Chapter 8 - Celeste's ChoiceCeleste woke in a private hospital room with six stitches above her left eyebrow and no memory of the attack.

He had attended Edward Whitmore's funeral.

He had toasted Adrien's thirty-fifth birthday.

He had voted for nearly every expansion Adrien proposed.

And according to Marcus, Samuel had also spent decades protecting the bribery network Thomas Keene had uncovered.

Adrien ordered Whitmore Tower locked down.

Samuel had already left.

Security footage showed him exiting through the private garage twelve minutes after Maya disappeared.

His phone was disconnected.

His Manhattan apartment was empty.

His wife claimed he was traveling.

Federal agents did not believe her.

Marcus was treated for a gunshot wound under police guard.

Harrison Harrington was detained for questioning regarding Maya's abduction.

He insisted he had only ordered someone to bring her voluntarily.

Nobody found the distinction convincing.

At 2:17 a.m., Adrien and Maya entered Sublevel C.

The elevator required a mechanical key hidden inside Edward's old office.

Nobody had used it in years.

The doors opened onto darkness.

Adrien turned on his phone flashlight.

A corridor stretched beneath the tower.

Old concrete walls.

Exposed pipes.

Dust.

At the end stood a steel door.

Maya knocked.

Nothing.

"Dad?"

Silence.

She knocked again.

"My name is Maya Coleman."

Still nothing.

Then she added, "Maya-bug."

Locks clicked.

The door opened three inches.

An old man's face appeared.

Maya stopped breathing.

Thomas Keene looked nothing like the father frozen in her memory.

His hair was white.

His shoulders stooped.

A scar crossed his jaw.

But his eyes were the same.

"Maya."

She hit him.

The slap echoed through the corridor.

Thomas did not move.

Maya hit him again.

Then she began sobbing.

"Twenty-eight years."

"I know."

"Twenty-eight years!"

"I know."

"You let me think you were dead!"

Thomas opened his arms.

Maya hesitated.

Then fell against him.

He held her as though trying to recover decades in one embrace.

Adrien turned away, giving them privacy.

Inside the hidden room, Thomas had built a strange underground life.

Books lined the walls.

Old computers sat beside filing cabinets.

A small kitchen occupied one corner.

Photographs covered another wall.

Most were of Maya.

School photographs.

College.

Her first job.

Her mother's birthdays.

Maya stared.

"You watched us."

Thomas nodded.

"From far away."

"You could have called."

"No."

"Why?"

"Because people watched you too."

He pointed to another wall.

There were photographs of men watching Maya's apartment.

Cars parked outside Claire's workplace.

Unknown people near her school.

"You were monitored until you were twenty-three."

Maya felt sick.

"By Samuel?"

"By the organization he represents."

Adrien stepped closer.

"What organization?"

Thomas looked at him.

"The Meridian Circle."

The name sounded almost ridiculous.

Thomas explained.

It began as an informal network of wealthy businessmen in the 1970s.

They traded favors.

Political access.

Government contracts.

Bank financing.

Eventually favors became bribery.

Bribery became blackmail.

By the time Thomas discovered it, judges, corporate officers, lobbyists, and public officials were involved.

Charles Harrington had been a founding member.

So had Robert Vale.

And Edward Whitmore's father.

Adrien stared.

"My grandfather?"

"Yes."

Adrien looked devastated.

"My father knew?"

"Eventually."

Thomas nodded.

"Edward spent the rest of his life trying to dismantle what your grandfather helped build."

"Why didn't he go public?"

"Because they had enough evidence to destroy everyone around him."

Thomas looked at Maya.

"Including me."

He opened a locked cabinet.

Inside were hard drives.

Hundreds.

"I've spent twenty-eight years reconstructing the network."

Maya stared at him.

"Why hide?"

"Because when I tried to leave seventeen years ago, someone killed the federal prosecutor helping me."

Adrien frowned.

"Who?"

Thomas looked directly at him.

"Naomi Price's father."

Adrien and Maya froze.

Agent Price had never mentioned it.

Thomas continued.

"Naomi was seventeen."

Maya felt a chill.

"Does she know?"

"No."

"Then why is she investigating us?"

"Because Samuel Blake arranged it."

Adrien understood.

"He wanted her close."

"Yes."

"So he could control the investigation."

"Or destroy her if she discovered what her father did."

Maya paced the room.

"What does Celeste have to do with this?"

"Very little."

Thomas almost sounded sad.

"Celeste believed she was fighting for stolen Harrington property. Marcus encouraged her."

Maya looked angry.

"Marcus manipulated her?"

"At first."

Thomas explained that Robert Vale forced Marcus to befriend Adrien while they were young.

Marcus later discovered the truth.

Instead of continuing his father's work, he secretly helped Edward.

After Edward's death, Marcus maintained the facade.

His relationship with Celeste was partly designed to learn what Harrison knew.

"But he planned the fake affair," Maya said.

Thomas nodded.

"That part was real."

"Why?"

Adrien's expression hardened.

"He needed me distracted."

Thomas nodded again.

"Marcus believed the merger would force Samuel Blake into the open. He expected to stop the deal before closing."

Adrien laughed bitterly.

"So my best friend planned to destroy my engagement, damage my reputation, manipulate my fiancée, and nearly cost me my company for my own good?"

Thomas considered it.

"When you say it like that, it sounds poorly designed."

Maya almost smiled.

Adrien did not.

Then alarms sounded upstairs.

Adrien's phone rang.

Security.

"Mr. Whitmore, we have a problem."

"What?"

"Someone triggered the building evacuation."

Adrien looked at Thomas.

Smoke began entering through a ventilation grate.

Thomas's face changed.

"Samuel."

Maya looked around.

"Fire?"

Thomas rushed toward his hard drives.

"No."

He pulled one free.

"He's not trying to burn the building."

Another alarm sounded.

A mechanical voice announced:

FIRE SUPPRESSION SYSTEM ACTIVATED.

Adrien frowned.

"Why does that matter?"

Thomas looked terrified.

"Because Sublevel C uses an old gas suppression system."

Maya understood.

Not water.

Gas.

The vents opened.

A hiss filled the room.

Thomas grabbed Maya's arm.

"We have less than ninety seconds."

They ran.

The elevator was disabled.

Adrien found an emergency stairwell.

Locked.

Thomas tried his key.

Nothing.

Seventy seconds.

Maya began coughing.

Adrien kicked the door.

It did not move.

Fifty seconds.

Thomas sagged against the wall.

"I'm sorry."

"Stop talking," Maya said.

Thirty seconds.

Adrien slammed his shoulder into the steel door.

Nothing.

Then a sound came from the other side.

Metal grinding.

The door opened.

Marcus Vale stood there, pale from blood loss, one arm in a sling.

"Are you people always this difficult to rescue?"

Adrien stared at him.

"How did you get out of the hospital?"

Marcus smiled weakly.

"I've had a strange week."

They escaped into the stairwell.

Behind them, gas filled the bunker.

Thomas clutched one hard drive against his chest.

Marcus looked at it.

"Tell me that's the master copy."

Thomas shook his head.

"No."

Marcus went pale.

"Where's the master?"

Thomas smiled.

"Somewhere Samuel Blake can never erase it."

"Where?"

Thomas looked at Maya.

"I mailed it."

Maya frowned.

"To whom?"

May you like

Thomas answered:

"Celeste Harrington."
