down.

“Maybe I should spend the rest of my life helping rebuild something.”

Daniel said nothing.

Victoria looked up.

“Is that enough?”

“No.”

She nodded.

“I know.”

“But it is a beginning.”

For the first time, Victoria smiled.

Not the smile she had worn at the engagement party.

This one was smaller.

More honest.

And Evelyn, watching from across the street, saw it.

She did not approve.

Not yet.

But she understood something.

People could change.

Sometimes only after losing everything.
