Chapter 12 - WHEN THE MONSTER CHOSE MERCY

The flash drive contained one video.
Michael appeared on the screen.
He looked younger.
Alive.
Emily watched silently.
Adrian stood behind her.
Michael looked directly into the camera.
“If you’re watching this, I’m probably dead.”
Adrian’s face tightened.
Michael continued.
“Adrian, I know you’re going to blame yourself.”
Adrian looked away.
“But this was never your fault.”
The video showed documents.
Names.
Bank accounts.
Photographs.
Emily recognized several powerful Chicago businessmen.
One was a judge.
One was a police commissioner.
One was a senator.
And one was Daniel’s father.
Emily felt sick.
Michael continued:
“Our father built the foundation. The people who came after him expanded it.”
Adrian closed his eyes.
“The operation was never just about money.”
Michael looked directly at the camera.
“They use vulnerable people. They control families. They destroy anyone who tries to leave.”
Emily understood.
Daniel had not simply been an abusive man.
He had been raised in a world where control was normal.
That did not excuse him.
But it explained the darkness.
Michael continued.
“The person closest to Adrian knows everything.”
The video stopped.
Emily stared at the black screen.
“Marcus.”
Adrian nodded.
Then the door opened.
Daniel was brought inside.
He looked at Adrian.
“I know where Marcus is.”
Adrian turned.
“Where?”
Daniel smiled.
“Why should I tell you?”
Adrian walked toward him.
Emily grabbed his arm.
“Don’t.”
Adrian stopped.
Daniel looked at her.
“You still protect him?”
Emily stepped closer.
“No.”
“Then why stop him?”
“Because I don’t want to become you.”
Daniel's smile faded.
Adrian looked at Emily.
Something in his expression changed.
He understood.
The revenge he had wanted for three years had nearly turned him into the same kind of man he hated.
Adrian turned back to Daniel.
“You’re going to tell us where Marcus is.”
Daniel laughed.
“And if I don’t?”
Adrian reached for his phone.
“Then the evidence we have against you goes to every prosecutor in the city.”
Daniel’s face changed.
Adrian continued.
“Your bank accounts. Your recordings. Your involvement in the operation.”
Daniel stared.
“You can’t prove anything.”
“Perhaps.”
Adrian smiled.
“But you can explain it to a jury.”
Daniel went silent.
Emily watched Adrian.
He had not threatened to hurt Daniel.
He had not touched him.
He had simply taken away the power Daniel believed he possessed.
Finally, Daniel gave them an address.
An abandoned warehouse near the river.
Adrian turned to leave.
Daniel called after him.
“Blackwell.”
Adrian stopped.
Daniel looked at Emily.
“She will never love you.”
Adrian did not turn.
Daniel smiled.
“Because she knows what you are.”
Emily stepped forward.
“Daniel.”
He looked at her.
“I know exactly what he is.”
Daniel's smile grew.
“And?”
Emily looked toward Adrian.
“Unlike you, he gives me a choice.”
Daniel's expression collapsed.
Adrian looked at her.
For a moment, neither spoke.
Then they left.
The warehouse was empty.
Except for one chair.
And a television.
The screen came on.
Marcus appeared.
“Adrian.”
Adrian stood still.
Marcus smiled.
“You’ve always been predictable.”
“Where are you?”
“Closer than you think.”
Emily looked around.
Then she saw the security cameras.
The video was live.
Marcus was watching them.
“You killed Michael.”
“No.”
“You betrayed me.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Marcus’s expression changed.
“Because I believed your father was right.”
Adrian’s jaw tightened.
“He destroyed lives.”
“He built an empire.”
“He murdered my brother.”
Marcus shook his head.
“Michael was going to destroy everything.”
“And you let him die.”
“I chose survival.”
Adrian stared at him.
Marcus smiled.
“Now choose.”
The television screen changed.
A photograph appeared.
Emily.
Taken that morning.
Walking beside Adrian.
Then another.
Emily entering the storage unit.
Then another.
Emily sleeping in the Blackwell residence.
Her blood ran cold.
Marcus had been watching her.
The entire time.
His voice came through the speakers.
“Give me the files, and I disappear.”
Adrian looked at Emily.
She understood immediately.
Marcus had made a mistake.
He had shown them the photographs.
And one photograph contained something important.
A reflection.
Emily stepped closer to the screen.
“Wait.”
Adrian looked at her.
She pointed.
“In the window.”
The photograph showed Marcus's reflection.
Behind him was a sign.
Emily recognized it.
A private medical clinic.
Marcus was not in Chicago.
He was in Milwaukee.
Adrian looked at her.
Then smiled.
For the first time in days.
“Good.”
Emily stared.
May you like
“What?”
“You just found him.”
