Chapter 3 - The Dead Man's PasswordBy seven the next morning, Whitmore Global was under siege.

Then the ballroom exploded.
Phones came out.
Guests began whispering.
Someone near the back audibly said, "Oh my God."
Celeste stood beneath the orchids, one hand covering her mouth.
Marcus reached for her.
"Celeste, stop talking."
That was his second mistake.
His first had been assuming the servants were invisible.
Adrien looked from Celeste to Marcus with the strange calm of a man who had just watched six years of trust collapse in a single sentence.
"What affair story?" he asked.
Celeste recovered quickly.
She always did.
"This is being twisted."
"You said you spent six months building an affair story."
"I was angry."
"With Marcus."
"No."
"You said Marcus and I."
"I misspoke."
Marcus stepped forward.
"Adrien, let's take this somewhere private."
Adrien turned toward him.
"Why?"
"Because there are cameras everywhere."
"Exactly."
Marcus stopped.
Maya watched the crowd change.
Five minutes earlier, she had been the scandal.
Now everyone was staring at Celeste.
That did not mean Maya was safe.
A woman near the champagne tower was already posting video.
Another guest whispered that Maya had seduced Adrien.
A third insisted she had planned the confrontation.
Scandal did not care about truth.
It only cared about speed.
Adrien noticed Maya retreating.
"Don't leave."
"I shouldn't be here."
"You may be the only person who should."
Celeste laughed bitterly.
"Of course. Protect her."
Adrien looked at her.
"You were going to frame me for cheating."
"I never said that."
"You just did."
Celeste's father, Harrison Harrington, pushed through the crowd.
At sixty-seven, Harrison was tall, silver-haired, and feared across Wall Street.
He looked at his daughter.
"What did you do?"
Celeste swallowed.
"Dad—"
"Answer me."
Marcus intervened.
"Harrison, this is a misunderstanding."
Harrison's eyes moved toward him.
"I wasn't speaking to you."
Celeste's mother looked close to fainting.
Adrien stepped toward the microphone.
"Everyone, this celebration is over."
The ballroom quieted.
"I apologize to our guests. There will be no engagement announcement tonight."
Celeste stared at him.
"Adrien."
He removed the engagement ring from her finger before she could react.
Someone gasped.
"I said it's over."
"You can't humiliate me like this."
Adrien's expression barely changed.
"You were planning to destroy my company."
"You don't know what you heard."
"Maya does."
Celeste turned toward Maya.
Hatred replaced panic.
"She works for you. She wants money."
Maya's face burned.
She had expected this.
What she had not expected was Adrien answering instantly.
"Maya Coleman has never asked me for anything."
"She kissed you!"
"You grabbed her. You called her a liar. Your partner tried to silence her. And then you confessed."
"Partner?" Celeste snapped. "Marcus isn't my partner."
Marcus looked at her.
That was interesting.
Adrien noticed too.
"Then why was he helping you build an affair narrative?"
No answer.
Adrien looked toward security chief David Ross.
"Lock the study."
Marcus stiffened.
"Excuse me?"
"Nobody enters. Nobody removes anything."
"You can't legally—"
"It's my house."
Marcus stepped toward Adrien.
"Think carefully. The Harrington deal closes tonight."
"Not anymore."
"You walk away now, the board will destroy you."
"Then they can try."
Marcus's voice dropped.
"You have no idea what's happening."
Adrien moved closer.
"No. But Maya apparently does."
That made Marcus afraid.
And Maya saw it.
The party ended within twenty minutes.
Guests escaped into chauffeured cars while reporters gathered outside the gates.
Celeste left with her parents after screaming at Adrien in the foyer.
Marcus stayed.
He claimed he wanted to explain.
Adrien refused.
"Tomorrow morning. With lawyers."
Marcus laughed without humor.
"You've become paranoid."
"Tonight taught me that paranoia may have been overdue."
After he left, the mansion became unnaturally silent.
Catering staff cleared half-eaten food.
Florists removed arrangements meant to celebrate a wedding that would never happen.
Maya helped because standing still felt impossible.
At midnight, Elena found her stacking champagne glasses.
"Go home."
"I need to finish."
"Maya."
"I caused this."
Elena took the glass from her hand.
"No. You interrupted it."
Maya looked toward the ballroom.
"I should never have let him kiss me."
"You didn't exactly schedule it."
"I didn't stop him."
Elena raised an eyebrow.
"You're telling me this because?"
Maya's face warmed.
"Because everyone saw."
"Everyone also saw a woman confess to conspiracy."
Maya laughed weakly.
"Which do you think Facebook will care about tomorrow?"
Elena considered this.
"The kiss."
"Exactly."
Adrien appeared in the doorway.
"The internet agrees."
Maya turned.
He held his phone.
A video had already been viewed almost four million times.
The caption read:
BILLIONAIRE DUMPS FIANCÉE FOR MAID DURING ENGAGEMENT GALA.
Another headline said:
HOUSEKEEPER'S SECRET AFFAIR EXPOSED.
Maya felt sick.
"My mother is going to see this."
Adrien's expression changed.
"Your mother."
Maya nodded.
"Claire. She's at St. Vincent's."
He stared at her.
"Claire Coleman?"
"Yes."
"You told me your mother's name was Claire when we were kids."
"I remember."
Adrien lowered the phone.
Twenty-six years earlier, Maya Coleman and Adrien Whitmore had lived temporarily in the same children's crisis shelter.
Adrien had been there under an assumed name after his father removed him from his mother's unstable household.
Maya had been there because Claire had fled an abusive boyfriend with nowhere else to go.
Adrien and Maya spent forty-three days together.
Then one morning, Maya disappeared.
Adrien had searched for her years later.
The shelter records had been sealed.
He never found her.
Until tonight.
"Why didn't you tell me?" he asked.
Maya looked down.
"I didn't know it was you when I first started working here."
"And when you realized?"
"Six months ago."
"Six months?"
"You were engaged."
"What does that have to do with childhood?"
"Everything."
Adrien stared at her.
She continued.
"You were happy. You had a life. I was your employee."
"You thought I'd believe you were after money."
"I thought everyone else would."
He could not argue.
Tonight had proven her right.
"Why did you stay?"
"My mother's treatment."
Adrien flinched.
"And because Elena gave me a chance when I needed one."
He looked away.
"All these years."
"People change."
"You remembered the red door."
"I remembered you giving me half your sandwich every night because you thought I wasn't eating enough."
Adrien smiled despite everything.
"You were tiny."
"I was eight."
"You bit a boy twice your size."
"He stole your shoes."
"He gave them back."
"He needed encouragement."
Adrien laughed.
It was the first genuine sound Maya had heard from him all night.
Then his phone rang.
His expression changed when he saw the caller.
Whitmore Global's general counsel.
Adrien answered.
"Daniel?"
He listened.
The warmth disappeared from his face.
"When?"
Maya watched him turn pale.
"Don't touch anything. I'm coming."
He ended the call.
"What happened?" Maya asked.
Adrien stared at her.
"Someone accessed our merger archive twenty-two minutes ago."
Maya's stomach dropped.
"Marcus?"
"The credentials belonged to my father."
"Your father died four years ago."
"I know."
Adrien grabbed his jacket.
Before leaving, he looked back.
"The archive contained one file that could destroy Whitmore Global."
Maya swallowed.
"What file?"
"A forty-year-old ownership agreement."
"And someone stole it?"
Adrien shook his head.
May you like
"Worse."
"They changed it."
