Chapter 8 - ELEVEN SECONDS FROM FIRE

The countdown moved too fast.
Fifty-nine.
Fifty-eight.
Fifty-seven.
Emily stared at the console, trying to force meaning from the rows of codes. The map of Chicago looked like a body covered in wounds. Hospitals blinked red. Bridges blinked red. Power stations blinked red.
Rourke lay on the floor laughing while Adrian pinned him down.
"There is no cancellation command," Rourke said. "Cerberus was designed to outlive hesitation."
Jonah rushed in with his computer. "Every system has an interrupt."
"Not this one. Only presidential authorization can delay it. Not cancel it. Delay."
"Where?" Emily demanded.
"Broadcast studio," Jonah said. "Biometric reader."
"Then move."
They dragged the President back through the passage. The studio reeked of smoke and foam. Cameras still pointed toward the stage. The countdown appeared on every monitor.
Thirty-four seconds.
The President faced the lens.
"Cerberus emergency action delay. Authorization Mercer, Elias, seven-one-nine."
The screen flashed red.
VOICE STRESS DETECTED. AUTHORIZATION INVALID.
"He is hurt," Ortiz said. "The system reads stress as coercion."
Twenty-six seconds.
Emily turned to Charlotte. "Bring Ethan where he can see him."
Charlotte hesitated only once.
Ethan appeared in the doorway, wrapped in Adrian's shirt, clutching the silver airplane.
The President's face changed. Fear loosened its grip.
"Grandpa," Ethan said.
The old man's eyes filled with tears.
Jonah restarted the scan.
"Cerberus emergency action delay," the President repeated, calmer now. "Authorization Mercer, Elias, seven-one-nine."
The system accepted his voice.
The countdown stopped at eleven seconds.
For one breath, everyone lived.
Then a second warning appeared.
DELAY DURATION: TEN MINUTES. FULL CANCELLATION REQUIRES THREE CABINET AUTHORIZATIONS.
Two Cabinet officers were missing. One was standing in the public broadcast chamber, preparing to swear Rourke into power.
They found the detained Secretary of Defense and Attorney General in separate holding rooms. Bennett freed them while Emily, Charlotte, Cole, and the President moved toward the broadcast chamber.
Alarms blared. Cerberus guards flooded the operations floor.
The President stepped into the open.
"Stand down."
Several guards froze.
Their commander raised his rifle.
"He is an impostor!"
Emily connected her camera to the giant command screens. Charlotte's video filled the room. Rourke's red tie appeared beside the false convoy. Daniel Pierce's final message identified the conspiracy.
One guard lowered his weapon.
Then another.
The commander fired anyway.
Cole stepped into the bullet.
He fell against Emily, his blood darkening the floor.
"You owed me," she whispered, kneeling beside him.
He managed the smallest smile. "Debt paid."
Ortiz rushed to him as Bennett's soldiers secured the room.
Four minutes remained.
In the broadcast chamber, Secretary of State Margaret Sloan stood beneath bright lights while cameras transmitted to the world. A judge held the oath. Reporters whispered over breaking news that the dead President might be alive.
Emily entered first.
Every camera turned toward the accused terrorist.
Then the President walked in behind her.
The chamber erupted.
Rourke, who had escaped during the chaos, appeared on the upper balcony with a gun. He aimed not at the President, but down the corridor where Ortiz held Ethan.
Adrian saw him.
So did Emily.
Rourke fired.
Adrian hurled himself across the balcony rail, knocking the weapon aside. Both men crashed through glass and landed on the stage. Rourke reached for the gun.
Ethan threw the silver airplane.
It struck Rourke's hand.
Emily kicked the gun away.
Bennett arrested him while the world watched live.
The freed Cabinet officers arrived with less than one minute left. Together with the President, they entered the cancellation codes.
The city map went dark.
Chicago did not burn.
For one second, the broadcast chamber was silent.
Then the President turned to the cameras.
"My fellow Americans, you were told to fear the woman standing beside me. The truth is that she saved my grandson, my family, and this city."
Emily looked at Ethan.
He smiled for the first time.
But behind the cameras, Charlotte had opened a newly decrypted Cerberus file.
Her own smile disappeared.
She handed the screen to Adrian.
May you like
The conspiracy had not begun with Rourke.
And it did not end with him.
