Chapter 7 - Forty-Three MinutesRavenscroft employed 186 people on the night shift.

An internal investigation revealed that Miranda had never actually reached county jail.

The transport vehicle carrying her had been redirected after dispatch received a falsified emergency order.

Someone had used police credentials belonging to a retired deputy who had worked private security for Blackwood Global.

Harrison denied involvement.

Again.

Adrian stopped listening to denials.

He wanted names.

Every employee who had worked at Blackwood Manor during the previous four years was questioned.

Some knew nothing.

Some suspected something.

Three admitted they had seen Evelyn.

None had reported it.

That hurt almost as much as Harrison’s betrayal.

Adrian sat across from Martha Bell, a sixty-two-year-old housekeeper who had worked for his family for twenty-three years.

Martha cried before Adrian asked his first question.

“I’m sorry.”

“You saw her?”

Martha nodded.

“How many times?”

“Maybe six.”

“And you never called police?”

Miranda had told staff Evelyn was mentally unstable and legally confined under private psychiatric supervision.

Forged medical orders supported the lie.

Security personnel warned employees that interfering would violate court orders.

Later, when Martha realized something was wrong, Drake showed her photographs of her grandson leaving school.

“He said accidents happen to children when grandmothers become heroes.”

Adrian closed his eyes.

“You should have told me.”

“I know.”

Evelyn sat beside him.

“No.”

Adrian turned.

She looked at Martha.

“You were afraid.”

Martha sobbed.

“I brought you food.”

“You did.”

“I should have done more.”

Evelyn reached across the table.

“You were the only person who ever slipped me a pencil.”

Adrian looked at Martha.

The notebooks.

Without that pencil, Evelyn would have had no written record.

Martha had helped, however imperfectly.

Fear had not made her innocent.

But neither had it made her evil.

That distinction mattered to Evelyn.

It slowly began to matter to Adrian too.

By afternoon, authorities identified the remains beneath room sixteen as Michael Torres.

The murder investigation intensified.

Then Ross received a message.

Miranda wanted to negotiate.

She claimed Drake had kidnapped her after freeing her.

Nobody believed the first part.

But her message contained a location and demand.

She would turn over evidence against Harrison in exchange for immunity.

Prosecutors refused full immunity.

They offered consideration for cooperation.

A meeting was arranged at an abandoned marina.

Adrian was ordered to stay away.

He went anyway.

Evelyn did not.

“You need to stop believing you’re the only person who can fix everything,” she told him.

He looked at her.

“I’m trying to protect you.”

“I know.”

“That’s bad?”

“Not when you ask me what protection looks like.”

Adrian absorbed that.

She kissed his cheek.

The first physical affection she had initiated since being found.

It lasted one second.

It meant more than any embrace he had imagined during those four years.

At the marina, police surrounded the area.

Miranda appeared alone.

She looked exhausted.

The elegant socialite was gone.

Her hair was wet.

Her clothes were muddy.

“Where’s Drake?” Ross asked through a megaphone.

Miranda raised both hands.

“I don’t know.”

She walked forward.

Then she saw Adrian behind the tactical vehicles.

Her expression twisted.

“You ruined everything.”

Adrian almost laughed.

“Me?”

“If you had just sold the company like Harrison wanted, none of this would have happened.”

“You imprisoned my wife.”

“You weren’t supposed to keep looking!”

The words burst from her.

Silence followed.

Adrian stepped closer.

“You thought I’d give up.”

“Everyone gives up eventually.”

“Not on Evelyn.”

Miranda stared at him with something resembling hatred.

“You always chose her.”

Adrian frowned.

The bitterness was personal.

Miranda had grown up almost like a sister to him.

Their fathers were brothers.

After Adrian’s mother died, Miranda spent summers at Blackwood Manor.

“You did this because you were jealous?”

Miranda laughed bitterly.

“You still don’t understand.”

She reached inside her coat.

Police raised weapons.

“Hands!”

“It’s evidence!”

Slowly, she removed an envelope.

Inside was a DNA report.

Adrian looked at it.

“What is this?”

Miranda spoke quietly.

“Harrison isn’t my father’s brother.”

Adrian stared.

“He’s your father.”

The world seemed to tilt.

Miranda explained that Harrison had secretly fathered her during an affair with his brother’s wife.

Only a handful of people knew.

Her legal father discovered the truth shortly before his death.

Harrison spent decades trying to ensure Miranda received control and wealth equal to Adrian’s.

But Blackwood trusts were built around direct legal descendants.

Miranda could inherit money.

Not control.

Unless Adrian’s branch disappeared.

“So you helped your biological father destroy us?” Adrian asked.

“I was promised the company.”

“You traded Evelyn’s life for a corporation?”

Miranda’s face hardened.

“You were born with everything.”

“No.”

Adrian pointed toward her.

“I was born into a family. You helped turn it into a crime scene.”

Sirens wailed in the distance.

Miranda glanced around nervously.

“That’s not ours,” Ross said.

A boat engine roared.

Drake emerged from behind an old fuel building.

He fired.

Police returned fire.

Miranda screamed and dropped.

Adrian hit the ground.

Drake ran toward the dock.

Ross pursued him.

A bullet struck a piling beside Adrian’s head.

Then Drake’s boat exploded away from the marina.

Police boats moved to intercept.

He escaped into morning fog.

Miranda had been shot in the shoulder.

While paramedics treated her, she grabbed Adrian’s hand.

“Harrison has another plan.”

“What?”

“He knows the files are exposed.”

“What plan?”

She struggled to breathe.

“Destroy Blackwood Global.”

Adrian leaned closer.

“How?”

“Not financially.”

Her fingers tightened.

“Literally.”

Then her eyes rolled back.

Paramedics pushed Adrian away.

Hours later doctors stabilized her.

Investigators searched the envelope she had brought.

Inside was more than the DNA report.

There was a handwritten list of Blackwood facilities.

Factories.

Data centers.

Warehouses.

One location was circled.

Ravenscroft Research Facility.

Adrian felt cold.

The facility stored industrial chemicals used in experimental battery production.

A catastrophic fire there could kill hundreds.

Ross immediately called federal authorities.

Adrian’s phone rang simultaneously.

Blackwood Global emergency control.

He answered.

“Mr. Blackwood?”

A panicked voice spoke through alarms.

“We’ve lost control of the Ravenscroft system.”

“What do you mean?”

“Someone locked us out remotely.”

Adrian looked at Ross.

“How long until containment failure?”

May you like

The technician hesitated.

“Forty-three minutes.”
