Chapter 2 - Room 814Adrian had negotiated billion-dollar real estate deals without raising his voice.

The second thing he noticed was that she was his wife.
The wife who had been missing for eleven months.
Adrian stopped in the center of the Grand Aurelia Resort lobby so suddenly that his new girlfriend walked straight into his shoulder.
“Adrian?”
He didn’t hear her.
His suitcase slipped from his hand.
Across the enormous lobby, beneath chandeliers worth more than most houses, a woman in a gray housekeeping uniform knelt beside a brass luggage cart.
One hand gripped a cleaning cloth.
The other rested protectively against an eight-month pregnant belly.
Her dark hair had been cut to her shoulders.
She was thinner.
Paler.
A faint scar ran from beneath her left ear toward her collar.
But Adrian knew her.
He knew the small birthmark beside her eyebrow.
He knew the nervous habit of pressing her lips together when she was frightened.
He knew those green eyes because for seven years, they had been the first thing he saw every morning.
“Lena?”
The woman froze.
The cloth dropped from her fingers.
For one second, their eyes met.
Shock.
Recognition.
Terror.
Then something happened that made Adrian’s blood run cold.
Lena looked away.
She lowered her head.
And began scrubbing again.
His girlfriend, Vanessa Price, followed his stare.
“Who are you looking at?”
Adrian stepped forward.
“Lena.”
This time louder.
The pregnant housekeeper flinched.
A tall man in a black resort uniform appeared from behind the reception desk.
His name badge read:
CALEB VOSS — GUEST SERVICES DIRECTOR.
“Is there a problem, Mr. Cross?”
Adrian barely glanced at him.
“That woman.”
Caleb’s expression didn’t change.
“What about her?”
“That’s my wife.”
Vanessa stiffened.
Several employees turned.
Caleb smiled politely.
“I’m afraid you’re mistaken.”
Adrian started walking.
“Lena!”
The woman stood too quickly.
Pain crossed her face.
She grabbed the luggage cart to steady herself.
Adrian reached her seconds later.
Up close, there was no possibility of a mistake.
It was Lena.
His wife.
Eleven months earlier, her SUV had been discovered abandoned near a cliff outside Santa Barbara.
The driver’s door had been open.
Her purse remained inside.
There had been blood on the steering wheel.
Police searched the coastline for fourteen days.
Nothing.
No body.
No confirmed sighting.
Eventually, investigators told Adrian what everyone else had begun believing.
Lena Cross was probably dead.
Adrian had refused to accept it for months.
Then grief became exhaustion.
His business demanded attention.
His family pushed him to move forward.
Vanessa, a longtime family friend, had been there during the darkest nights.
Four months ago, Adrian finally allowed himself to date again.
And now the dead woman was standing in front of him.
Pregnant.
Terrified.
“Lena,” Adrian whispered.
The woman stared at the floor.
“My name is Maria.”
His breath caught.
“What?”
“I think you have the wrong person, sir.”
Her voice was different.
Not completely.
Softer.
Controlled.
But he knew that voice too.
Adrian stepped closer.
“What happened to you?”
“I don’t know you.”
“Look at me.”
She wouldn’t.
Vanessa approached behind him.
“Adrian, she said you’re mistaken.”
“No.”
He reached gently for Lena’s arm.
She recoiled violently.
“Don’t!”
Every conversation in the lobby seemed to stop.
Adrian stared.
A dark bruise showed beneath her sleeve.
Lena immediately pulled the fabric down.
Caleb Voss stepped between them.
“Sir, you’re upsetting our employee.”
“She’s my wife.”
“She’s a temporary housekeeper named Maria Santos.”
Adrian’s jaw hardened.
“Then show me her employment file.”
“That would violate company policy.”
“I own fifteen percent of this resort.”
Caleb’s smile disappeared.
That was true.
Cross Development had invested millions in the Grand Aurelia three years earlier.
Adrian had never visited personally.
Until today.
He looked around the lobby.
Security guards had appeared near both exits.
Not rushing.
Watching.
Waiting.
Something was wrong.
Very wrong.
Adrian turned back toward Lena.
Her hands were trembling.
Then he noticed something else.
A thin silver necklace beneath her uniform.
He knew that necklace.
He had given it to her on their fifth wedding anniversary.
A tiny oval pendant.
Inside it were two engraved initials.
A + L.
Adrian reached toward it.
Lena stepped back.
Caleb caught her elbow.
Hard.
She winced.
Adrian’s expression changed instantly.
“Take your hand off her.”
Caleb released her.
“I was helping her balance.”
“No, you weren’t.”
Lena looked at Adrian.
For half a second, the fear in her eyes cracked open.
He saw desperation beneath it.
A silent plea.
Then she whispered, barely moving her lips.
“Please.”
Adrian leaned closer.
“What?”
Her eyes flicked toward a black security camera above the elevator doors.
Then toward Caleb.
Then back to Adrian.
“Please,” she whispered again. “Pretend you were wrong.”
Adrian felt as though the floor shifted beneath him.
“Lena—”
Her face crumpled.
“If they know I remember you…”
She stopped.
Caleb was watching.
Lena swallowed.
Then louder, she said, “I’m sorry, sir. You have mistaken me for someone else.”
She grabbed her cleaning cart.
As she turned away, Adrian saw a white envelope hidden beneath the towels.
For one second, her hand brushed it.
Then she pushed the cart past him.
Caleb followed her.
Adrian remained still.
Vanessa touched his shoulder.
“This is insane.”
Adrian looked toward the security camera.
Then at Caleb disappearing down the staff corridor with his missing wife.
His pregnant missing wife.
A woman who had just begged him to pretend they had never met.
And Adrian suddenly understood something far worse than believing Lena had died.
Someone had kept her alive.
Someone had hidden her here.
May you like
And judging by the terror in her eyes…
they were still controlling her.
