Chapter 15 - THE TRIAL OF VIVIAN WHITMORE

Vivian arrived with lawyers.

She did not look afraid.

She looked relieved.

The trial began weeks later.

The prosecution presented financial crimes.

Fraud.

Embezzlement.

Witness intimidation.

Conspiracy.

The defense presented Vivian as a grieving mother.

A woman who had made mistakes.

A woman who had sacrificed everything for her family.

Then Evelyn took the stand.

Vivian watched her.

For the first time, Evelyn saw something like fear in her eyes.

The prosecutor asked:

“Mrs. Hart, did Vivian Whitmore attack you?”

“Yes.”

“Were you pregnant?”

“Yes.”

“Did your husband witness the attack?”

Evelyn looked at Grant.

“Yes.”

“Did he help you?”

“No.”

The courtroom went silent.

The prosecutor continued.

“Why did you stay?”

Evelyn looked down.

“Because I believed love meant surviving anything.”

Vivian's expression changed.

Evelyn continued.

“I thought if I was patient enough, kind enough, quiet enough, the people hurting me would eventually stop.”

She looked directly at Vivian.

“They did not stop because I was quiet.”

The courtroom held its breath.

“They stopped because I finally spoke.”

The recordings were played.

Vivian's voice filled the room.

Her threats.

Her plans.

Her confession.

The defense tried to suppress them.

But the audio had been legally obtained from a device placed by Nathaniel's attorney years earlier.

Everything was admissible.

Then Grant testified.

He told the truth.

All of it.

His mother had manipulated him.

His father had helped cover up Claire's death.

He had watched Evelyn being attacked.

He had done nothing.

The prosecutor asked:

“Why are you testifying against your mother?”

Grant looked toward Vivian.

“Because I spent my whole life confusing fear with loyalty.”

Vivian stared at him.

Her face collapsed.

The jury returned a verdict.

Guilty.

Vivian was taken away.

But before she left, she looked at Evelyn.

“You think this makes you powerful?”

Evelyn answered calmly.

“No.”

Vivian frowned.

May you like

Evelyn continued:

“It makes me free.”
