Chapter 9 - Someone Inside Whitmore Holdings Was Still Helping HimJonathan Whitmore had spent twenty-seven years learning patience.

Eleanor's voice shook.

Vanessa's gun remained steady.

“No more secrets.”

Jonathan stared at his mother.

“What is she talking about?”

Eleanor closed her eyes.

“Lily isn't your biological daughter.”

Silence swallowed the room.

Lily looked at Jonathan.

He looked as though the floor had disappeared beneath him.

“What?”

Vanessa smiled.

“Oh, this part is my favorite.”

“Shut up,” Eleanor said.

Vanessa laughed.

“You protected your precious boys for twenty-seven years, Eleanor. Tell them what Charles did.”

Adrian stepped closer.

“My father?”

Eleanor began crying.

“When Vanessa became pregnant, Jonathan was already gone.”

Jonathan stared.

“We were together before I left.”

“Yes.”

“So the child could have been mine.”

Eleanor looked at Adrian.

Claire understood before he did.

“No,” she whispered.

Adrian turned toward her.

Claire shook her head.

Vanessa's smile widened.

“Come on, Adrian.”

He went pale.

“No.”

“You were drunk at the lake house after Jonathan's memorial.”

“No.”

“You were seventeen.”

“Nothing happened.”

Vanessa's face hardened.

“You don't remember.”

Adrian stared at her.

“She's lying.”

Eleanor whispered, “Charles believed the child might be yours.”

Adrian's knees almost gave out.

Claire watched him.

Lily stepped backward.

“You're saying…”

“No one knew,” Eleanor said quickly. “Not for certain.”

Jonathan looked at Vanessa.

“You told me she was mine.”

“I needed her to be yours.”

“Why?”

“Because your father promised more money if she was yours than if she was Adrian's.”

Jonathan stared at her with disgust.

“You used our daughter.”

“Our daughter?”

Vanessa screamed.

“She was never anyone's daughter! She was an asset to your family from the moment she was born!”

Lily flinched.

Claire felt fury rise.

“You're wrong.”

Vanessa looked at her.

Claire continued.

“She became someone's daughter the moment the Mercers adopted her.”

Lily's eyes filled with tears.

Vanessa's hand tightened around the gun.

“Stay out of this.”

“No.”

“You don't know anything.”

“I know Lily grew up without this.”

Claire gestured around the mansion.

“And somehow she became better than everyone who tried to own her.”

Vanessa raised the gun toward Claire.

Adrian stepped between them.

“Don't.”

Police moved.

Hale shouted, “Weapon down!”

Vanessa spun.

Jonathan lunged.

The gun fired.

Claire screamed.

Jonathan collapsed against the wall.

Lily rushed toward him.

“Jonathan!”

Officers tackled Vanessa.

The gun skidded across the floor.

Hale kicked it away.

Jonathan clutched his shoulder.

Blood spread across his shirt.

Vanessa screamed as officers handcuffed her.

“You're making a mistake!”

Nobody listened.

Paramedics entered minutes later.

Jonathan survived.

Vanessa returned to custody.

And Lily agreed to provide DNA.

Forty-eight hours later, the results arrived.

Claire sat beside Adrian in a private conference room.

Lily sat opposite them.

Hale placed the report on the table.

“Jonathan is not Lily's biological father.”

Jonathan, recovering under guard in the hospital, had already been informed.

Adrian stared at the paper.

“And me?”

Hale looked at him.

“You aren't either.”

Adrian released a breath he had not realized he was holding.

Lily closed her eyes.

“Then who is?”

Hale hesitated.

“This test produced a familial match to another sample.”

“Whose?”

“Samuel Reed.”

The room went silent.

The boy who had died on the boat.

Lily stared.

“Samuel was my father?”

“Yes.”

Claire understood.

That explained everything.

Twenty-seven years earlier, Samuel and Jonathan had fought over Vanessa.

Three years later, Vanessa gave birth to Samuel's child.

But Samuel was dead.

Jonathan was hidden.

Adrian came from wealth.

Rebecca and Vanessa turned uncertainty into opportunity.

Adrian whispered, “My father knew.”

Hale nodded.

“He appears to have suspected.”

“And instead of exposing Vanessa…”

“He paid Rebecca.”

“To protect the family's reputation.”

“And eventually created a trust for Lily.”

Claire frowned.

“Why would he leave her Jonathan's inheritance if she wasn't Jonathan's child?”

Hale pulled out another document.

“Because Charles knew Samuel's death had been covered up.”

Lily looked at him.

“The trust wasn't inheritance.”

“It was restitution.”

Charles Whitmore had used money to bury a crime.

Then used more money to compensate the child of the person who died.

A private attempt to correct an injustice without admitting it publicly.

Adrian laughed bitterly.

“Even his apology was secret.”

Claire reached for his hand.

Lily stared at the documents.

“What happens to the trust?”

“That becomes a legal question,” Hale said.

Adrian answered first.

“You keep it.”

Lily looked up.

“What?”

“If my father intended that money for you because of what happened to Samuel, then it belongs to you.”

“I don't want your family's money.”

“Good.”

Adrian managed a tired smile.

“Because it's caused enough problems.”

Lily almost smiled.

Then Claire noticed Hale had not packed his files.

“There’s more.”

He nodded.

“Vanessa has been talking.”

“Finally?”

“She wants a reduced sentence.”

“She pushed me down a staircase and tried to poison my pregnancy.”

“She can ask. Prosecutors don't have to agree.”

“What did she give you?”

“A location.”

Jonathan had maintained a hidden property under a false identity.

Police searched it.

They found financial records, surveillance equipment, and decades of communications with Rebecca Cole.

But they also found something unexpected.

A wall covered with photographs.

Not Claire.

Not Adrian.

Eleanor.

Every photograph centered on Eleanor.

Some were recent.

Some were decades old.

Claire frowned.

“Why was Jonathan watching his mother?”

Hale looked toward Adrian.

“Because Jonathan didn't return for the trust.”

“What did he return for?”

“Revenge.”

“Against my mother?”

“Against the entire Whitmore family.”

The detective opened a folder.

Inside was a handwritten timeline.

It included the gala.

Claire's pregnancy.

The foundation audit.

Lily's twenty-fifth birthday.

And one final date.

Three weeks from now.

Next to it were two words.

FINAL RECKONING.

“What happens in three weeks?” Claire asked.

Adrian went pale.

“Our company's annual shareholder meeting.”

Hale nodded.

“Jonathan planned to reveal everything publicly.”

Claire studied the timeline.

“That isn't revenge.”

“What do you mean?”

“It is if he only wants humiliation.”

She pointed to several coded entries.

“But these are financial transactions.”

Hale looked closer.

Claire continued.

“He wasn't only going to expose the company.”

May you like

She looked at Adrian.

“He was going to destroy it.”
