Chapter 6 - The Price of SilenceHarrison Harrington's private estate stood two hours north of Manhattan behind iron gates and seventy acres of woodland.

Agent Price objected to Maya and Adrien coming.
Maya ignored her.
If her father had spent twenty-eight years protecting something, she refused to wait in a car while strangers uncovered it.
Adrien's mother, Victoria Whitmore, had died when he was fourteen.
Her grave sat beneath an old maple tree overlooking a stone chapel.
Maya noticed the inscription first.
BELOVED MOTHER. BELOVED DAUGHTER. THE TRUTH SURVIVES US ALL.
"Was that always there?" she asked.
Adrien stared.
"I never thought about it."
Federal technicians examined the grave without disturbing the casket.
Ground-penetrating equipment identified a narrow metal container buried beside the foundation.
They obtained emergency authorization.
Two hours later, an investigator lifted a corroded steel box from the earth.
Inside were no diamonds.
No cash.
Only paper.
Hundreds of pages.
Bank transfers.
Property records.
Signed letters.
Photographs.
Audio cassettes.
And a small blue wooden music box.
Maya covered her mouth.
Her childhood.
Sitting underground for almost three decades.
Agent Price opened the box.
Inside was a brass key.
The key opened a compartment beneath the steel box lining.
There they found the most important document of all.
The original ownership agreement.
Signed by Charles Harrington.
Signed by Edward's father.
And accompanied by a notarized amendment proving Harrington's family holdings had been reduced after investigators privately discovered Charles's embezzlement.
Harrington Capital did not own thirty-two percent of Whitmore's legacy assets as Harrison had claimed.
It owned less than seven.
Billions of dollars in supposed Harrington leverage vanished with one document.
Adrien sat on a stone bench.
Maya watched him absorb it.
His planned marriage had been built around a lie older than he was.
Agent Price approached.
"There's more."
She handed Adrien a letter.
Edward Whitmore had written it to his son but never delivered it.
Adrien opened the envelope.
His hands trembled.
Son,
If you are reading this, I failed to end what my father helped create.
He read silently for several minutes.
Then passed the letter to Maya.
Edward explained that Charles Harrington had bribed attorneys, judges, accountants, and company officers to conceal years of theft.
Robert Vale had helped him.
After Charles died, Harrison inherited the secret.
Edward attempted to confront him.
Harrison threatened to expose false evidence implicating Thomas Keene.
More frighteningly, he threatened Claire and Maya.
Edward hid the documents and sent Thomas away.
But Thomas disappeared even from Edward.
The final paragraph chilled Maya.
Robert Vale knows the truth. His son may someday be used to reach mine. If Adrien ever trusts a Vale completely, I hope someone kinder than I was warns him before it is too late.
Adrien stared at the ground.
"My father knew."
Maya sat beside him.
"He tried to protect you."
"He let Marcus into my life."
"He couldn't control everything."
"He could've told me."
Maya almost laughed at the irony.
"So could my mother."
They looked at each other.
Both had been protected by lies.
Both had paid for them.
Before either could speak, Price's phone rang.
She stepped away.
Then returned quickly.
"We found Celeste."
Adrien stood.
"Where?"
"Her apartment."
"Is she under arrest?"
Price hesitated.
"No."
Maya knew immediately.
"What happened?"
"She was attacked."
Celeste had been found unconscious in her penthouse.
No forced entry.
Her safe was empty.
Her phone had disappeared.
She survived but remained hospitalized.
The police initially suspected Marcus.
Then security footage showed Marcus entering the building at 3:11 a.m.
And leaving fifteen minutes later.
Adrien's stomach dropped.
"He attacked her?"
"We don't know."
Price showed them a still image.
Marcus leaving Celeste's building.
His shirt appeared stained.
Maya stared.
"Blood?"
"Possibly."
The scandal suddenly became a criminal investigation.
By afternoon, every major network showed Marcus's photograph.
WHITMORE EXECUTIVE WANTED FOR QUESTIONING.
Then Whitmore's board called an emergency meeting.
Stock prices were collapsing.
Several directors demanded Adrien step aside temporarily.
"The CEO's personal life has become a liability," Samuel Blake argued.
"My personal life?" Adrien asked. "Someone attempted to steal six billion dollars."
"And you kissed an employee in front of cameras."
Maya wanted to disappear.
Adrien refused.
Samuel continued.
"We have reason to believe Ms. Coleman may have manipulated access to your residence."
Adrien stood.
"Be very careful."
"Her father is a fugitive."
"Wrongfully accused."
"According to her mother."
"According to evidence buried by my father."
Samuel's expression tightened.
Then another director spoke.
"We're not accusing her. But until investigators finish—"
"No."
Adrien's voice was quiet.
"No?"
"Maya saved this company."
Samuel scoffed.
"Or positioned herself beside its owner."
Maya stood.
"I'll resign."
Adrien turned.
"No."
"Adrien."
"You didn't do anything."
"I'm the distraction."
"That's exactly what they want."
She looked around the room.
"They're questioning your leadership because of me."
"They're questioning my leadership because they're scared."
Maya removed her employee badge.
Then placed it on the table.
"I'm not letting them use my job against you."
Adrien looked hurt.
"This isn't your decision alone."
"It's my employment."
That silenced him.
Maya walked out.
Reporters waited outside.
Questions struck her like stones.
"ARE YOU SLEEPING WITH ADRIEN WHITMORE?"
"DID YOU PLAN THE KISS?"
"DID YOUR FATHER STEAL FROM THE WHITMORES?"
"ARE YOU EXPECTING MONEY?"
She kept walking.
Then a black SUV stopped beside her.
The passenger door opened.
A man inside said, "Your father sent me."
Maya froze.
"Who are you?"
"Get in if you want to see him alive."
Every instinct told her not to.
She stepped backward.
Then the man showed her a photograph.
Thomas Keene.
Older.
Gray-haired.
Sitting beside that day's newspaper.
Alive.
Maya got into the SUV.
The door locked.
The vehicle accelerated.
Only then did she realize the man beside her was holding a gun.
"Where are we going?"
He smiled.
"Not to your father."
Maya's blood went cold.
"Then who sent you?"
May you like
The man removed his sunglasses.
"Mr. Harrington would like a conversation."
