Chapter 10 - Claire Calls VanessaAlexander thought Claire’s plan was insane.

Vanessa was gone again.
But this time she left in a hurry.
Inside the rented apartment, investigators found binoculars trained on Claire’s hospital room.
Photographs covered the walls.
Claire walking.
Claire eating.
Claire sleeping.
Alexander arriving.
Doctors entering.
Nurses leaving.
Schedules marked in red ink.
Vanessa knew every movement.
Then investigators found the final plan.
A handwritten timeline.
DELIVERY.
TRANSFER.
BLACKOUT.
EXIT.
Ortiz stared at it.
“She’s planning something during the birth.”
Alexander immediately demanded Claire be transferred to another hospital.
Dr. Bennett disagreed.
“Moving her at thirty-two weeks is risky.”
Alexander didn’t care.
Claire did.
“I’m staying.”
He turned.
“No.”
“Stop saying no to everything.”
“Stop suggesting dangerous things.”
Claire lowered her voice.
“If Vanessa knows this hospital, moving me somewhere unfamiliar won’t automatically make us safer.”
Ortiz agreed.
“We can lock St. Augustine down.”
Alexander hated being outvoted.
He lost anyway.
Vanessa’s apartment provided another clue.
A list of electrical subcontractors.
One was a man named Sean Kessler.
Kessler had recently worked on St. Augustine’s emergency power system.
Police found twenty thousand dollars deposited into his account.
He admitted Vanessa hired him.
She claimed she was conducting a “security audit.”
Kessler had provided building diagrams.
Backup generator schedules.
Access routes.
He denied knowing why.
Vanessa now knew how to create a blackout.
Hospital engineers immediately changed protocols.
Every generator room received armed security.
Elevators were locked.
Badges were replaced.
Claire remained on bed rest.
Days passed.
Thirty-three weeks.
Then thirty-four.
Every extra day gave their daughter a better chance.
Alexander read baby books beside her bed.
Claire mocked him.
“You highlighted it?”
“This is important.”
“You highlighted the chapter about diapers.”
“I approach new industries systematically.”
“Our daughter isn’t an industry.”
“She will have measurable performance indicators.”
Claire threw a pillow at him.
He caught it.
For thirty seconds, they were normal.
That mattered.
Outside, Vanessa’s world collapsed.
Dr. Pike formally testified before a grand jury.
Madison accepted a plea agreement.
Caroline West gave prosecutors her old medical records.
Aaron Vale turned over surveillance logs.
The recovered hospital video improved.
Forensic specialists rebuilt frames one by one.
They now had Vanessa entering the suite.
Placing the jammer.
Arguing.
Moving toward Claire.
Still no kick.
Four corrupted seconds stood between accusation and proof.
Ortiz’s team worked constantly.
Then, at thirty-five weeks, Claire woke to water soaking the sheets.
She stared down.
“Alexander.”
He sat upright.
“What?”
“My water broke.”
Chaos.
Nurses rushed in.
Dr. Bennett arrived.
The baby was coming.
Too early, but far safer than before.
Alexander held Claire’s hand while they moved her to labor and delivery.
Security locked the entire floor.
Every entrance guarded.
Every staff member verified.
Ortiz arrived personally.
Nobody was taking chances.
Labor lasted six hours.
Claire cursed Alexander twice.
Once apologized.
Then cursed him again.
He accepted all of it.
At 4:17 p.m., alarms suddenly sounded.
Not medical alarms.
Fire alarms.
Red lights flashed.
The lights flickered.
Alexander looked at Ortiz.
“Vanessa.”
Then darkness swallowed the corridor.
Emergency generators activated three seconds later.
But three seconds were enough.
A woman in surgical clothing stepped from a supply closet.
She moved toward Claire’s delivery room.
Security stopped her.
Not Vanessa.
Another accomplice.
Police arrested her.
Then everyone heard screaming from the neonatal floor.
Vanessa’s real target had never been Claire’s room.
It was the nursery.
She had used the first woman as a distraction.
Ortiz ran.
Alexander stayed with Claire.
He wanted to chase Vanessa.
But Claire’s contraction hit.
She screamed his name.
He chose his wife.
Exactly as Vanessa should have known he would.
At 4:29 p.m., Claire delivered a tiny baby girl.
Five pounds, three ounces.
Crying.
Alive.
Beautiful.
Alexander broke.
He cried openly as the doctor placed the baby briefly against Claire’s chest.
“Hello,” Claire whispered.
The little girl opened her eyes.
Alexander kissed Claire.
“We did it.”
Then the neonatal doors burst open.
Ortiz entered.
Her face was grim.
Alexander stood.
“What happened?”
“Vanessa got inside.”
Claire clutched the baby closer.
“Where is she?”
“We don’t know.”
Alexander stared.
Ortiz continued.
“She escaped during the evacuation.”
Claire’s eyes widened.
“Did she take a baby?”
Ortiz paused.
“One newborn is missing.”
The entire room froze.
Then Claire looked down at the child in her arms.
Their daughter was safe.
But another family’s baby wasn’t.
Vanessa had finally stolen the child she had been preparing for.
And now Claire knew exactly what she had to do.
“Find me a phone.”
Alexander stared at her.
“You just gave birth.”
Claire’s voice sharpened.
“Find me a phone.”
Because if Vanessa wanted to become Claire Holloway—
May you like
Claire was going to give her the one thing she could never resist.
A chance to prove she had won.
