Chapter 3 - Fifteen Missing MinutesVanessa called Dr. Evan Pike at 12:43 a.m.

Markets collapsed.

Companies sued.

Partners betrayed him.

Competitors tried to destroy him.

Alexander calculated.

He planned.

He acted.

But when Claire screamed inside the maternity examination room, every discipline he had spent thirty-nine years developing disappeared.

He stood outside the curtain while Dr. Rebecca Bennett examined his wife.

“Claire?”

“I’m here.”

Her voice sounded weak.

Alexander pressed both hands against the edge of the hospital bed.

“I’m not leaving.”

Another monitor beeped.

He hated that sound.

“Is the baby okay?”

Dr. Bennett didn’t answer immediately.

That frightened him more than anything.

She studied the fetal monitor.

“The heartbeat is stable.”

Alexander released a breath.

“But?”

“Claire experienced trauma to the abdomen followed by contractions. We need to watch her closely.”

“Is she going into labor?”

“Not yet.”

Not yet.

The phrase felt like a knife.

Claire was only thirty-one weeks pregnant.

Their daughter still had weeks of development ahead.

Alexander touched Claire’s hair.

“You’re safe.”

Claire looked at him.

“Vanessa planned it.”

“I know.”

“No. You don’t understand. She knew when security would come.”

Alexander frowned.

Claire explained the confrontation as best she could.

Vanessa’s accusations.

The kick.

The shove.

Then the sudden scream that had brought witnesses.

“She wanted people to find us with her looking injured.”

Alexander’s expression hardened.

He believed Claire.

He had known Vanessa long enough to recognize manipulation.

But belief wasn’t evidence.

And downstairs, Vanessa was already building a different story.

By midnight, photographs from the gala were circulating online.

Claire leaving the ballroom.

Vanessa following later.

Alexander rushing through a hospital hallway.

Then came the first headline.

BILLIONAIRE’S PREGNANT WIFE INVOLVED IN PRIVATE HOSPITAL ALTERCATION

No names were officially confirmed.

They didn’t need to be.

Everyone knew.

Alexander’s assistant, Marcus Reed, entered the hospital room holding his phone.

“You need to see this.”

Alexander stepped into the hallway.

Vanessa had posted a statement.

Not directly accusing Claire.

That would have been too obvious.

Instead, she wrote:

Tonight I experienced something frightening at an event supporting children and families. I won’t discuss private medical matters involving another woman, especially someone expecting a child. I only ask everyone to choose kindness instead of violence.

Alexander stared at the screen.

“She’s good,” Marcus said.

Alexander looked at him.

“That wasn’t admiration.”

“No. It’s a warning.”

Within twenty minutes, the post had been shared thousands of times.

People filled in the blanks themselves.

Old photographs surfaced showing Vanessa with Alexander years earlier.

Commentators began constructing a triangle.

One entertainment account claimed Claire had always been jealous of Vanessa.

Another anonymous source said Claire had confronted Vanessa three times that month.

Every lie was carefully close enough to something real to sound believable.

Then came the photograph.

Vanessa leaving the hospital.

Her wrist wrapped in a medical brace.

Alexander almost laughed.

“She wasn’t injured.”

Marcus zoomed in.

“There’s more.”

A bruise had appeared along Vanessa’s cheek.

Claire had never touched her face.

“She did that herself.”

Marcus nodded.

“Probably.”

Alexander turned toward the security office.

“I want every camera recording from the seventeenth floor.”

Marcus hesitated.

“What?”

“The hospital says the cameras in that VIP corridor were offline for maintenance.”

Alexander stopped walking.

“All of them?”

“That’s what administration says.”

“That’s impossible.”

“I thought you’d say that.”

The hospital used a surveillance platform developed by one of Alexander’s former companies.

He knew the redundancy system.

If multiple cameras went offline simultaneously, alerts would trigger.

Unless somebody disabled them intentionally.

Alexander’s phone rang.

His mother.

He ignored it.

It rang again.

He answered.

“Mom.”

“Tell me the stories aren’t true.”

“They’re not.”

“Vanessa called me.”

Alexander closed his eyes.

Of course she had.

“She said Claire attacked her.”

“Claire is in a hospital bed because Vanessa kicked her.”

Silence.

Then his mother said something Alexander hadn’t expected.

“Are you sure?”

His eyes opened.

“Excuse me?”

“Alexander, I love Claire. You know that. But pregnancy can create stress, hormones—”

“Stop.”

“I’m simply saying Vanessa sounded terrified.”

“Claire has bruising on her abdomen.”

Another silence.

His mother lowered her voice.

“Then you need proof.”

“I’ll get it.”

Alexander ended the call.

He looked through the window at Claire.

She was sleeping now.

One hand rested over their daughter.

Alexander felt rage settle into something colder.

Vanessa hadn’t merely attacked his wife.

She had built a trap around her.

And somebody inside the hospital had helped.

Marcus returned from the security office forty minutes later.

His face told Alexander everything.

“The seventeenth-floor recordings were erased.”

Alexander’s voice dropped.

“When?”

“Eleven minutes after the incident.”

“By whom?”

“Administrator login.”

“Whose?”

“We don’t know yet.”

Alexander looked back through the glass.

Claire shifted in her sleep.

A nurse adjusted the monitor.

Marcus lowered his voice.

“There’s something else.”

“What?”

“One camera didn’t appear on the administrator’s deletion list.”

Alexander turned.

Marcus showed him a hospital maintenance diagram.

A small device was marked inside Suite 1708.

“After medication disappeared from VIP rooms six months ago, hospital security installed temporary covert cameras.”

Alexander stared at the diagram.

“Inside the suite?”

Marcus nodded.

“Apparently Vanessa didn’t know.”

“Does the recording still exist?”

“We don’t know.”

“Find out.”

Across town, Vanessa Marlowe sat before a mirror in her penthouse.

Her assistant held an ice pack against the bruise Vanessa had created with the edge of a silver compact.

Vanessa smiled at her reflection.

“People believe me?”

Her assistant swallowed.

“Most of them.”

“Good.”

Vanessa picked up her phone.

A message appeared from an unknown number.

You said every camera was erased.

Vanessa typed back.

They were.

The reply came instantly.

Then why is Holloway asking about Suite 1708?

Vanessa’s smile disappeared.
