Chapter 2 - The Woman Who Cried FirstAlexander Holloway had built a billion-dollar technology empire by refusing to panic.

The second was her own scream.
Seven months pregnant, barefoot, and still wearing the midnight-blue gown from the charity gala downstairs, Claire stumbled backward across the private hospital suite.
Her hand flew to her stomach.
“Vanessa—”
She never finished.
Vanessa Marlowe stood three feet away in a blood-red evening dress, breathing hard.
One moment earlier, she had driven the pointed heel of her shoe into Claire’s lower side.
Hard.
Deliberately.
Claire’s back struck the corner of a marble console.
Pain exploded through her abdomen.
She fell.
Vanessa watched her collapse.
No apology.
No panic.
Only satisfaction.
“You should have listened to me,” Vanessa whispered.
Claire curled one arm around her belly.
Their baby moved sharply beneath her hand.
“Why are you doing this?”
Vanessa laughed.
“Because you’re still here.”
Seventeen floors below them, nearly six hundred guests were attending the Holloway Children’s Foundation winter gala.
Politicians.
Actors.
Surgeons.
Executives.
And Claire’s husband, billionaire technology investor Alexander Holloway, who was supposed to be giving a speech at that exact moment.
Claire had come upstairs because her obstetrician wanted her resting after several painful contractions.
Vanessa had followed her.
Claire had assumed she wanted to apologize.
For months, Vanessa had been orbiting Alexander with the confidence of a woman who believed history gave her ownership.
She had dated him briefly ten years earlier.
She never mentioned that their relationship had lasted only four months.
Or that Alexander had ended it.
Instead, Vanessa told anyone willing to listen that Claire had stolen the life meant for her.
Claire pushed herself upright.
“Get out.”
Vanessa’s expression changed.
“Do you really think he loves you?”
Claire stared at her.
“You’re insane.”
“No.”
Vanessa stepped closer.
“I’m patient.”
She lowered her voice.
“When that baby comes, Alexander won’t need you anymore.”
Claire’s blood went cold.
Vanessa reached toward her.
Claire slapped her hand away.
“Don’t touch me.”
Then everything happened at once.
Claire tried to stand.
Vanessa shoved her.
Claire caught Vanessa’s wrist.
Vanessa screamed.
Not in fear.
For attention.
The suite door burst open.
Security guards rushed inside.
Behind them came hospital staff, two gala guests—
and Alexander.
He froze.
Claire was on the floor.
Vanessa stood against the wall holding her wrist.
Her eyes filled instantly with tears.
“Alexander!”
She ran toward him.
“She attacked me!”
Claire stared at her.
“What?”
Vanessa began shaking.
“I came here to check on her. She started screaming that I wanted you, and then she grabbed me.”
“That is a lie,” Claire said.
Alexander looked from one woman to the other.
A nurse rushed to Claire.
“Mrs. Holloway, are you hurt?”
“My stomach.”
Alexander’s face drained of color.
He dropped beside his wife.
“What happened?”
Claire looked into his eyes.
“She kicked me.”
Vanessa gasped.
“Oh my God.”
Claire pointed at her.
“She kicked me and pushed me into the table.”
Vanessa began sobbing harder.
“She attacked herself!”
Everyone went silent.
Claire stared at her.
Vanessa covered her mouth as though horrified by what she was about to reveal.
“She said if she got hurt, Alexander would finally stop speaking to me.”
Claire couldn’t believe it.
“She’s lying.”
Vanessa raised her bruised wrist.
“Then explain this.”
A security guard looked uncomfortable.
Alexander’s jaw tightened.
Claire recognized the danger immediately.
Vanessa had planned this.
Not just the confrontation.
The evidence.
The tears.
The witnesses arriving at exactly the right second.
Claire gripped Alexander’s hand.
“Please believe me.”
His eyes met hers.
“I do.”
Vanessa stopped crying.
Just for half a second.
It was enough for Claire to see the hatred underneath.
Then another contraction ripped through her stomach.
Claire screamed.
Monitors began beeping.
The nurse shouted for a stretcher.
Alexander lifted Claire into his arms.
“Get Dr. Bennett. Now.”
As the room exploded into motion, Vanessa remained beside the door.
Watching.
Waiting.
Then she whispered something Claire barely heard.
“No one saw me.”
Claire was carried into the hallway.
But Vanessa was wrong.
Above the door to Suite 1708, hidden inside a smoke detector installed after a string of hospital thefts, a tiny camera light blinked once.
Red.
Recording.

And somewhere in the hospital security system, fifteen minutes of footage had just captured everything.
Including what Vanessa had done before Claire ever entered the room.
