Chapter 4 - THE SECRET IN THE SILVER AIRPLANE

Emily slammed the accelerator before the commander finished speaking.

The Honda jumped the curb, clipped a line of metal barricades, and tore across the pedestrian plaza as police opened fire. The windshield starred with cracks. Cole threw a ballistic panel over Ethan and Emily, while Adrian returned fire only at the pavement near the officers' feet.

"You are missing on purpose," Emily shouted.

"They may not know they are following illegal orders."

"That is extremely noble and very inconvenient."

She swerved behind a delivery truck, using its steel body as cover, then cut into a service alley beside the old printing annex. Smoke rose from the Honda's hood.

"She is done," Emily said.

"Can she make one more block?" Adrian asked.

"She has been making promises she cannot keep since 2014."

The car died inside the abandoned annex, surrounded by silent printing presses and yellowed newspapers. Emily pulled Ethan free while the others secured the entrance. Dust swirled in the shafts of emergency light.

"This way."

She led them down a maintenance stairwell into a forgotten control room beneath the building. The air smelled of rust, wet concrete, and old ink.

Adrian removed the memory card from inside the silver toy airplane and inserted it into Emily's camera.

One encrypted video appeared.

"Password," Mason said.

Ethan, still trembling, tapped the damaged wing of the airplane. Four tiny numbers had been scratched into the metal.

0417.

Adrian entered them.

Charlotte Vale appeared on the camera screen.

Her blonde hair was pulled back, her cheek bruised, her voice low and urgent. She sat inside a vehicle that rocked as if moving too fast.

"If you are seeing this, the Cerberus Protocol has been activated."

Cole whispered a curse.

Charlotte explained that Cerberus had begun as a continuity plan: a government safeguard designed for catastrophic attacks. But private contractors, military hardliners, and political extremists had twisted it into something else. A system that could create an emergency, suspend communications, seize infrastructure, and replace elected leadership while the public begged for order.

"The attack is not meant to destroy the government," Charlotte said. "It is meant to make people surrender it willingly."

Her voice cracked only once.

"I do not know whom to trust. I can trust Adrian only if Ethan still reaches for him. If Ethan refuses, then they have already used Adrian's image to frighten him."

Emily looked at Adrian. His face had gone gray.

The video shifted to shaky footage filmed from the height of a child. A man in a red tie stood beside the false motorcade, speaking to Daniel Pierce. The man turned.

Vice President Malcolm Rourke.

"Red man," Emily said softly.

Ethan had not been warning her about Adrian.

He had been naming the man who took his family.

Before anyone could speak, pounding shook the steel door.

"Federal rescue team! Adrian Vale, identify yourself!"

Mason moved toward it.

Cole grabbed his arm. "No one knows we are here."

The voice outside changed.

"Emily Carter, your mother is on the line."

Then Emily heard her mother's voice.

"Emily? Honey, please open the door. They said they are helping you."

The sound broke through every rational defense she had. Her mother sounded frightened, confused, and small.

Emily reached for the lock.

Ethan suddenly pointed to the ventilation grate.

"Speaker," he whispered.

Mason ripped the grate away and found a wireless device playing the recording.

A second later, an explosive charge blew the door inward.

They escaped through a drainage tunnel as armed men stormed the room behind them. Cold river water rose around their knees. Ethan shivered so violently that Adrian stripped off his shirt and wrapped it around him.

The tunnel led to an unused subway service station.

A single train waited on the dark track.

Its doors opened.

A woman in a navy coat stepped out with both hands raised.

"My name is Dr. Lena Ortiz," she said. "I am the President's physician."

Adrian aimed his weapon at her.

She looked past him, straight at Ethan's bandaged forehead.

"That injury is not from the crash," she said. "Someone operated on him."

Emily's stomach turned.

May you like

Dr. Ortiz took one careful step closer.

"And unless I remove what they placed beneath his skin, everyone in this tunnel will be dead within twenty minutes."
