Chapter 4 - The Man Who Came for ClaireAdrien reacted before Maya did.

Reporters surrounded the headquarters on Madison Avenue.
The engagement scandal had become national news.
But inside the forty-second-floor boardroom, nobody cared about the kiss anymore.
Adrien stood at one end of a polished walnut table while seventeen directors stared at documents displayed on a wall monitor.
Daniel Chen, Whitmore Global's general counsel, spoke carefully.
"At 11:43 p.m. last night, someone accessed the corporate archive using credentials assigned to your father."
Adrien folded his arms.
"My father has been dead four years."
"Yes."
"So either we've discovered resurrection or someone kept access codes that should have been terminated."
Daniel nodded.
"Cybersecurity is reviewing both possibilities."
Nobody laughed.
Maya sat near the door.
She felt entirely out of place.
She still wore the simple navy uniform she had changed into before leaving the mansion.
Adrien had insisted she attend.
Marcus was not present.
That bothered everyone.
"What was altered?" director Samuel Blake asked.
Daniel displayed another document.
"The Whitmore Founders Agreement."
Conversation erupted.
Maya did not understand the significance.
Adrien explained quietly.
"My grandfather created Whitmore Engineering with Harrison Harrington's father."
Maya looked at him.
"Harrington?"
"Yes."
The board quieted.
Adrien continued.
"The families separated their businesses thirty-four years ago. The Founders Agreement established permanent ownership boundaries."
Daniel enlarged a paragraph.
"The original agreement gave Whitmore exclusive control of infrastructure assets developed after 1992."
"And the altered version?" Adrien asked.
Daniel's jaw tightened.
"States those assets revert to Harrington Capital upon merger."
Silence.
Maya understood immediately.
If Adrien had signed the merger documents the previous night, Celeste's family could have claimed huge portions of Whitmore Global.
"How much?" Maya asked.
Several directors looked annoyed that the maid had spoken.
Daniel answered anyway.
"Approximately six-point-eight billion dollars in assets."
Maya felt cold.
Adrien looked toward the board.
"And now perhaps everyone understands why Ms. Coleman is here."
Director Samuel Blake frowned.
"We understand she overheard a conversation."
"She prevented me from signing."
"She also created a scandal that's erased nearly nine percent from our premarket valuation."
Adrien leaned forward.
"She did not create the scandal."
"She kissed the CEO at his engagement party."
Adrien's eyes hardened.
"I kissed her."
That shut Samuel up.
Another director spoke.
"Where is Marcus?"
Nobody answered.
Daniel finally said, "His phone is off."
Adrien looked toward security chief David Ross.
"Find him."
David nodded.
Then the boardroom doors opened.
A receptionist entered.
"Mr. Whitmore, there are federal agents downstairs."
Every head turned.
Adrien remained still.
"Which agency?"
"FBI."
Ten minutes later, Special Agent Naomi Price entered with two investigators.
She placed a warrant on the table.
"We're investigating suspected corporate espionage, securities fraud, and unauthorized transfer of protected financial information."
Harrison Harrington had apparently contacted authorities at dawn.
Celeste had disappeared.
Marcus had disappeared too.
And six encrypted transfers totaling twelve million dollars had moved overnight from an account connected to a Whitmore subsidiary.
"Someone's running," Agent Price said.
Adrien looked at Maya.
"And someone knew they'd need money."
The interviews lasted hours.
Maya told Agent Price everything she remembered.
The private study.
Celeste's voice.
Marcus's response.
The phrase manufacture the scandal.
The attempted merger.
Then Price asked something unexpected.
"How long have you worked at the Whitmore residence?"
"Two years."
"Have you ever entered Mr. Whitmore's office without authorization?"
"No."
"Used his computer?"
"No."
"Handled financial records?"
"No."
"Do you know someone named Thomas Keene?"
Maya froze.
Adrien noticed.
"Who is Thomas Keene?" he asked.
Agent Price kept looking at Maya.
"My father."
The room became silent.
Adrien frowned.
"You told me your last name was Coleman."
"My mother's."
Price slid a photograph across the table.
A younger man with dark hair stood beside Adrien's father.
Maya stared.
"That's him."
Adrien looked shocked.
"You recognize my father?"
Maya nodded.
"They worked together."
Price said, "Thomas Keene served as Edward Whitmore's chief accounting officer twenty-seven years ago."
Maya felt dizzy.
"My mother told me he was an accountant."
"He disappeared after being accused of stealing fourteen million dollars."
Adrien looked at Maya.
"What?"
Maya stood abruptly.
"No. My father died when I was six."
Agent Price's eyes narrowed.
"Who told you?"
"My mother."
"Did you ever see a death certificate?"
"No."
"Attend a funeral?"
"I was six!"
Price pushed another document toward her.
Thomas Keene's Social Security number had been used in Nevada eighteen months ago.
Maya stared at it.
"He's alive?"
"We don't know."
Adrien looked equally stunned.
Price continued.
"What we do know is this: Thomas Keene was the last employee documented as having access to the original Founders Agreement before it entered long-term storage."
Maya slowly sat down.
Her childhood.
Her mother's fear.
The shelter.
The sealed records.
None of it suddenly felt accidental.
Adrien touched her shoulder.
"Did your mother ever mention my family?"
"Never."
"Think."
Maya closed her eyes.
Then remembered something.
A rainy night.
Her mother packing a bag.
Her mother's shaking hands.
A photograph burning in the kitchen sink.
And one sentence Claire Coleman had repeated until Maya promised never to forget.
"If anyone named Whitmore ever asks about your father, you say he's dead."
Maya's eyes opened.
Adrien saw the answer before she spoke.
"My mother knew."
That evening they went to St. Vincent's Hospital.
Claire Coleman looked frail beneath white sheets.
Oxygen tubes ran beneath her nose.
When Adrien entered the room, her eyes widened.
"Edward?"
Adrien stopped.
"I'm Adrien."
Claire stared at his face.
Then she began crying.
"Oh God."
Maya approached the bed.
"Mom, we need to talk about Dad."
Claire looked terrified.
"Who told you?"
"Federal agents."
Claire closed her eyes.
"Mom. Is Dad alive?"
Claire's breathing quickened.
Maya grabbed her hand.
"Please."
Finally Claire whispered, "I don't know."
"Why did you tell me he died?"
"Because dead men don't come looking for their children."
Adrien moved closer.
"What was Thomas hiding from?"
Claire stared at him.
"Your father."
Adrien's face hardened.
"My father accused him of theft."
"No."
Claire shook her head.
"Your father helped him escape."
Nobody spoke.
Claire's voice trembled.
"Thomas discovered something inside Whitmore and Harrington. Something people were willing to kill for."
Maya felt her heart pounding.
"What?"
Claire looked toward the closed hospital door.
Then whispered:
"The Harrington family never owned half the company."
Adrien stared at her.
Claire continued.
"They stole it."
Before anyone could respond, a crash sounded in the hallway.
A nurse screamed.

The hospital lights went dark.
And somewhere beyond the door, footsteps began running toward Claire's room.
