Chapter 9 - The Daughter Harrison Could Never ControlMiranda had not been kidnapped.

Midnight.

No police.

No tracking devices.

The original encrypted drive in return for Martha.

Evelyn watched the hostage video twice.

Then she turned to Adrian.

“He wants us frightened enough to follow his rules.”

“We don’t have a choice.”

“Yes, we do.”

“Martha could die.”

“And if you walk into that house alone, Harrison gets exactly what he has wanted for years.”

Adrian paced.

“What are you suggesting?”

Evelyn looked toward Ross.

“We make him think he’s winning.”

A plan formed.

Not Adrian’s plan.

Evelyn’s.

That mattered.

For four years Harrison and Miranda had treated her as a helpless problem.

They still believed trauma had made her weak.

Evelyn intended to use that assumption.

At 11:58 p.m., Adrian drove through Blackwood Manor’s gates alone.

At least, that was what exterior cameras showed.

The drive sat on the passenger seat.

He entered through the main doors.

No lights.

“Harrison!”

A voice came through the manor’s old speaker system.

“Library.”

Adrian walked inside.

Harrison stood near the fireplace.

Samuel Drake guarded Martha.

Her hands were bound.

Her face was bruised.

But she was alive.

Adrian placed the drive on a table.

“Let her go.”

Harrison smiled.

“You’ve always been impatient.”

“You lost.”

“Did I?”

“You’re wanted for kidnapping, murder conspiracy, sabotage—”

“And you think corporations care?”

Harrison laughed.

“By morning, markets will panic. Board members will beg for stability. Investors will want a Blackwood who isn’t emotionally compromised.”

“You mean you.”

“I mean Miranda.”

Adrian stared.

“Miranda is cooperating with prosecutors.”

Harrison’s smile faded slightly.

“She’ll come home.”

“No.”

“She always does.”

Adrian suddenly understood that Harrison did not love Miranda.

He owned her.

The same way he believed he owned everyone.

“Release Martha.”

Harrison picked up the drive.

“Password?”

“OctoberRain17.”

Harrison inserted it into a laptop.

Files appeared.

He smiled.

“Finally.”

Then every file vanished.

His smile disappeared.

“What did you do?”

“Those files aren’t the originals.”

Drake raised his weapon.

Adrian held still.

“The moment you opened the drive, it transmitted your device location and unlocked a remote evidence package already sent to federal investigators, prosecutors, and six independent news organizations.”

Harrison's face twisted.

“You’re bluffing.”

A voice came from the doorway.

“No, he isn’t.”

Evelyn stepped into the library.

Harrison stared.

Adrian turned sharply.

She was not supposed to enter this early.

But Evelyn looked calm.

For the first time in years, she stood in the room where her nightmare had started.

“You,” Harrison whispered.

“Me.”

Drake pointed his gun toward her.

Adrian moved.

“Don’t!”

Evelyn did not flinch.

“You spent four years teaching me to be afraid of doors,” she told Harrison. “Tonight I walked through one because I chose to.”

Harrison’s jaw tightened.

“You should have appreciated that we kept you alive.”

Evelyn's expression changed.

“Say that again.”

He laughed.

“We kept you alive.”

Hidden microphones transmitted every word.

Police tactical teams listened from outside.

Harrison continued, intoxicated by his own anger.

“You had no idea what was at stake.”

“You kidnapped me.”

“You interfered.”

“You killed my baby.”

Adrian looked at Harrison.

Harrison’s silence was enough.

Evelyn stepped closer.

“You knew.”

“I knew pregnancy complicated matters.”

Adrian lunged.

Drake struck him with the weapon.

Adrian fell.

Evelyn screamed.

Harrison raised a hand.

“Enough!”

Martha suddenly kicked Drake behind the knee.

He stumbled.

Adrian tackled him.

The gun slid beneath a table.

Evelyn pulled Martha away.

Harrison ran.

He disappeared through the hidden panel beside the fireplace.

Adrian knew the passage.

It led toward the eastern wing.

He followed.

“Adrian!”

Evelyn ran after him.

The passage opened near room seventeen.

Harrison stood at the far end holding a pistol recovered from an old storage cabinet.

“Stop.”

Adrian froze.

Harrison looked at Evelyn.

“You ruined him.”

She stared back.

“No. I reminded him who he was.”

“You think this family survives because of love?”

Harrison laughed.

“It survives because men like me do what softer people cannot.”

Adrian looked at the locked rooms.

“You call this strength?”

“I call it necessity.”

Sirens approached.

Harrison heard them.

His expression changed.

He pointed the gun at Adrian.

“If I can’t have Blackwood Global—”

Evelyn moved.

The gun fired.

Adrian felt nothing.

Then he heard Evelyn gasp.

She fell.

“EVELYN!”

Adrian dropped beside her.

Blood appeared across her side.

Harrison ran.

Adrian started to rise.

Evelyn grabbed him.

“No.”

“He shot you!”

“Stay.”

It was the hardest command Adrian had ever obeyed.

He stayed.

Police flooded the corridor.

Ross pursued Harrison.

Drake was arrested in the library.

Paramedics reached Evelyn.

The bullet had entered near her ribs.

Adrian held her hand.

“You’re okay.”

“You don’t know that.”

“You’re okay.”

She managed a weak smile.

“You’re terrible at lying.”

They rushed her to surgery.

For three hours, Adrian sat beneath white hospital lights.

Four years earlier he had waited for news that never came.

This time people kept him informed.

The bullet had missed Evelyn’s heart.

Missed major arteries.

Damaged part of her lung.

She would likely survive.

When the surgeon finally said, “She’s stable,” Adrian cried without embarrassment.

But Harrison had escaped the manor through an underground tunnel.

Again.

Police searched the forest.

At 5:41 a.m., Ross called.

“We found his vehicle.”

“And Harrison?”

“Gone.”

“Where?”

Ross hesitated.

“There’s blood inside.”

“His?”

“We don’t know.”

Two days passed.

Then three.

No Harrison.

On the fourth morning, Evelyn woke stronger.

Adrian was beside her.

“You stayed.”

“Yes.”

She smiled.

“Good.”

A nurse brought breakfast.

Adrian inspected the tea automatically.

Evelyn noticed.

“So now you’re paranoid too?”

“Completely.”

She laughed softly.

It was the first laugh he had heard from her since before she disappeared.

He almost cried again.

Then Ross entered.

His expression erased the moment.

“We got DNA from the blood in Harrison’s car.”

Adrian stood.

“It’s his?”

Ross shook his head.

“Miranda’s.”

Evelyn stared.

“But Miranda is in protective custody.”

Ross looked at them.

“She was.”

Adrian felt dread spread through his chest.

May you like

“What happened?”

“She disappeared from the hospital last night.”
