Chapter 5 - The Grave That Hid a FortuneThey reached Greenwood Cemetery shortly after dawn.

He pushed the hospital room door shut and locked it.

"What are you doing?" Maya whispered.

"Someone just killed the lights."

"This is a hospital."

"Exactly."

The emergency generators activated seconds later, bathing the hallway in dim amber light.

Footsteps stopped outside Claire's room.

A shadow appeared beneath the door.

Maya grabbed her mother's hand.

Adrien pulled a heavy visitor's chair toward the entrance.

Someone tried the handle.

Once.

Twice.

Then a man's voice said, "Mrs. Coleman?"

Nobody answered.

"Hospital maintenance."

Adrien looked at Maya.

She shook her head.

No maintenance worker would arrive thirty seconds after a blackout.

Adrien quietly called security.

The person outside seemed to hear something.

Footsteps retreated.

By the time hospital officers arrived, whoever had been there was gone.

Security footage showed a man wearing scrubs entering through a loading entrance twelve minutes before the blackout.

He had no employee badge.

His face remained hidden beneath a surgical mask and cap.

Maya refused to leave her mother's side.

Agent Naomi Price arrived within forty minutes.

"This changes the situation," she said.

Claire looked exhausted.

"You think?"

Price pulled a chair close to the bed.

"Mrs. Coleman, we need the full story."

Claire stared at Maya.

For twenty-eight years, she had protected her daughter through silence.

Now silence had nearly brought danger directly into her hospital room.

"I met Thomas when I was nineteen," she began.

"He worked nights while studying accounting. He was brilliant. Too brilliant."

Years later Thomas joined Whitmore Engineering.

Edward Whitmore trusted him.

Harrison Harrington did not.

According to Claire, Thomas discovered irregularities inside land purchases made during the company's explosive expansion.

Shell corporations.

Fake invoices.

Inflated acquisitions.

Money disappearing through overseas entities.

At first Thomas thought Edward was stealing.

Then he discovered the opposite.

Edward had been trying to stop it.

Harrison Harrington's father, Charles, had allegedly created a hidden network siphoning company assets for years.

"When Thomas found the records," Claire said, "Charles learned about it."

Adrien's jaw tightened.

"My grandfather never told me."

"He probably never knew all of it."

"What happened?"

"Thomas copied everything."

Claire began coughing.

Maya gave her water.

"He planned to give it to federal investigators. Before he could, fourteen million dollars disappeared from a company account."

"His account?" Price asked.

Claire nodded.

"Someone framed him."

"And Edward?"

"He realized what happened. He arranged for Thomas to disappear long enough to expose Charles safely."

"Did it work?"

Claire laughed weakly.

"No."

Edward was attacked two days later.

The official explanation was a car accident.

Thomas vanished.

Claire received one phone call.

"He told me to take Maya and leave New York."

Maya's eyes filled with tears.

"He abandoned us."

"No."

Claire squeezed her hand.

"He was trying to keep you alive."

"Twenty-eight years?"

"I don't know what happened after that."

Maya pulled away.

"You let me believe he was dead."

"I needed you to stop waiting."

The words hurt more than Maya expected.

Adrien watched silently.

Claire continued.

"Three weeks later, a man came to our apartment."

"Who?"

"I didn't know his name then."

She looked at Adrien.

"I know now."

"Harrison?" Adrien asked.

Claire shook her head.

"Marcus Vale's father."

Adrien went still.

Marcus's father, Robert Vale, had been a respected attorney for the Whitmore family.

Adrien had known Marcus since college.

Their fathers had been friends.

Or so he believed.

"What did he want?" Price asked.

"The copies Thomas made."

"Did you have them?"

"No."

Claire paused.

"At least, I didn't think I did."

Maya frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Claire looked directly at her daughter.

"The night we went to the shelter, you had a little wooden music box."

Maya remembered it.

A cheap box painted blue.

Her father had supposedly given it to her.

"You lost it," Maya said.

Claire's face changed.

"No."

"Then where is it?"

"I gave it to someone."

"Who?"

Claire turned toward Adrien.

"Your father."

Adrien stared at her.

Edward Whitmore had possessed Thomas Keene's evidence.

Which meant the truth might still exist.

Agent Price immediately asked about Edward's personal storage.

Adrien mentioned a sealed archive at the family estate.

His father's belongings had remained untouched since his death.

Within an hour, FBI technicians and Whitmore security searched the archive.

They found no music box.

They found something else.

A handwritten ledger.

The final page contained a list of payments.

One name appeared repeatedly.

R. Vale.

Adrien stared at it.

Marcus's father.

Then another discovery came.

Edward had written a note beneath the payments:

ROBERT KNOWS WHERE THOMAS IS.

Adrien called Marcus.

For the first time since the party, Marcus answered.

"Where are you?" Adrien demanded.

Marcus sounded tired.

"Does it matter?"

"My father believed your father knew where Thomas Keene was."

Silence.

Then Marcus said, "You should stop looking."

"Why?"

"Because some truths destroy everyone."

"You tried to steal my company."

"I tried to survive."

"Where is Celeste?"

Another silence.

Then Marcus whispered, "Not with me."

Adrien frowned.

"What does that mean?"

"It means this isn't what you think."

"Then explain it."

"I can't."

"You spent six years pretending to be my friend."

Marcus laughed bitterly.

"Six years? Try twenty-two."

Adrien's face hardened.

"What are you talking about?"

"My father didn't introduce us accidentally."

Adrien felt cold.

Their first meeting at college.

The friendship.

Marcus joining Whitmore.

Every deal.

Every vacation.

Every moment of trust.

Planned?

"Why?" Adrien whispered.

Marcus's voice shook.

"Because I was supposed to watch you."

Maya stared at Adrien.

"Watch me for whom?"

Marcus did not answer.

Instead, he said, "Leave Maya out of this."

Adrien's eyes narrowed.

"You know who she is."

"I've known for years."

Maya grabbed the phone.

"Where is my father?"

Marcus went silent.

"MARCUS."

When he finally spoke, his voice was almost a whisper.

"Your father is the reason I disappeared."

The call ended.

Agent Price immediately began tracing it.

Too late.

Marcus had used a disposable phone.

Maya stared at Adrien.

"He knows where my father is."

"Maybe."

"No. He said my father is the reason he disappeared."

Adrien looked toward Price.

"Find Marcus."

She nodded.

Then Maya's phone rang.

Unknown number.

She answered.

"Hello?"

Nothing.

Then breathing.

A man's voice spoke.

Older.

Weak.

"Maya?"

Her entire body froze.

Nobody had called her that way since childhood.

"Maya-bug?"

Tears filled her eyes.

Only one person had ever used that name.

"Dad?"

Claire began crying.

The man on the phone breathed shakily.

"I'm sorry."

"Where are you?"

"I don't have much time."

"Where are you?"

"Listen carefully."

Maya pressed the phone tighter against her ear.

"The music box wasn't the evidence."

She looked at Adrien.

"What?"

"It was the key."

"A key to what?"

Thomas Keene whispered the answer.

"To the one place Edward knew the Harringtons would never search."

The connection crackled.

May you like

Then he said:

"Adrien's mother's grave."
