Chapter 8 - THE FIRST LIE EXPOSED

Evelyn woke to her daughter sleeping beside her.
The baby was tiny.
Perfect.
She named her Lily.
Grant stood near the window.
He looked like a man waiting for judgment.
Evelyn did not look at him.
“Leave.”
“Evelyn—”
“Leave.”
He nodded.
Before he reached the door, Marcus entered.
“We have a problem.”
Evelyn looked up.
“Vivian?”
“Worse.”
Marcus showed her the news.
A headline had appeared everywhere.
PREGNANT WOMAN ATTACKS ELDERLY MOTHER IN-LAW IN FAMILY HOME.
Evelyn stared.
“They released the story.”
“They released edited security footage.”
The video showed Evelyn shouting.
It did not show Vivian striking her.
Marcus continued.
“They are calling you violent.”
Evelyn looked at her daughter.
“I won't let them take her.”
“They can't.”
“Can they?”
Marcus did not answer.
That night, they released the complete footage.
A journalist named Daniel Reed published it.
The video showed Vivian attacking Evelyn.
The internet exploded.
The Whitmore family issued a statement.
Vivian claimed the footage was fabricated.
Grant finally spoke publicly.
He appeared on camera.
“My mother attacked my wife.”
Evelyn watched the interview in silence.
Grant continued.
“I saw it happen. I did nothing. That was my failure.”
The statement spread across the country.
For the first time, Grant Whitmore stood against his mother.
Vivian responded within an hour.
She released a document claiming Grant had been emotionally unstable for years.
She called him unreliable.
She called Evelyn manipulative.
But the public had already seen the video.
The lie had cracked.
That night, Evelyn received an anonymous email.
Attached was a bank statement.
Millions of dollars had been transferred from Whitmore Global to offshore accounts.
The transfers were signed by Vivian.
