Chapter 5 - The Perfect SurvivorVanessa’s story was extraordinary.

He was a person of interest in Vanessa Marlowe’s disappearance.

News helicopters circled above the hospital.

Reporters gathered outside every entrance.

Photographs of Vanessa’s abandoned car dominated television screens across the country.

The blood inside the vehicle matched Vanessa’s type.

A strand of her hair was caught in the passenger door.

Her phone had been left smashed beneath the driver’s seat.

Then police found the note.

Alexander Holloway is responsible.

Claire stared at Detective Ortiz.

“You cannot believe he did this.”

“I didn’t say I did.”

“He has been beside me almost the entire time.”

“Almost?”

Claire hated that word.

Alexander had left for forty-three minutes before sunrise to meet with hospital security.

Ortiz knew.

Vanessa had disappeared during that window.

Alexander sat calmly.

“Search my car.”

“We will.”

“Search my apartment.”

“We already requested a warrant.”

Claire looked at him.

He squeezed her hand.

“It’s okay.”

“No, it isn’t.”

“Claire.”

“She attacked me, and now she’s framing you.”

Ortiz studied them.

“You believe Ms. Marlowe staged her own disappearance?”

Claire answered immediately.

“Yes.”

Alexander was more careful.

“I believe Vanessa is capable of constructing narratives.”

Ortiz nodded.

“Then help me prove it.”

Police searched Alexander’s Bentley.

Nothing.

His office.

Nothing.

His home.

Nothing.

But the media didn’t need evidence.

An anonymous source leaked that Alexander had been questioned.

That became a headline.

Then another story claimed Alexander had recently threatened Vanessa.

The “threat” came from a text message sent two months earlier.

Stay away from my wife. This is your final warning.

Real.

But stripped of context.

Vanessa had spent weeks sending Claire photographs of Alexander from years before.

She had appeared outside Claire’s prenatal yoga studio.

She had sent flowers to the Holloway home with a card reading:

Some women borrow what belongs to others.

Alexander had warned her.

Now the warning looked sinister.

Claire’s doctors refused to discharge her.

Her blood pressure was climbing.

Stress wasn’t helping.

Alexander wanted every television removed from the room.

Claire refused.

“I need to know what she’s doing.”

“You need to rest.”

“I’m not hiding while she destroys us.”

“You’re carrying our daughter.”

“And I’m still your wife.”

Alexander looked at her.

That ended the argument.

Marcus discovered the first major break that evening.

Vanessa had withdrawn $200,000 in cash three days before the gala.

Her assistant claimed not to know why.

Then the assistant disappeared too.

“We need to find her,” Alexander said.

“We’re trying.”

“What about Pike?”

Marcus frowned.

“Who?”

Alexander explained the call records Detective Ortiz had uncovered between Vanessa and Dr. Evan Pike.

Pike had worked at St. Augustine for eleven years.

He also had administrative privileges in the surgical wing.

And gambling debts exceeding $600,000.

Ortiz brought him in.

Pike denied everything.

He claimed Vanessa called because she was considering donating to his medical research foundation.

Then investigators showed him the bank deposit.

Fifty thousand dollars.

Two days before the assault.

He called it a donation.

The foundation had no record of it.

Pike asked for a lawyer.

By midnight, police searched his apartment.

They found an external drive.

On it were hospital login credentials.

Security schedules.

Maintenance reports.

And a deleted email from Vanessa.

I need seventeen minutes. No hallway recording. No staff interruptions.

Pike’s attorney stopped the interview immediately.

But the damage was done.

Claire should have felt relieved.

Instead, she became more afraid.

Because if Vanessa had recruited a doctor to disable hospital cameras, then the attack had required far more planning than anyone understood.

“What did she want?” Claire whispered.

Alexander sat beside her.

“To separate us.”

“No. That’s not enough.”

He looked at her.

Claire shook her head.

“She could have spread rumors. She could have lied about an affair. She could have embarrassed me publicly. Why risk prison by attacking my baby?”

Alexander had no answer.

The answer arrived the next morning.

Marcus entered carrying a thick folder.

“We checked Vanessa’s financial records.”

Alexander looked up.

“And?”

“She’s almost broke.”

Claire blinked.

Vanessa came from one of New York’s wealthiest families.

Or so everyone believed.

Marcus explained.

Her father’s shipping company had collapsed quietly.

Properties were heavily mortgaged.

Trust funds had been drained.

Vanessa personally owed nearly twelve million dollars.

Alexander leaned back.

“So she needed money.”

“There’s more.”

Marcus opened the folder.

“Ten years ago, before you ended your relationship, your father drafted an investment agreement with Vanessa’s family.”

Alexander remembered.

The Marlowes wanted Holloway capital.

His father refused once Alexander and Vanessa separated.

Marcus slid forward another document.

“Vanessa believed the deal would have been worth hundreds of millions.”

Claire suddenly understood.

“She didn’t want Alexander.”

Marcus looked at her.

“Not only Alexander.”

Claire stared at the documents.

“She wanted access to his money.”

Alexander’s expression became cold.

Before anyone could speak again, Detective Ortiz called.

They had found Vanessa.

Alive.

She had walked into a police station in Connecticut barefoot, bruised, and covered in blood.

And she was telling officers a terrifying story.

She claimed Alexander Holloway had hired someone to abduct her.
