Chapter 5 - The Second PrisonerThe accountant’s name was Thomas Keene.

His uncle stopped.
“What’s wrong?”
“You tell me.”
Harrison glanced at Evelyn.
“She’s been through unimaginable trauma. We shouldn’t upset her.”
Evelyn’s breathing quickened.
“That’s him.”
Harrison frowned.
“I’m sorry?”
“The room. The night Miranda drugged me.”
Adrian watched every movement in his uncle’s face.
Nothing.
No panic.
No shock.
Only controlled disappointment.
“Harrison,” Adrian said, “were you inside the eastern wing three years ago?”
Silence.
Then Harrison sighed.
“I was afraid this would happen.”
Evelyn stared at him.
“You admit it?”
“I admit visiting Miranda.”
“In my prison.”
“I didn’t know you were there.”
Evelyn laughed once.
It was a broken sound.
“You stood outside my door.”
Harrison looked wounded.
“I have spent millions trying to find you.”
“Exactly.”
Adrian's eyes narrowed.
“You funded searches in the wrong places.”
Harrison turned toward him.
“Careful.”
“Why?”
“Because grief can make intelligent men believe irrational things.”
Adrian stepped closer.
“My wife says you participated in her kidnapping.”
“Your wife is traumatized.”
Evelyn flinched.
Adrian's voice dropped.
“Do not use what happened to her to discredit her.”
Harrison’s expression hardened.
There.
For a second, the beloved uncle disappeared.
Something colder looked back.
Then Daniel Ross entered with two state detectives.
“Harrison Blackwood?”
Harrison smiled.
“Yes?”
“We’d like to ask you some questions.”
“Of course.”
He adjusted his cuff.
“I have nothing to hide.”
As officers escorted him away, Harrison looked over Adrian’s shoulder toward Evelyn.
His lips moved.
No sound.
But she understood.
Her face went white.
Adrian turned.
“What did he say?”
Evelyn whispered, “He said, ‘You should have stayed quiet.’”
That was when Adrian stopped thinking like a grieving husband.
He began thinking like the CEO Harrison had helped train.
Coldly.
Strategically.
If Harrison and Miranda had built a conspiracy inside the Blackwood family, emotional reactions would help them.
Evidence would destroy them.
Adrian called an emergency meeting of his independent board counsel.
Then he froze every discretionary family trust account he legally controlled.
He ordered forensic teams to preserve every server.
Ross sent technicians to recover the hidden drive from the piano.
Two hours later, they found it.
Still there.
Encrypted.
Evelyn remembered the password.
OctoberRain17.
The screen filled with documents.
Transactions.
Property records.
Fake charitable grants.
Secret accounts.
But the worst file was labeled:
SUCCESSION.
Adrian opened it.
A chart appeared showing Blackwood Global voting control.
Harrison’s current influence: 18%.
Adrian’s: 44%.
Evelyn’s marital trust: 11%.
If Adrian died without children, certain shares moved temporarily into a family-controlled holding company.
Harrison would gain effective control.
Adrian stared at the screen.
“This wasn’t just about stealing money.”
Ross nodded.
“They were positioning for ownership.”
Evelyn pointed toward another document.
A life insurance policy.
Adrian Blackwood.
Two hundred fifty million dollars.
Beneficiary: Blackwood Legacy Holdings.
The holding company was controlled by Harrison.
Adrian leaned back.
“He planned to kill me.”
Evelyn’s voice trembled.
“That’s why Miranda said she’d do it if I escaped.”
Another folder contained copies of Adrian’s travel schedules.
Routes.
Hotels.
Private aircraft registrations.
Security weaknesses.
Ross’s face tightened.
“These aren’t financial records.”
“What are they?”
“Operational plans.”
One spreadsheet contained dates beside cryptic terms.
Singapore — aborted.
Geneva — visibility issue.
Aspen — weather conflict.
Bahamas — security too high.
Adrian remembered incidents.
A malfunctioning hotel elevator.
A brake problem discovered before a mountain drive.
A yacht engine fire.
He had called them bad luck.
They had been attempts.
Evelyn covered her mouth.
“They were trying to kill you.”
Adrian took her hand.
This time she didn't pull away.
“We’re ending it.”
But Harrison was released after questioning.
There was not yet enough evidence linking him directly to Evelyn’s captivity.
His lawyers arrived immediately.
By dawn, media vans surrounded the hospital.
The story had exploded worldwide.
MISSING BILLIONAIRE’S WIFE FOUND ALIVE IN FAMILY ESTATE.
BLACKWOOD FAMILY MEMBER ARRESTED.
FOUR-YEAR MYSTERY TAKES SHOCKING TURN.
Adrian refused every interview.
Evelyn refused even more strongly.
“I’m not going to become entertainment,” she said.
“You won’t.”
But someone else wanted the cameras.
At noon, Harrison Blackwood walked outside Blackwood Global headquarters and gave a press conference.
Adrian watched from Evelyn’s hospital room.
Harrison looked devastated.
“My family is experiencing a profound tragedy,” he told reporters. “Evelyn Blackwood has endured terrible suffering. At this time, we must also recognize that trauma can distort memory.”
Adrian’s jaw tightened.
Harrison continued.
“My niece-by-marriage deserves compassion, not exploitation by people attempting to turn confused recollections into accusations.”
Evelyn stared at the television.
“He’s calling me insane.”
Adrian turned it off.
“He’s scared.”
“How do you know?”
“Because powerful people only start explaining themselves when silence stops protecting them.”
That afternoon, doctors discharged Evelyn into a secure recovery residence owned by a close friend.
She refused to return to Blackwood Manor.
Adrian understood.
The first night, she slept with every light on.
Adrian slept in a chair outside her bedroom.
At 3:17 a.m., he heard her scream.
He opened the door but did not enter.
“Evelyn?”
She was sitting upright.
“I’m here.”
He remained in the doorway.
“You’re safe.”
She stared at him.
“Are you?”
The question chilled him.
Minutes later his phone rang.
Ross.
“We found something.”
Adrian stepped into the hallway.
“What?”
“The forensic accountant Evelyn hired four years ago.”
“He died.”
“That’s what everyone thought.”
Adrian went still.
“What are you saying?”
“The body identified after the highway crash was badly burned. Identification relied primarily on dental records supplied by his private dentist.”
“Okay.”
“That dentist received $400,000 six days later through a shell company connected to Harrison.”
Adrian gripped the phone.
“You think the accountant survived?”
“I think someone wanted the world to believe he died.”
“Can you find him?”
“We already did.”
Adrian’s pulse accelerated.
“Where?”
“Vermont.”
“And?”
Ross hesitated.
“He says he has evidence that can put Harrison away.”
“Then bring him in.”
“There’s a problem.”
“What?”
“He refuses to speak unless Evelyn comes personally.”
Adrian looked toward her bedroom.
“Why?”
May you like
Ross answered quietly.
“Because he says Evelyn wasn’t the only prisoner at Blackwood Manor.”
