Chapter 11 - THE BETRAYAL THAT BUILT AN EMPIRE

Emily remembered the storage locker on the drive to the south side of Chicago.

She remembered everything.

The night she had run from Daniel.

The rain.

The blood on her sleeve.

The old blue box in her hands.

She had driven to her mother’s abandoned storage unit and hidden the file inside a box of Christmas decorations.

Then she had left.

She had never returned.

Until now.

Adrian sat beside her in the SUV.

Neither spoke.

Victor was being held at a secure location.

Daniel was under guard.

And yet Emily felt less safe than ever.

“Why did you build your empire?” she asked.

Adrian looked out the window.

“To find the truth.”

“About Michael?”

“Yes.”

“You already had money.”

“Money wasn’t enough.”

“What did you need?”

“Power.”

Emily looked at him.

Adrian continued.

“When Michael died, the police called it an accident.”

“But you didn’t believe them.”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because the brakes had been tampered with.”

Emily’s breath caught.

“The car accident wasn’t an accident.”

“No.”

“Then why did you say it was?”

Adrian looked at her.

“Because I had no proof.”

Emily understood.

The same problem she had faced.

Knowing the truth was not enough.

You needed evidence.

The storage unit was empty when they arrived.

Emily stared.

“No.”

Adrian stepped beside her.

“What?”

“The box was here.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yes.”

She walked inside.

The unit was dusty.

Old furniture.

Broken lamps.

Boxes.

She searched desperately.

Nothing.

Then she noticed a small scratch on the concrete floor.

She knelt.

Adrian crouched beside her.

“What?”

Emily pointed.

“There.”

They moved the old cabinet.

Beneath it was a metal trapdoor.

Adrian looked at her.

“You hid a file under the floor?”

“I was twenty-four.”

“Fair.”

He opened it.

Inside was the blue box.

Emily touched it.

Her hands shook.

Adrian watched her.

“You don’t have to open it.”

“Yes, I do.”

She lifted the lid.

Inside were photographs.

Documents.

A flash drive.

And one handwritten note.

Emily picked it up.

Her face went pale.

“What?”

She handed it to Adrian.

He read it.

The handwriting belonged to Michael.

If anything happens to me, do not trust the person closest to Adrian.

Adrian stared at the words.

Emily looked at him.

“Who was closest to you?”

Adrian said nothing.

Then he whispered:

“Marcus.”

Emily's heart sank.

The man who had been with Adrian for fifteen years.

The man who had seemed loyal.

The man who had disappeared during the attack.

Adrian suddenly understood.

Marcus had not been framed.

Thomas had been the distraction.

Victor had been the ghost.

Daniel had been the weapon.

But Marcus had been the architect.

The phone rang.

Adrian answered.

A voice spoke.

“Did you find the box?”

Adrian’s eyes became cold.

“Marcus.”

A laugh came through the phone.

“You finally figured it out.”

Emily froze.

Adrian tightened his grip on the phone.

“You killed Michael.”

“No.”

“Then who did?”

Marcus was silent.

Then said:

“Your father.”

Adrian went still.

Emily looked at him.

“What?”

Marcus continued.

“Your father ordered Michael killed.”

Adrian’s face became empty.

“Why?”

“Because Michael found out the truth.”

“What truth?”

Marcus laughed.

“Your family built the empire on the same operation you spent years trying to destroy.”

Emily stared at Adrian.

The truth was devastating.

Adrian had spent his entire life hunting a monster.

And the monster had been his own father.

Marcus continued:

“Michael wanted to expose everything.”

“And you stopped him.”

“No.”

Marcus’s voice became colder.

“I tried to save him.”

“Where is my father?”

Silence.

Then:

“Dead.”

Adrian closed his eyes.

Marcus continued.

“But before he died, he left something for you.”

“What?”

“A message.”

The call ended.

Emily looked at Adrian.

“What message?”

Adrian stared at the phone.

Then said:

“I don’t know.”

A second later, the flash drive inside the blue box began to blink.

Someone had just activated it remotely.
