Chapter 4 - THE NAME ON THE TRUST

The next morning, Evelyn and Marcus traveled to a private law office in downtown Boston.
The attorney waiting for them was an elderly woman named Helen Price.
She had represented Nathaniel Whitmore.
For twenty-five years, she had kept silent.
Until now.
“You look like your mother,” Helen said.
Evelyn sat across from her.
“Everyone keeps saying that.”
“Your mother was brave.”
“Then why didn't she tell me the truth?”
Helen looked away.
“Because she believed the truth would put you in danger.”
Evelyn swallowed.
“Was she right?”
“Yes.”
Helen opened a safe.
Inside was a sealed envelope.
She placed it on the table.
“This was to be delivered to you when you became a mother.”
Evelyn stared at the envelope.
Her name was written across it.
The handwriting was Claire's.
Evelyn's fingers trembled as she opened it.
The letter was short.
My darling Evelyn,
If you are reading this, then the Whitmore family has finally come for you.
Evelyn stopped.
Her vision blurred.
She continued.
Trust no one who tells you that money is more important than truth. I made that mistake once.
Nathaniel Whitmore did not abandon me. I abandoned the empire because Vivian threatened you.
Evelyn covered her mouth.
Helen looked down.
The letter continued.
The Whitmore fortune was never built by one family. It was built by people whose names were erased. I created a legal structure to protect those people. You are not inheriting a fortune, Evelyn. You are inheriting responsibility.
At the bottom was one final sentence.
If Vivian ever tries to take your child, open the second door.
Evelyn looked up.
“What does that mean?”
Helen shook her head.
“I don't know.”
Marcus did.
He stood suddenly.
“Where is the original trust?”
Helen looked at him.
“Still inside the Whitmore mansion.”
Evelyn felt cold.
“What second door?”
Marcus stared at the letter.
“The nursery.”
That afternoon, Grant called.
Evelyn almost ignored him.
Then he said:
“Mom is planning something.”
Evelyn closed her eyes.
“What?”
“She knows about the trust.”
“Why are you telling me?”
“Because she’s going to make you look mentally unstable.”
Evelyn laughed bitterly.
“She already has.”
Grant lowered his voice.
“She has doctors. Lawyers. People who will say you were aggressive.”
Evelyn remembered the broom.
“You mean she is going to say I attacked her?”
“Yes.”
“Why warn me?”
Grant was silent.
Then he said:
“Because I don't want you to hate me.”
Evelyn closed her eyes.
“You should have thought about that before you watched me bleed.”
The call ended.
That night, a news story appeared online.
WHITMORE HEIRESS SUFFERS PSYCHOLOGICAL BREAKDOWN AFTER DOMESTIC INCIDENT.
Evelyn read the headline.
Then she saw the photograph.
It showed her smiling beside Grant.
The caption called her “emotionally unstable.”
Evelyn looked at Marcus.
“They're starting.”
May you like
Marcus nodded.
“Then we stop running.”
