Chapter 12 - ROOM 314

Emily did not remember the helicopter lifting from the lake.

One moment she was staring at Charles on the monitor. The next she was above Chicago, gripping a headset and begging the pilot to fly faster.

Lakeshore Haven had been evacuated after a false fire alarm. Charles had entered in a paramedic uniform and stayed behind with Emily's mother.

He demanded Emily come alone.

Adrian sat across from her in the helicopter, Ethan asleep against Charlotte beside him.

"You are not going alone," he said.

"He will hurt her."

"He may hurt her whether you obey or not."

"That is my mother."

"And that is why he chose her."

Emily looked at Ethan's sleeping face and remembered the sidewalk, the blood, the way strangers had kept walking.

"People told me to hand him over too," she said. "They said I did not understand."

Adrian lowered his eyes.

"And you were right not to."

At Lakeshore Haven, Emily entered without a weapon or radio. Smoke from a harmless theatrical device drifted through the halls. Room 314 stood open.

Her mother sat beside the window. Charles stood behind her, one hand on his cane.

"Emily," her mother said, relieved. "This gentleman says he knows you."

Charles smiled. "She does not remember the news. A merciful condition."

Emily stepped inside.

"What do you want?"

"To understand why you ruined twenty years of work."

"You ruined it. You believed fear made people obedient."

"It usually does."

A blade slid from the tip of his cane.

Emily's mother watched with mild confusion.

"Is this about money?" she asked.

Charles ignored her. "Your weakness brought you here."

Emily looked at her mother.

"Mom, do you remember the red bird game?"

Her mother's eyes brightened. "When the nurses changed my medicine."

"Yes. Red bird."

Emily pointed toward the window. A red emergency helicopter swept past the glass.

Her mother dropped to the floor.

The blade cut empty air.

Emily threw a water pitcher at Charles. He staggered. Adrian entered through the bathroom vent while Bennett's team rushed in from the hall.

Charles seized Emily's mother and held the blade near her throat.

"Everyone out."

Emily's mother began humming.

It was the song she had sung when Emily was small.

Charles tightened his grip. "Quiet."

Emily kept her voice calm.

"You think she cannot understand you."

"She cannot."

Her mother stopped humming.

"Your tie is ugly," she told Charles.

Then she drove her elbow into his ribs exactly as Emily had taught her.

Adrian pulled her free. Bennett tackled Charles. This time, there was nowhere left for him to escape.

As officers led him away, he looked at Emily.

"Saving people never ends."

Emily held her mother close.

"Maybe that is the point."

The trials began three months later. Rourke, Charles, and dozens of conspirators faced public charges. Hearings revealed how private contractors had gained control over emergency systems while citizens were told it was for their safety.

Emily testified for six hours.

Outside the courthouse, a reporter asked what made her stop for Ethan.

"He was alone," Emily said. "That should have been enough."

That evening, Charlotte invited Emily to dinner. Ethan ran to her with the repaired airplane.

"Em," he said, hugging her knees.

For the first time in months, Emily believed the worst was over.

Then Adrian received a sealed intelligence report.

Charles had made one final transfer before his arrest.

Ten million dollars had been placed in an account under Emily Carter's name.
