Chapter 14 - THE LAST BETRAYAL
The bar was empty.
The same bar where Emily had worked the night Daniel found her.
The same place where Adrian had first heard her whisper the sentence that changed everything.
Emily entered through the back door.
Adrian followed from a distance.
He had agreed to let her walk inside alone.
He had not agreed to stay away.
The lights were off.
Emily moved carefully.
A voice came from the darkness.
“You came.”
Emily froze.
A woman stepped into view.
Emily recognized her.
Adrian’s financial director.
Thomas Vale.
The man everyone had suspected.
The man who had been framed.
But he was not alone.
Marcus stood beside him.
Emily's heart stopped.
“Marcus escaped?”
Thomas smiled.
“He was never in custody.”
Emily stared.
“What?”
Marcus laughed.
“The man arrested in Milwaukee was a decoy.”
Emily felt cold.
Thomas stepped closer.
“You’re very observant.”
“Why?”
“Because your evidence is incomplete.”
“What do you want?”
“The original file.”
“I don’t have it.”
Marcus smiled.
“You do.”
Emily understood.
They had not wanted the flash drive.
They wanted the paper documents.
The original evidence.
The names.
The signatures.
The proof.
Thomas pointed a weapon at her.
“Where is it?”
Emily said nothing.
Marcus stepped closer.
“You know, Daniel was never supposed to hurt you.”
Emily stared at him.
“What?”
“He was supposed to scare you.”
“Daniel attacked me.”
“Yes.”
“And you call that scaring me?”
Marcus shrugged.
“Daniel always went too far.”
Emily felt sick.
“Who ordered it?”
Thomas smiled.
“Your father’s old partners.”
She stared.
“My father?”
“Your father worked for them.”
Emily shook her head.
“No.”
Marcus laughed.
“Everyone has a secret.”
Suddenly, the lights came on.
Adrian stood at the entrance.
Thomas turned.
Marcus froze.
Adrian's voice was calm.
“You should have checked the cameras.”
Marcus's face went pale.
Emily understood.
Adrian had known.
He had allowed her to enter because he had already surrounded the building.
Security flooded the bar.
Thomas raised his weapon.
Adrian moved.
The shot went wide.
Emily dropped to the floor.
Adrian tackled Thomas.
Marcus ran.
Emily saw him disappear through the kitchen.
She followed.
“Emily!”
Adrian shouted.
But she kept moving.
Marcus ran toward the back exit.
Emily saw the old storage room.
The original file was hidden there.
She realized it.
He was going for it.
She reached the room first.
The blue box was inside a cabinet.
Marcus entered.
Emily held the box.
He stopped.
“Give it to me.”
“No.”
“Emily.”
She stepped backward.
“You have spent three years destroying lives.”
“You don’t understand.”
“I understand enough.”
Marcus moved toward her.
“You think Adrian is different?”
Emily's eyes hardened.
“Yes.”
Marcus laughed.
“He is exactly like his father.”
“No.”
“You don’t know what he has done.”
“I know what he chose not to do.”
Marcus stopped.
Emily continued:
“He could have killed Daniel.”
“He should have.”
“But he didn’t.”
Marcus stared.
“He could have killed you.”
“But he didn’t.”
“You think mercy makes him good?”
“No.”
Emily held the box tighter.
“I think choice matters.”
Marcus lunged.
Emily threw the box.
It struck him in the face.
He stumbled.
Adrian appeared in the doorway.
Marcus turned.
Adrian pointed his weapon.
For a moment, everyone froze.
Marcus smiled.
“Go ahead.”
Adrian's finger tightened.
Emily stepped between them.
“No.”
Adrian looked at her.
Marcus laughed.
“You see? She controls you now.”
Adrian lowered the weapon.
“No.”
He looked at Marcus.
“She reminds me who I choose to be.”
Security rushed in.
Marcus was arrested.
This time, there was no decoy.
The final betrayal was over.
But Emily knew one thing.
The truth was not finished.
Because inside the blue box was one final document.
