Chapter 15 - THE NIGHT CHICAGO WENT SILENT

Adrian read the letter alone.
Emily waited outside his study.
She knew something was wrong.
He had been inside for over an hour.
Finally, the door opened.
Adrian stepped out.
His face looked different.
“What did it say?”
He handed her the letter.
Emily read.
The confession was simple.
Adrian’s father had built the original criminal network.
He had ordered the operation.
He had used politicians, judges, businessmen, and criminals.
Michael had discovered the truth.
And Adrian had unknowingly inherited the empire.
The letter ended with one sentence:
My son will either become me or destroy everything I built.
Emily looked at Adrian.
“What are you going to do?”
He looked toward the city.
“Destroy it.”
“Your company?”
“My empire.”
“Everything?”
“Everything built on corruption.”
“That could ruin you.”
“Yes.”
Emily stepped closer.
“Are you sure?”
Adrian looked at her.
“For the first time in my life.”
The next morning, Adrian held a press conference.
Every major news channel in Chicago covered it.
He revealed the truth.
His father.
The money.
The corruption.
The criminal network.
The names.
The evidence.
He did not protect himself.
He did not protect his family.
He did not protect the empire.
He told the truth.
The city went silent.
By evening, the Blackwell organization had collapsed.
Banks froze accounts.
Politicians resigned.
Businesses were raided.
The powerful men who had believed themselves untouchable suddenly discovered that the law could reach them.
Adrian lost billions.
His company lost everything.
But Emily watched him stand outside the courthouse.
He looked lighter.
Almost peaceful.
“You’re not upset,” she said.
“I am.”
“You lost everything.”
“No.”
She looked at him.
Adrian took her hand.
“I lost what was never really mine.”
Emily smiled.
“What happens now?”
“I don’t know.”
The answer made her happy.
For the first time, Adrian Blackwell did not have a plan.
He did not control the future.
Neither did she.
They stood together in the cold Chicago wind.
Then Adrian’s phone rang.
He answered.
His expression changed.
Emily knew immediately.
“What?”
Adrian listened.
Then said:
“Where?”
He ended the call.
Emily looked at him.
“What happened?”
“Daniel is being transferred.”
“Why?”
“He escaped.”
Emily's stomach dropped.
Adrian continued:
“But he left something behind.”
“What?”
“A letter.”
They found it in Daniel’s old apartment.
Emily read it.
The handwriting was shaky.
Emily,
I know you will never forgive me. You shouldn’t.
But there is one thing you need to know.
I never ordered the attack on Adrian.
I only helped cover it up.
The person who ordered it was someone Adrian never suspected.
Emily looked at Adrian.
He stared at the letter.
Then read the final line.
Michael was killed by the one person who loved him most.
Adrian's face went pale.
Emily whispered:
“Who?”
The answer came from a photograph attached to the letter.
A woman.
May you like
Adrian stared.
His mother.
