Chapter 3 - Claire Had Been Watching Them for Six WeeksClaire woke to the sound of a heartbeat.

He had been wrong.

Money could buy walls.

Security.

Lawyers.

Private roads.

A mansion large enough for family members to avoid one another for days.

But it could not prevent betrayal from sleeping under the same roof.

The ambulance carrying Claire disappeared beyond the gates while Adrian stood beneath the chandelier in Whitmore Manor's entrance hall, his hands covered in dust from the marble floor.

He could still feel Claire's fingers gripping his.

He could still hear her asking about the baby.

“Mr. Whitmore.”

Detective Marcus Hale approached him.

Adrian looked at him sharply.

“I'm going to the hospital.”

“You should.”

“Then why are you stopping me?”

“Because Claire asked me to tell you something if anything happened tonight.”

Adrian's expression changed.

“What?”

Hale lowered his voice.

“She said not to trust anyone in this house until we know who helped Vanessa.”

Adrian stared at him.

“Helped her?”

Hale glanced toward the staircase.

“That railing didn't loosen itself.”

Adrian slowly looked up.

The decorative brass railing Claire had reached for during her fall was visibly shifted from its base.

Someone had unscrewed two anchor bolts.

His stomach turned.

“That wasn't supposed to kill her,” Hale said. “Not by itself.”

Adrian looked back at him.

“It was supposed to make sure she couldn't stop herself from falling.”

Across the entrance hall, Vanessa stood between two officers.

She had stopped crying.

Her expensive silver evening dress glittered beneath the chandelier while guests watched her with a mixture of suspicion and fascination.

“This is insane,” Vanessa snapped. “You are treating me like a criminal because Claire lost her balance.”

Detective Hale walked toward her.

“You pushed her.”

“I tried to steady her.”

“Camera Four will clarify that.”

Vanessa's confidence flickered.

“You keep talking about cameras. This is Adrian's home. You can't secretly record people everywhere.”

Claire's mother-in-law, Eleanor, appeared from the drawing room.

“It is Claire's home too.”

Vanessa looked at her.

“And Claire gave law enforcement permission to install equipment in the common areas after receiving credible threats,” Hale said.

Vanessa swallowed.

Then smiled.

“You still need evidence.”

An officer came downstairs carrying a sealed evidence bag.

Inside it was a photograph.

Hale examined it.

Adrian stepped closer.

The image showed Claire leaving her obstetrician's clinic two weeks earlier.

A red circle had been drawn around her stomach.

Beneath it, someone had written:

BEFORE NOVEMBER 12.

Adrian's face hardened.

“Where did you find that?”

“Vanessa's bedroom.”

Vanessa laughed.

“You searched my bedroom?”

“Under a signed warrant.”

“For what?”

“Evidence connected to extortion, attempted fraud, stalking, and conspiracy.”

Guests murmured.

Vanessa looked toward Adrian.

“You can't believe this.”

He didn't answer.

An officer brought down another bag.

Inside was a birth certificate.

Adrian immediately recognized his own name.

Father: Adrian James Whitmore.

He frowned.

Then read the mother's name.

Mother: Vanessa Elise Cole.

His eyes snapped upward.

“What the hell is that?”

Vanessa's face went blank.

Eleanor came closer.

“There has never been a child between you.”

“No,” Adrian said.

Hale studied the document.

“The certificate appears fraudulent.”

“Why would she create it?”

“That,” Hale said, “is what we're going to determine.”

Vanessa shook her head.

“Someone planted those things.”

“Who?”

“Claire.”

Eleanor laughed once.

Not with humor.

“With all due respect,” Vanessa said, “Claire has been obsessed with me for months.”

Adrian turned toward her.

“Claire barely mentioned you.”

“Because she was pretending.”

Vanessa took a step closer.

“She knew you loved me before you married her.”

Adrian froze.

The room went quiet.

Eleanor's expression tightened.

Vanessa saw the reaction and pressed harder.

“You never told her?”

Adrian said nothing.

Vanessa smiled.

“There it is.”

Claire had always known Vanessa and Adrian had dated briefly during college.

What she did not know was how Vanessa remembered it.

To Adrian, it had been an immature relationship that ended twenty years ago.

To Vanessa, it had been a promise interrupted.

“You think this is about jealousy?” Adrian asked.

“I think Claire knew she could never become part of this family the way I could.”

“You pushed my pregnant wife down a staircase.”

“You didn't see that.”

“I don't need to.”

Adrian's voice dropped.

“Because I know my wife.”

Vanessa stared at him.

Then whispered, “Do you?”

The hospital called.

Adrian answered immediately.

“Yes?”

His face changed as he listened.

Eleanor reached for his arm.

“What is it?”

He closed his eyes.

“They're taking Claire into surgery.”

Vanessa looked away.

“The baby's heart rate dropped,” Adrian said.

For the first time all evening, his composure completely shattered.

He turned toward the door.

Hale stopped him only long enough to say, “Go.”

Adrian left with Eleanor.

Vanessa watched them disappear.

Then Hale faced her.

“Let's talk about the forged birth certificate.”

“I want my lawyer.”

“You're entitled to one.”

“I am not answering anything.”

“That's probably wise.”

Hale began walking away.

Vanessa called after him.

“You don't understand what's happening.”

He turned.

Vanessa's eyes were cold now.

No tears.

No performance.

“If Claire survives tonight,” she said, “she's going to wish she hadn't.”

Hale studied her.

“Is that a threat?”

Vanessa smiled.

“No.”

She glanced toward the east wing.

“It's a warning.”

Thirty minutes later, technicians entered Adrian's private office.

They found no signs of forced entry.

Nothing appeared disturbed.

Until one forensic investigator examined the family portrait hanging behind Adrian's desk.

There was a fingerprint along the frame.

The painting moved.

Behind it was a wall safe.

Adrian had told Detective Hale about the safe.

He had also provided the combination.

But when officers opened it, the documents Claire said should be there were gone.

In their place sat a single white envelope.

Hale opened it.

Inside was a photograph taken twenty-seven years earlier.

Adrian was seventeen.

Vanessa was sixteen.

And standing beside them was Adrian's younger brother, Jonathan Whitmore.

Jonathan had died in a boating accident when he was nineteen.

At least, that was what the family had always believed.

Written across the photograph were six words:

ASK ELEANOR WHO REALLY DIED THAT NIGHT.

Hale looked toward the mansion doors.

For the first time, the case became larger than Vanessa.

Much larger.

And at the hospital, while doctors fought to stabilize Claire and her unborn baby, Eleanor Whitmore sat alone in a waiting room staring at an old voicemail on her phone.

A voicemail Claire had sent her that morning.

“Eleanor, if anything happens to me tonight, please don't protect Adrian from the truth anymore.”

Eleanor pressed stop.

Her hands were shaking.

May you like

Because Claire had discovered the one secret Eleanor had spent nearly three decades burying.

And if Claire told Adrian what she knew, the Whitmore family would never be the same again.
