Chapter 4 - Locker 317The laundry basement smelled of detergent, hot metal, and steam.

They slipped through the bathroom doorway.

Lena opened a narrow service panel Adrian would never have noticed.

Behind it was a concrete stairwell.

“Go,” she whispered.

“What about you?”

“I’ll handle Caleb.”

“No.”

“Adrian, if both of us disappear from this room, he’ll know.”

“He already knows something.”

“Not enough.”

The suite door opened.

“Maria?”

Lena pushed Adrian into the stairwell.

“Trust me once.”

He caught her wrist.

“Once?”

Pain crossed her face.

“Please.”

Adrian released her.

The panel closed between them.

Through the thin wall, he heard Caleb enter.

“Why are you in this room?”

Lena answered calmly.

“I was cleaning.”

“At midnight?”

“I couldn’t sleep.”

A pause.

“You’re lying.”

Adrian clenched his fists.

Then Caleb said something quieter.

“Remember who controls Daniel’s medication.”

Adrian felt ice spread through his chest.

Lena answered, “I remember.”

“Good.”

Adrian descended the stairs before rage made him do something reckless.

Back inside 816, Vanessa was waiting.

“You’re bleeding.”

Adrian looked down.

His palm had been cut where his fingernails dug into it.

“Call Marcus.”

Ten minutes later, Adrian explained everything.

Marcus didn’t interrupt.

When Adrian finished, he said, “Daniel Hart died in 2020.”

“Apparently not.”

“I’ll reopen everything.”

“Find the accident report.”

“Already doing it.”

Adrian looked at Vanessa.

She was sitting near the window, strangely quiet.

“Also find every doctor associated with this resort,” Adrian continued. “Clinics, private medical contractors, wellness centers, anything.”

“Got it.”

“And discreetly send two people here.”

“Already booked.”

Adrian almost smiled.

Marcus had been with him twelve years.

He knew how Adrian thought.

Morning brought the first crack in the resort’s story.

Marcus sent Adrian a photograph.

It showed Caleb Voss standing beside another man at a charity dinner three years earlier.

The second man was Dr. Warren Vale.

Adrian recognized the name.

Vale had been Lena’s neurologist after a car accident seven years earlier.

The accident had left her with temporary memory problems.

Nothing severe.

Three weeks of headaches.

Then she recovered fully.

Why was her former neurologist connected to Caleb?

Marcus sent another message.

Vale also served as medical consultant for Hart Maritime until 2020.

Hart Maritime belonged to Lena’s family.

Or it had.

Before her father died and the company collapsed.

Adrian stared at the screen.

Lena’s missing brother.

Her old doctor.

A resort director.

All connected.

At breakfast, Caleb approached the table personally.

“Mr. Cross. Ms. Price. I trust you slept well.”

“Beautifully,” Vanessa replied.

Adrian smiled.

“Perfect.”

Caleb seemed almost disappointed.

“We were concerned after yesterday’s misunderstanding.”

“Forget it.”

“I’m glad.”

A server poured coffee.

Adrian glanced casually toward the hallway.

Lena was nowhere visible.

“Your housekeeper,” he said. “Maria.”

Caleb’s eyes sharpened.

“What about her?”

“I wanted to apologize properly.”

“She’s been reassigned.”

“Because of me?”

“For her comfort.”

Adrian nodded.

“I understand.”

Caleb walked away.

Vanessa waited until he disappeared.

“Where did they move her?”

“That’s what we’re finding out.”

Marcus’s security team arrived disguised as a married couple.

Nolan Briggs, a former federal investigator, and Tara Briggs, who had spent eight years in military intelligence.

By noon, Tara had discovered Lena was not listed in any official employment database.

Maria Santos did exist.

But the Social Security number belonged to a seventy-four-year-old woman in New Mexico.

“This isn’t regular labor trafficking,” Tara said quietly in Adrian’s suite. “Someone built a deliberate fake identity around your wife.”

Nolan added, “And there’s another issue.”

He placed photographs on the table.

A fenced structure sat behind the resort, mostly hidden by palm trees.

“What is that?”

“Staff wellness housing.”

Vanessa frowned.

“Looks like a prison.”

Nolan nodded.

“Keycard access. Covered windows. Private guards.”

Adrian stared at the images.

“Can you get inside?”

“Eventually.”

“No eventually.”

Nolan met his eyes.

“We rush this and they move her.”

Adrian hated that he was right.

At 3:17 p.m., Adrian received an unexpected message.

No sender.

Only coordinates.

The location pointed toward the beach below the resort.

He arrived ten minutes later.

Lena stood beneath an abandoned lifeguard tower.

Wind pushed her hair across her face.

“How did you get away?”

“I told them the baby was making me sick.”

Adrian looked toward the resort.

“You don’t have long.”

“No.”

“Tell me about Daniel.”

Lena inhaled shakily.

“The boating accident wasn’t an accident.”

“What happened?”

“My father discovered money missing from Hart Maritime. Millions. He suspected Daniel.”

“Did Daniel steal it?”

“No. Daniel discovered someone else was stealing it.”

“Who?”

Lena looked at him.

“My uncle.”

Adrian remembered Victor Hart.

Lena’s father’s younger brother.

Charming.

Political connections.

The kind of man who remembered everyone’s birthday and never paid for his own drink.

“He staged Daniel’s death?”

“With help.”

“Caleb?”

“And Dr. Vale.”

Lena wrapped her arms around herself.

“My father learned Daniel was alive six months before Dad died. He was going to expose everything.”

“Your father died from a heart attack.”

“That’s what they said.”

Adrian understood.

“And your disappearance?”

“I found Daniel.”

Her voice cracked.

“I saw him alive.”

“What happened after?”

“They took me.”

“Who is they?”

“Victor owns this resort through shell companies.”

Adrian felt sick.

Grand Aurelia.

A resort Cross Development had helped finance.

His money had helped build the place where his wife was being imprisoned.

Lena continued.

“They kept me drugged for months. Dr. Vale used medication that confused me. He kept telling me you had divorced me. That you hated me. Sometimes I believed him.”

Adrian stepped closer.

“I never stopped looking for you.”

“I know that now.”

Tears filled her eyes.

“I found newspapers in the laundry room.”

He glanced at her belly.

The question neither wanted to ask remained between them.

Lena saw it.

“The baby.”

Adrian looked away.

“I don’t need to know now.”

“Yes, you do.”

She reached for his hand.

Then placed it against her stomach.

The baby moved.

Adrian’s throat tightened.

Lena whispered, “She’s yours.”

He looked at her sharply.

“What?”

“I was three weeks pregnant when they took me.”

Adrian could barely speak.

“You knew?”

“No. Not until later.”

His hand trembled against her belly.

A daughter.

His daughter.

Alive.

For eleven months, he had grieved two people without knowing either existed.

“Why didn’t they—”

“Because Victor needs her.”

“Needs her for what?”

Lena’s expression changed.

“My father’s trust.”

“What trust?”

“The controlling shares of Hart Maritime were never lost.”

She stepped closer.

“They transfer to my first biological child.”

Adrian understood immediately.

Victor hadn’t kept Lena alive out of mercy.

He was waiting for the baby.

“What happens after she’s born?”

Lena began crying.

“That’s why you have to help me.”

She looked directly into his eyes.

“Because Victor plans to take my daughter.”

A car door slammed above them.

Lena turned.

Two security guards were coming down the beach stairs.

She shoved something into Adrian’s hand.

A small brass key.

“Laundry basement. Locker 317.”

Then she stepped away.

“Whatever happens, don’t let them know I told you.”

“Lena—”

The guards reached them.

One grabbed her arm.

Adrian moved forward.

The second guard blocked him.

Lena shook her head desperately.

Don’t.

So Adrian stood there.

And watched them drag his pregnant wife back toward the resort.

But this time he had something he hadn’t possessed eleven months ago.

A name.

May you like

A motive.

And a key.
