Chapter 16 - THE WOMAN IN THE BLACK DRESS

Five years after the garden party, Evelyn received an invitation.
It was not a wedding invitation.
It was an award ceremony.
The Hartwell Foundation was honoring her for a lifetime of service.
Evelyn refused to attend.
Daniel ignored her refusal.
He arranged a car.
Lydia chose her dress.
Victoria brought flowers.
And Daniel personally walked her into the ceremony.
When Evelyn entered, the entire room stood.
She looked around.
Hundreds of people were applauding.
Some had lost their homes.
Some had received scholarships.
Some had escaped abusive families.
All of them had been helped by the foundation.
Daniel stepped onto the stage.
“My mother taught me that wealth is not what you keep.”
He looked at Evelyn.
“It is what you use to help someone else stand again.”
Evelyn shook her head.
Daniel continued.
“She also taught me that you should never judge a person by what they wear.”
The audience laughed softly.
Evelyn smiled.
Then Daniel revealed a large photograph.
It showed Evelyn standing on the lawn years earlier.
Soaked.
Drenched.
Holding her old handbag.
The room went silent.
Evelyn looked at the picture.
She had hated that photograph.
But now, beneath it, were the words:
THE DAY SHE WAS HUMILIATED WAS THE DAY SHE CHANGED AN EMPIRE.
Evelyn began to cry.
Daniel stepped down.
He hugged her.
This time, she hugged him first.
Victoria stood nearby.
Evelyn reached for her hand.
Victoria looked surprised.
“Come here.”
Victoria stepped forward.
Evelyn held her hand.
The audience applauded.

Not because the past was forgotten.
Because the future had been chosen.
