Chapter 6 - Everyone Who Looked the Other WayBy sunrise, Samuel Drake and Miranda Vale were fugitives.

Before his supposed death, he had been meticulous, respected, and painfully cautious.
The man Adrian met in Vermont looked nothing like the photograph from four years earlier.
Long beard.
Deep scar along his neck.
One eye clouded from an old injury.
He lived in a cabin surrounded by security cameras and motion sensors.
Evelyn insisted on going.
Adrian argued once.
She looked at him.
“I spent four years having other people decide where I was allowed to go.”
He never argued about it again.
Ross accompanied them.
Thomas opened the door but did not invite anyone inside until Evelyn stepped forward.
He stared at her.
Then his eyes filled.
“You survived.”
Evelyn nodded.
“So did you.”
Thomas covered his face.
“I’m sorry.”
“For what?”
“I told Harrison.”
Adrian stiffened.
Thomas explained.
Four years earlier, Evelyn hired him to examine suspicious Blackwood transactions.
Thomas discovered forged approvals and shell corporations.
But before he went to authorities, he made a mistake.
He confronted Harrison privately.
Harrison acted shocked.
He promised to investigate.
That evening Thomas’s car was run off the highway.
He escaped before the vehicle caught fire.
A homeless man who had accepted a ride earlier died inside.
Harrison’s people manipulated the identification.
Thomas realized whoever had tried to kill him controlled police contacts, medical records, and financial institutions.
So he disappeared.
“Why didn’t you contact Evelyn?” Adrian asked.
“I tried.”
Thomas looked at her.
“The day after the crash, I called your office.”
Evelyn frowned.
“I never received a call.”
“Miranda answered.”
Silence.
“She told me you had already gone to police.”
Thomas realized too late that Miranda was involved.
Days later Evelyn vanished.
He went deeper into hiding.
“But you said there was another prisoner,” Ross reminded him.
Thomas opened a safe.
Inside were photographs.
He handed one to Adrian.
The image showed a young man entering Blackwood Manor through the rear entrance.
Adrian recognized him.
“Michael Torres.”
A journalist.
Michael had written several investigative pieces about the Blackwood family.
He disappeared two years after Evelyn.
Police assumed he had traveled to South America while investigating organized crime.
Thomas shook his head.
“He never left New York.”
“How do you know?”
“He contacted me.”
Adrian stared.
“When?”
“Three days before he disappeared.”
Michael had found Thomas through an encrypted channel.
He claimed to have evidence that Evelyn Blackwood might still be alive.
Adrian felt nauseated.
“Why didn’t he contact me?”
“He didn’t know who to trust.”
Michael believed someone inside Adrian’s security operation was leaking information to Harrison.
He planned to enter Blackwood Manor during a large charity event and search the eastern wing.
He did.
He never came out.
Evelyn stood suddenly.
Adrian looked at her.
“What?”
“There was someone.”
Her voice shook.
“In the room beside mine.”
Adrian felt the air leave his lungs.
“You never told me.”
“I never saw him. I only heard tapping through the pipes for a few weeks.”
She had used an old childhood code her mother taught her.
One tap for yes.
Two for no.
Eventually the stranger tapped his name.
M-I-C-H-A-E-L.
Then one night Evelyn heard shouting.
After that, nothing.
Thomas looked toward Ross.
“If Michael died there, Harrison has a murder charge waiting for him.”
They returned to Blackwood Manor with a warrant-supported forensic search team.
Evelyn remained outside.
Adrian entered the eastern wing with investigators.
Room sixteen had been painted recently.
Too recently.
Ultraviolet examination revealed old blood traces beneath the floor molding.
A cadaver dog alerted near the basement.
Workers removed a section of concrete installed approximately eighteen months earlier.
Beneath it, they found human remains.
Adrian stepped outside before the excavation was complete.
He found Evelyn sitting beneath an oak tree.
She looked at his face and knew.
“Michael?”
“We don’t have identification yet.”
“But you think so.”
Adrian sat beside her.
“I’m sorry.”
She looked at the manor.
“That house used to feel like magic.”
Adrian remembered.
They had married there.
Evelyn had danced barefoot in the ballroom after everyone left.
She had once told Adrian she wanted their future children to grow up climbing those trees.
Now the house felt poisoned.
“We can sell it,” he said.
Evelyn shook her head.
“Not yet.”
“Why?”
“Because I’m done letting them take things from me.”
Investigators worked for hours.
Near midnight, Ross emerged carrying an evidence bag.
Inside was a damaged camera.
“Found behind a wall in room sixteen.”
Michael’s camera.
The memory card was partially intact.
Technicians recovered five videos.
Four showed corridors and locked doors.
The fifth changed everything.
Michael had secretly recorded a conversation inside the lower basement.
Harrison stood beside Miranda.
A third person was with them.
The video angle showed only part of his body.
He wore a dark security uniform.
Michael whispered behind the camera.
Then Harrison spoke.
“We move Evelyn before Adrian comes home.”
Miranda replied, “Where?”
“The lake property.”
The third man shook his head.
“Too risky. Keep her here. Adrian trusts me. I’ll make sure he never reaches this wing.”
Adrian froze the video.
The security uniform.
The height.
The watch.
He recognized that watch.
A retirement gift Adrian himself had purchased.
Ross stared at him.
“You know him?”
Adrian could barely speak.
“My head of security.”
Samuel Drake.
The man who had traveled beside Adrian during three of the supposed accidents.
The man who had access to every route and hotel.
The man currently responsible for guarding Evelyn’s recovery residence.
Adrian pulled out his phone.
No signal.
Ross checked his.
Nothing.
A technician ran toward them.
“Cell jammer just activated near the west gate.”
Adrian looked toward Evelyn.
“Get in the car.”
She stood.
“What happened?”
“Drake.”
Her face changed.
Adrian tried the satellite emergency radio in Ross’s SUV.
Before he could connect, gunshots cracked through the darkness.
Investigators ducked.
A black vehicle smashed through the side gate.
Ross shouted, “Down!”
The SUV raced toward the tree line.
Adrian saw the driver.
Samuel Drake.
And in the passenger seat sat Miranda Vale.
Still wearing the clothes she had been arrested in.
Somehow, she had escaped custody.
As the vehicle disappeared into the forest, Evelyn stared after it.
Then she turned toward Adrian.
“If Drake was guarding the estate the night I disappeared…”
She stopped.
Adrian understood.
Drake had controlled surveillance.
Search access.
Evidence.
Every major decision made during the original investigation.
Which meant the most important question had changed.
May you like
Not how had Evelyn remained hidden?
But how many people had known?
