Chapter 11 - GRANT CHOOSES HIS MOTHER
No one moved.
Vivian held the gun steady.
Evelyn stood between her and the door.
Grant slowly raised his hands.
“Mom.”
“Don't.”
“Put it down.”
“You always were weak.”
Grant flinched.
Vivian looked at Evelyn.
“Give me the trust.”
Evelyn held the document.
“No.”
Vivian's eyes narrowed.
“You think a piece of paper will save you?”
“No.”
Evelyn took one step forward.
“You think the gun will?”
Vivian hesitated.
Marcus moved behind her.
Vivian turned.
The distraction gave Grant time.
He lunged.
The gun fell.
Marcus kicked it away.
Vivian screamed.
Within minutes, police entered the mansion.
Vivian was arrested.
But she smiled as officers handcuffed her.
Evelyn knew immediately.
There was something else.
The next morning, Vivian's attorney filed a motion claiming Evelyn was unfit to control the trust.
The argument was simple.
Evelyn had suffered a traumatic pregnancy.
She had been hospitalized.
She had been emotionally unstable.
And Grant had publicly admitted he was afraid of his mother.
The Whitmore board froze the trust.
Evelyn could not access the empire.
Vivian could not control it.
For the first time, the company had no leader.
Then Grant received a message.
His father had left a private confession.
The confession said Claire Hart had stolen company funds.
The document was signed.
The board believed it.
Evelyn was suddenly accused of being the daughter of a criminal.
The public turned again.
Grant looked at Evelyn.
“I don't believe it.”
“But the signature is real.”
Marcus examined it.
Then he noticed something.
“The date.”
“What about it?” Evelyn asked.
“Your mother was already dead.”
Marcus looked closer.
“This document was created after her death.”
Evelyn's eyes widened.
“Forgery.”
Marcus nodded.
But before they could prove it, the court scheduled a hearing.
Evelyn had seven days to prove she was mentally and legally fit to protect her daughter.
And Vivian had one final witness.
