Chapter 6 - The Child Hidden for Twenty-Four YearsThe secret began in a hospital room twenty-four years earlier.

Her lawyer had advised silence.

Vanessa ignored him.

She sat across from Detective Hale in an interview room at the county sheriff's office wearing a borrowed gray sweater instead of the silver gown she'd worn at the gala.

Her makeup was gone.

Her hair was pulled back.

She looked younger.

And somehow colder.

“I did not push Claire with the intention of harming the baby.”

Hale studied her.

“That may be the least convincing sentence I've heard this week.”

“She confronted me.”

“Then you pushed her.”

“She grabbed me.”

“The recording shows otherwise.”

Vanessa leaned back.

“You have one angle.”

“We have three.”

That silenced her.

Hale placed photographs on the table.

The nursery.

The crib.

The ultrasound.

“Explain these.”

Vanessa stared at them for several seconds.

“I've never seen that room.”

“We found your fingerprints on a package of newborn diapers.”

Her attorney sighed.

“Vanessa, stop talking.”

But Vanessa's attention remained on Hale.

“Do you have children, Detective?”

“Not relevant.”

“You don't.”

Hale said nothing.

Vanessa smiled.

“I can always tell.”

Her lawyer rubbed his forehead.

“Vanessa.”

She ignored him.

“People without children think pregnancy is a magical moral shield. Suddenly everything a pregnant woman says becomes sacred.”

“Claire had evidence.”

“Claire was paranoid.”

“Someone replaced her vitamins.”

Vanessa's smile faded.

“Wasn't me.”

“Someone followed her.”

“Wasn't me.”

“Someone built a nursery for her child.”

Vanessa leaned closer.

“Maybe Claire built it herself.”

Hale studied her.

“For what purpose?”

“To make me look insane.”

“You don't seem to need much assistance.”

Her lawyer whispered her name.

Vanessa finally looked away.

Hale changed direction.

“Tell me about Jonathan Whitmore.”

Nothing.

Not even a blink.

Hale knew.

“You knew he was alive.”

“You were with him the night Samuel Reed died.”

“You helped his father conceal the truth.”

“I was sixteen.”

“And now?”

Vanessa stared at him.

“What about now?”

“Now you're forty-three.”

“So?”

“Are you still helping Jonathan?”

She smiled.

“You should ask Eleanor.”

Hale's phone buzzed.

He checked the message.

Hospital.

Claire had asked to speak with him.

He stood.

Vanessa watched him.

“Detective?”

He paused.

“You think Claire is the victim.”

“She was pushed down a staircase.”

Vanessa's eyes narrowed.

“She wasn't supposed to be the victim.”

Hale turned fully.

“What does that mean?”

Her attorney immediately intervened.

“My client is finished.”

Vanessa laughed softly.

“You're all looking at this backward.”

“Vanessa.”

Her attorney touched her arm.

She pulled away.

“Claire thinks she discovered a conspiracy.”

Hale waited.

“She didn't discover it.”

“What happened?”

Vanessa smiled.

“We let her find it.”

At the hospital, Claire was sitting upright for the first time.

Adrian stood by the window.

Neither had spoken much since he returned.

His mother was being questioned.

His brother was alive.

His former girlfriend had attempted to harm his wife.

And someone wanted their unborn daughter.

Claire understood why he had withdrawn into silence.

But she needed him present now.

Detective Hale arrived.

Claire looked immediately at him.

“Jonathan?”

“Still missing.”

“Vanessa?”

“In custody pending charging decisions.”

“What did she say?”

“That you were allowed to discover the conspiracy.”

Claire frowned.

Adrian turned from the window.

“Meaning?”

“We don't know.”

Claire thought back through the previous six weeks.

The envelope.

The bank statements.

The autopsy report.

The vitamins.

The deleted security footage.

Everything had felt hidden.

But perhaps it had been hidden badly on purpose.

“She wanted me to investigate,” Claire whispered.

Hale nodded.

“Possibly.”

“Why?”

Adrian crossed his arms.

“To lead you somewhere.”

Claire suddenly remembered.

“My prenatal clinic.”

“What about it?” Hale asked.

“The first anonymous message came the same afternoon I met a new nurse.”

“Name?”

“Rachel.”

“Last name?”

“I don't remember.”

Claire looked at Adrian.

“She asked strange questions.”

“About the baby?”

“About our security.”

Hale's face changed.

“What exactly?”

“She asked whether I was planning a home birth. Whether our house had staff overnight. I thought she was making conversation.”

“Did you ever see her again?”

“Once.”

“When?”

“The day before I found the vitamins.”

Hale stepped into the hallway and made a call.

Twenty minutes later, he returned.

“The clinic has no employee named Rachel.”

Claire's skin went cold.

“They checked records?”

“They had a temporary nurse working under that name for eleven days.”

“Then what?”

“She disappeared.”

“Fake credentials?”

“Yes.”

Hale placed his phone on the table.

A photograph appeared.

Claire recognized the woman immediately.

“That’s her.”

Adrian leaned closer.

The woman had dark hair and glasses.

Hale swiped to another photograph.

Same woman.

Blonde hair.

No glasses.

Police booking photo.

“Her real name is Rebecca Jane Cole.”

Vanessa's mother.

Claire stared.

“How old is that picture?”

“Seven years.”

“What's she wanted for?”

“Identity fraud.”

Adrian looked at Hale.

“My father paid her for decades.”

“Yes.”

“And she impersonated a nurse near my pregnant wife.”

“Yes.”

Claire's heartbeat quickened.

“She had access to my medical file.”

Hale nodded.

“Possibly.”

Claire touched her stomach.

“What did she need?”

Nobody answered.

Then Adrian's phone rang.

Unknown number.

He stared at it.

Hale nodded.

“Answer.”

Adrian put it on speaker.

“Hello?”

A man's voice answered.

Older.

Calm.

“Hello, brother.”

Adrian went completely still.

Jonathan.

Claire saw his hand tremble.

“Where are you?”

“You always were impatient.”

“You've been stalking my wife.”

“No.”

“Then who has?”

“People who wanted you to see what your family became.”

Adrian looked at Hale.

“What do you want?”

Jonathan was silent.

Then he said, “Come to the marina.”

“No.”

“Come alone.”

“Absolutely not.”

Jonathan laughed.

“Claire has something that belongs to me.”

Claire frowned.

“What?”

Jonathan heard her.

“Hello, Claire.”

Adrian grabbed the phone.

“Stay away from my wife.”

“She already found it.”

Claire whispered, “Found what?”

“The original trust.”

Adrian looked at her.

Claire shook her head.

She had no idea what he meant.

Jonathan continued.

“Your father didn't leave the Whitmore fortune to Adrian.”

Silence.

“He left it to my child.”

Adrian stared at the phone.

“You don't have a child.”

Jonathan laughed.

“That's where you're wrong.”

The call ended.

Claire looked at Hale.

The detective's expression had changed.

“What?”

He slowly pulled the forged birth certificate from his case file.

Father: Adrian Whitmore.

Mother: Vanessa Cole.

“Maybe,” Hale said, “we've been reading this document the wrong way.”

Claire stared at Vanessa's name.

And then she understood.

“Vanessa has a child.”

Hale nodded.

“Or had one.”

Adrian frowned.

“But I was never the father.”

“No,” Claire whispered.

“You weren't.”

May you like

She looked toward the photograph of Jonathan.

“He was.”
