Chapter 8 - The House on Willow RidgeAdrian called his mother from the helicopter.

Charles Cross.
His father.
The man whose funeral Adrian had attended at twenty-nine.
The man whose empty coffin had been buried beneath an oak tree because investigators recovered almost nothing from the mountain crash.
Alive.
Older.
But unmistakable.
“You knew?” Adrian asked Lena.
She shook her head.
“I saw him once at Saint Maren. I thought I was hallucinating.”
Marcus placed another file beside the photo.
“The plane crash was staged.”
Adrian looked up.
“What?”
“The aircraft did crash. But Charles Cross wasn’t on it.”
“Passenger manifest?”
“Altered.”
Adrian stood slowly.
“Why?”
Marcus exhaled.
“Because your father and Victor Hart were partners.”
The room went silent.
Cross Development’s earliest growth had come through coastal land acquisitions.
Ports.
Hotels.
Industrial properties.
Hart Maritime handled shipping and transport.
Their families had known each other for decades.
Adrian remembered Victor at childhood parties.
Charles and Victor drinking bourbon after dinner.
Lena’s father arguing with both men about contracts.
Had the entire thing been connected from the beginning?
Marcus continued.
“Your father diverted company funds through Hart subsidiaries. Lena’s father discovered it. Daniel later found the records.”
“And Dad disappeared before Daniel’s accident.”
“Exactly.”
Lena whispered, “Victor protected him.”
Adrian felt physically sick.
His father had let his wife and son bury him.
He had watched from somewhere while Adrian’s mother grieved.
Then he had helped destroy Lena’s family.
Hope stirred in the bassinet.
Adrian looked at his daughter.
That tiny movement hardened something inside him.
The past could wait.
Daniel couldn’t.
Federal investigators coordinated with Mexican authorities.
The medical transport had crossed through Tijuana seven hours earlier.
Its destination appeared to be an abandoned rehabilitation center outside Ensenada.
Adrian wanted to go immediately.
Lena did too.
Her doctor refused.
“You nearly died twelve hours ago.”
“My brother might die today.”
“You cannot travel.”
Lena tried standing.
Pain folded her forward.
Adrian caught her.
“That’s enough.”
“Don’t tell me—”
“I’m bringing Daniel back.”
She stared at him.
“Promise?”
“Yes.”
“No matter who is there?”
Adrian looked at the photograph of his father.
“No matter who.”
Vanessa entered just before Adrian left.
She kept her distance from Lena.
“I owe you an apology.”
Lena studied her.
“You owe me several.”
Vanessa nodded.
“I do.”
“I know Victor paid you.”
“Yes.”
“And you dated my husband.”
Vanessa swallowed.
“Yes.”
Adrian started to speak.
Lena lifted a hand.
“No. I want to hear her.”
Vanessa’s voice trembled.
“When Victor first approached me, I believed you were dead. He said Adrian’s obsession with finding you was ruining him and damaging the company. I took the contract.”
“For money.”
“Yes.”
“At least that answer is honest.”
Vanessa looked down.
“Dating Adrian wasn’t part of it. But I knew he was vulnerable.”
Adrian’s jaw tightened.
“I cared about him.”
Lena’s eyes filled with a tired sadness.
“I’m sure you did.”
Vanessa began removing something from her handbag.
A small recording device.
“Victor talked too much on the island.”
She handed it to Marcus.
“I recorded him.”
Marcus played the audio.
Victor’s voice filled the room.
He discussed Lena’s inheritance.
Daniel.
Dr. Vale.
And Charles Cross.
Then one sentence changed everything.
Charles wants Adrian brought in alive. He still believes the boy can be useful.
Adrian stared at the recorder.
Lena whispered, “He’s expecting you.”
“Good.”
“No, Adrian.”
“He thinks I’m still his son.”
“You are.”
“No.”
Adrian looked at her.
“Not after today.”
The operation began after sunset.
Mexican federal agents approached from the highway while Adrian, Nolan, and two tactical officers entered through a dry riverbed behind the facility.
The building looked abandoned.
It wasn’t.
Fresh tire tracks crossed the dust.
Power hummed behind boarded windows.
Inside, they found medical rooms.
Restraints.
Drug cabinets.
Empty beds.
Then a voice came through an old speaker.
“Adrian.”
He froze.
His father’s voice.
Older.
Still familiar.
“Welcome.”
Adrian looked toward the ceiling camera.
“Where is Daniel?”
“Always straight to business.”
“Where is he?”
“Third floor.”
Nolan whispered, “Trap.”
Adrian knew.
They climbed anyway.
At the third-floor landing, Charles Cross stood at the far end of a corridor.
Silver hair.
Dark suit.
No weapon visible.
Adrian felt twenty-nine again.
Waiting for a father who had never come home.
Charles smiled.
“You look like your mother.”
Adrian nearly hit him.
Instead he said, “You watched her bury you.”
“She survived.”
“She mourned you for five years.”
Charles’s face remained cold.
“Emotion passes.”
Adrian finally understood the kind of man standing before him.
“How could you do this?”
“Build an empire?”
“Destroy families.”
Charles shrugged.
“Empires require sacrifice.”
“Lena?”
“A complication.”
“My daughter?”
“An opportunity.”
Adrian stepped forward.
Charles lifted one finger.
A door opened.
Caleb appeared behind Daniel’s wheelchair.
Gun pressed against Daniel’s neck.
Daniel’s face was gaunt, but his eyes were alert.
“Adrian Cross,” he whispered.
Adrian looked at him.
“Your sister is alive.”
Daniel’s eyes filled instantly.
“She escaped?”
“She’s safe.”
“And the baby?”
“Your niece was born this morning.”
Daniel closed his eyes and began to cry.
Charles seemed annoyed.
“Touching.”
Adrian looked at his father.
“Let him go.”
“You first.”
“What do you want?”
“Cross Development.”
Adrian almost laughed.
“You disappeared for nine years to come back for my company?”
“My company.”
“No. You abandoned it.”
Charles’s expression tightened.
“I created everything you have.”
“And I fixed everything you broke.”
Caleb pushed the gun harder against Daniel.
Charles said, “Sign control back to me and Daniel goes free.”
Adrian looked at Daniel.
Then at his father.
“Okay.”
Nolan whispered, “Adrian—”
“It’s okay.”
Charles smiled.
A document was placed on a nearby table.
Adrian walked toward it.
He picked up the pen.
Then the lights went out.
Marcus had triggered the facility power cut remotely.
Gunfire erupted.
Adrian dropped.
Daniel threw himself sideways from the wheelchair.
Caleb fired blindly.
Nolan tackled him.
Federal officers poured through the stairwell.
Emergency lights flashed red.
Charles ran.
Adrian chased him.
“Dad!”
Charles reached the roof.
A helicopter waited.
He climbed aboard.
Adrian grabbed the landing skid as it lifted.
Charles looked down.
For the first time, fear appeared on his face.
He kicked Adrian’s hand.
“Let go!”
Adrian held on.
Then remembered Lena.
Hope.
Daniel.
The family waiting for him.
He released the skid.
He fell six feet onto the roof as the helicopter rose into the night.
Charles escaped.
But downstairs, Daniel Hart was finally free.
And when Adrian helped him into the transport vehicle, Daniel whispered something disturbing.
“Charles isn’t running.”
Adrian looked at him.
“What?”
Daniel’s face was grim.
“He’s going home.”
“Where?”
May you like
Daniel stared at him.
“To your mother.”
