Chapter 7 - Claire Set the Trap From a Hospital BedDetective Hale refused Claire's plan three times.

Vanessa Cole had been nineteen.
Jonathan Whitmore had been living under another name.
And Rebecca Cole had been preparing her daughter for a lie that would eventually consume two families.
Detective Hale uncovered the first piece through an old medical insurance claim.
Rebecca had paid cash for Vanessa's delivery at a private clinic in Pennsylvania.
No father was listed.
The baby was registered as stillborn.
There was no death certificate.
No burial record.
No cremation record.
Nothing.
Hale brought the information to Claire that evening.
“So the baby lived?” she asked.
“We believe so.”
Adrian stood beside her hospital bed.
“Where?”
“We're working on it.”
Claire remembered Jonathan's words.
Your father didn't leave the Whitmore fortune to Adrian. He left it to my child.
“Why would Charles leave everything to Jonathan's child?” Claire asked.
Adrian looked toward the window.
“Guilt.”
Hale nodded.
“That's one possibility.”
The old Whitmore trust had been revised several times.
The public version transferred controlling family assets to Adrian.
But Claire had found references to another trust document.
An original.
A document Jonathan believed she possessed.
“I don't,” Claire said.
“Maybe you do without realizing it.”
Claire frowned.
Hale asked, “Where did the anonymous package come from?”
“No return address.”
“What contained the documents?”
“A cardboard file box.”
“Anything unusual?”
Claire thought.
“The bottom felt too thick.”
Hale and Adrian exchanged looks.
“The box is still at the mansion?”
“In my dressing room.”
Police retrieved it.
The bottom panel was double-layered.
Hidden inside was an envelope sealed with wax.
The document within had been signed by Charles Whitmore twenty-three years earlier.
Adrian read it in silence.
Then handed it to Hale.
Charles had created a protected inheritance for the biological child of Jonathan Whitmore.
Forty percent of Whitmore Holdings.
Two residential properties.
A trust then valued at $310 million.
Today, worth several times that.
The beneficiary had been identified only by birth date.
December 14.
Twenty-four years earlier.
“Name?” Claire asked.
“Not listed.”
“Why?”
Adrian continued reading.
Then stopped.
“There is a condition.”
“What condition?”
“The beneficiary must submit DNA proof before turning twenty-five.”
Hale checked the calendar.
“December 14 is four months away.”
Claire felt the case snap into place.
Vanessa didn't merely want Claire gone.
She needed something before December.
“Why target my baby?”
Adrian said quietly, “Because inheritance isn't the only issue.”
Hale looked at him.
Adrian explained.
“If Jonathan's child proves parentage, it could destabilize company ownership. But my daughter is my direct heir.”
Claire understood.
“Two heirs competing.”
“Not exactly.”
He read deeper.
Charles's document included a clause stating that if Jonathan had a verified child, voting control would be split with Adrian's biological descendants.
Vanessa and Jonathan could become enormously wealthy.
But not fully dominant.
Unless Adrian had no descendants.
Claire touched her stomach.
There it was.
The reason.
Hale said, “We still need to identify Jonathan's child.”
Claire stared at the forged certificate.
“Vanessa tried to fabricate Adrian as the father.”
“Probably as a backup strategy.”
“Meaning if Jonathan couldn't legally be restored to his identity…”
“She could claim the child through Adrian instead.”
Adrian laughed without humor.
“She spent two decades preparing both possibilities.”
That night, police finally identified the child.
Her name was Lily Mercer.
Twenty-four years old.
Elementary school teacher.
No criminal record.
Living in a small apartment sixty miles away.
Her birth certificate named Rebecca Cole's deceased cousin as her mother.
No father listed.
Claire asked the obvious question.
“Does she know?”
Hale shook his head.
“We don't believe so.”
Adrian looked at him.
“Where is she now?”
Hale hesitated.
“She didn't report to work today.”
Claire's stomach tightened.
“Did anyone check her apartment?”
“Yes.”
“And?”
“Door unlocked. Phone inside. Purse inside.”
Adrian stared.
“She was taken.”
“We don't know that yet.”
Then Hale's phone rang.
He answered.
His expression shifted.
“Send it.”
Seconds later, a video appeared.
Jonathan sat in an abandoned boathouse.
Beside him was Lily.
Alive.
Terrified.
Bound to a chair.
Claire covered her mouth.
Jonathan looked into the camera.
“Adrian, twenty-seven years ago our father stole my name.”
He leaned forward.
“Twenty-four years ago he stole my daughter.”
Lily stared at him in horror.
Jonathan continued.
“Tonight, I'm taking both back.”
Then Vanessa stepped into frame.
Claire's blood ran cold.
“How is she there?”
Hale was already calling the station.
“She was in custody.”
Adrian looked at him.
Hale's expression darkened.
“Not anymore.”
Vanessa had been transported to a medical facility after claiming severe chest pain.
The ambulance had been intercepted.
The guard escorting her was found unconscious.
The driver had disappeared.
The video continued.
Vanessa touched Lily's shoulder.
“My sweet girl.”
Lily recoiled.
“Don't touch me.”
Vanessa's smile vanished.
“You don't understand yet.”
“Understand what?”
Vanessa looked directly into the camera.
“That everything we've done has been for you.”
Lily began crying.
“I don't know you.”
Vanessa knelt.
“But you will.”
She touched her own chest.
“I'm your mother.”
Lily stared.
Vanessa smiled through tears.
“And Jonathan is your father.”
The video ended.
Claire looked toward Adrian.
“This isn't an inheritance scheme anymore.”
Hale nodded.
“No.”
“They're building a family.”
“Yes.”
Claire whispered, “By destroying ours.”
Adrian's phone buzzed again.
A text message.
One photograph.
Whitmore Manor.
Taken from somewhere beyond the north trees.
Timestamp: two minutes ago.
Below it:
BRING THE ORIGINAL TRUST HOME TOMORROW NIGHT. NO POLICE.
Then another message appeared.
OR LILY DIES FIRST.
A third followed.
CLAIRE AND THE BABY WILL BE NEXT.
Adrian looked at Detective Hale.
“They're coming back to the mansion.”
Claire shook her head.
“No.”
Both men looked at her.
Claire's eyes hardened.
“They're not coming back to the mansion.”
May you like
She turned toward Hale.
“We're inviting them.”
