Chapter 9 - HopeLena woke to an empty bassinet.

No answer.

Again.

Nothing.

Security stationed outside her house answered immediately.

“Mr. Cross, everything is normal.”

“Go inside.”

“We were instructed not to disturb Mrs. Cross after midnight.”

“I’m instructing you now.”

A pause.

Then movement.

A doorbell.

Knocking.

“Mrs. Cross?”

Silence.

The guard’s voice changed.

“Door’s unlocked.”

Adrian felt dread rise.

“Go in.”

Thirty seconds later:

“She’s gone.”

Adrian closed his eyes.

On the kitchen table, security found a handwritten note.

Adrian, your father came home. I need answers. Don’t follow me. — Mom

Charles hadn’t kidnapped Eleanor Cross.

He had convinced her to go willingly.

That was worse.

Daniel, exhausted and weak, sat across from Adrian inside the helicopter.

“He’ll use her.”

“I know.”

“Your father never saw people as people.”

“You knew him?”

Daniel gave a bitter laugh.

“For years.”

He explained.

Charles had helped Victor move stolen money offshore.

When Lena’s father, Harrison Hart, discovered financial discrepancies, Daniel investigated quietly.

He learned Charles had faked his death because federal authorities were getting too close.

Victor arranged the escape.

Years later, Daniel planned to expose everything.

Instead, his boat exploded.

He survived.

Victor’s men pulled him from the water.

Not to save him.

To erase him privately.

For six years, Daniel had been moved between clinics.

Sedated.

Isolated.

Threatened.

Then Lena found him by accident.

A former Hart employee recognized a nurse from one of Daniel’s facilities and contacted her.

“Lena came alone,” Daniel said.

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

“She should’ve called me.”

“She wanted proof first.”

“That sounds like her.”

Daniel smiled faintly.

“She got that from Dad.”

Then his expression darkened.

“Victor followed her.”

Adrian stared out the window.

Eleven months of suffering because Lena had tried to save her brother.

By morning, Marcus traced Charles’s helicopter to a private airstrip near Lake Tahoe.

The Cross family had owned a property there for thirty years.

Willow Ridge.

Adrian hadn’t visited since childhood.

His mother still held the deed.

Charles knew the estate better than anyone.

When Adrian arrived with federal agents, the house looked empty.

Then the front door opened.

Eleanor Cross stepped outside.

Adrian ran to her.

“Mom.”

She stared at him, confused.

“What are you doing here?”

“Where is he?”

“Inside.”

“You came willingly?”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“He’s alive.”

“I know.”

“Adrian, your father is alive.”

She said it like a miracle.

Adrian hated what he was about to do.

“Mom, Dad is a criminal.”

She slapped him.

The sound stunned them both.

Eleanor covered her mouth.

“I’m sorry.”

Adrian didn’t react.

“He let you mourn him.”

“He explained.”

“He helped kidnap Lena.”

Eleanor froze.

“What?”

“He helped Victor imprison her.”

“No.”

“He helped hide Daniel for six years.”

“No.”

“He threatened my daughter.”

Eleanor stared.

“Your daughter?”

Adrian’s expression softened.

“You have a granddaughter.”

Eleanor began crying.

“Lena’s alive?”

“Yes.”

“And she had—”

“A little girl.”

The front door opened again.

Charles appeared.

“Enough.”

Eleanor turned.

Charles looked almost exactly like the man she had loved.

That was his greatest weapon.

“Charles,” she whispered. “Tell him he’s wrong.”

Charles said nothing.

Her face changed.

“Tell him.”

Charles sighed.

“You always needed everything simplified.”

Eleanor stepped backward.

“What did you do?”

“What was necessary.”

Adrian moved between them.

Charles held a pistol at his side.

Federal agents raised weapons.

Charles smiled.

“If I wanted to shoot my son, I would’ve done it years ago.”

“You tried to steal my company.”

“To protect it.”

“You helped Victor kidnap my wife.”

“Victor became reckless.”

“You knew.”

“Yes.”

Eleanor made a sound like something inside her broke.

Charles glanced at her.

“Don’t be dramatic.”

That phrase destroyed whatever illusion remained.

Eleanor walked toward Adrian.

Charles lifted the gun.

“Stay where you are.”

She stopped.

“You would point a gun at me?”

Charles looked irritated.

“I am trying to keep control.”

“Control.”

Eleanor laughed through tears.

“I spent five years sleeping on your side of the bed because I couldn’t stand how empty it felt.”

Charles said nothing.

“I kept your clothes.”

“Eleanor—”

“I blamed myself.”

Her voice cracked.

“I wondered if you died angry with me.”

Adrian watched his father finally look uncomfortable.

Eleanor continued.

“And you were alive.”

“It was complicated.”

“No.”

For the first time in Adrian’s life, his mother looked at Charles without love.

“It was cruel.”

Sirens approached in the distance.

Charles looked toward the road.

His expression hardened.

Then he seized Eleanor and pressed the gun against her ribs.

Adrian stepped forward.

“Don’t.”

Charles pulled her toward the rear entrance.

“Call them off.”

“Dad.”

“CALL THEM OFF!”

Adrian raised his hands.

Eleanor looked at her son.

Very calmly, she said, “Don’t.”

Charles snapped, “Quiet.”

Then Eleanor stomped hard on his foot.

Charles recoiled.

She drove her elbow backward.

The gun fired into the ceiling.

Adrian tackled him.

They crashed through an end table.

The pistol slid away.

Charles punched Adrian twice.

Adrian hit him back.

Years of betrayal exploded in every movement.

Finally, agents dragged them apart.

Charles lay face-down on the wooden floor as handcuffs closed around his wrists.

He looked up at Adrian.

“You think this ends because you arrested me?”

Adrian wiped blood from his lip.

“It ends because you don’t control anyone anymore.”

Charles smiled.

“You still don’t understand.”

“What?”

“Victor prepared for this.”

Adrian’s stomach tightened.

Charles laughed.

“While you were chasing me, he was taking back the one thing that matters.”

Adrian’s phone rang.

Hospital security.

He answered.

“Mr. Cross…”

The man’s voice shook.

“There’s been an incident.”

Adrian felt the world stop.

“Lena?”

“Your wife is here.”

Adrian closed his eyes in relief.

May you like

Then the guard continued.

“But your daughter is missing.”
