Chapter 10 - What the Cameras RevealedThe arrests made national news.

At first, she thought a nurse had taken Hope for routine testing.
Then she saw the open door.
A security guard unconscious in the hallway.
And the hospital bracelet cut cleanly beside the bassinet.
Lena screamed.
Within three minutes the maternity floor locked down.
Within seven, police filled the building.
Within ten, Lena ripped the IV from her arm and tried to leave.
Vanessa stopped her.
“You can barely stand.”
“My baby is gone.”
“They’re searching.”
“Move.”
“Lena.”
“MOVE!”
Vanessa stepped aside.
Lena made it six feet before collapsing against the wall.
She hated her body.
Hated the pain.
Hated the weakness.
Most of all, she hated herself for sleeping.
“I should have stayed awake.”
Vanessa crouched beside her.
“You had surgery.”
“I should’ve known.”
“Known what?”
“That Victor would never stop.”
Security footage showed a nurse entering the maternity wing at 5:42 a.m.
The badge was legitimate.
The woman was not.
She had worn a surgical mask and cap.
She exited through a service elevator carrying Hope inside a medical transport bassinet.
A waiting ambulance left twelve minutes later.
The ambulance had been stolen.
Adrian reached the hospital shortly after noon.
Lena saw him coming down the corridor.
She tried standing.
He reached her first.
Neither spoke.
Lena collapsed into him.
“I lost her.”
“No.”
“She was right beside me.”
“Lena.”
“I promised her.”
Adrian held her face.
“You did not lose our daughter.”
Tears streamed down Lena’s cheeks.
“They took her.”
“And we’re bringing her back.”
Daniel had been transported to the same hospital for treatment.
When he heard Hope had been taken, he demanded to see Adrian.
“I know where Victor will go.”
Adrian entered his room.
“Tell me.”
Daniel struggled upright.
“There’s a Hart Maritime facility outside Monterey.”
“Victor doesn’t control Hart Maritime anymore.”
“He controls the tunnels.”
“What tunnels?”
“Dad built emergency storage beneath the original warehouse in the eighties.”
Lena appeared in a wheelchair behind Adrian.
Adrian frowned.
“You shouldn’t be out of bed.”
“Try stopping me.”
Daniel almost smiled.
Then he continued.
“The facility was closed fifteen years ago, but Victor kept using it.”
“For what?”
“Documents. Cash. People.”
Adrian immediately called Marcus.
Federal agents surrounded the warehouse by evening.
No Victor.
No baby.
But they found a room recently occupied.
Diapers.
Formula.
A portable crib.
Lena touched one of the blankets.
Still warm.
“They were here.”
Tara found tire tracks leading toward an old service road.
The road ended at a marina.
One boat was missing.
Victor had gone back to the sea.
Adrian remembered Saint Maren.
“Another island?”
Daniel shook his head.
“No.”
Lena looked at him.
“Dad’s yacht.”
Adrian frowned.
“What yacht?”
Daniel explained.
Harrison Hart had owned a 140-foot vessel called Legacy.
After his death, Victor claimed it had been sold.
It hadn’t.
The vessel operated under a Panamanian registration.
Marcus found it ninety miles offshore heading south.
Toward international waters.
Adrian chartered the fastest helicopter available.
Authorities warned him that boarding a moving private vessel at night was dangerous.
He didn’t care.
Lena intended to go too.
“No,” Adrian said.
“She’s my daughter.”
“You nearly died yesterday.”
“And Hope might die tonight.”
Daniel spoke quietly.
“Lena.”
She turned.
“I lost six years because I thought fighting meant doing everything myself.”
He reached for her hand.
“Let Adrian do this.”
Lena’s eyes filled.
Adrian knelt beside her wheelchair.
“I need you here when I bring her back.”
She pressed her forehead against his.
“Bring her back.”
“I will.”
The helicopter located Legacy shortly after midnight.
Below them, the yacht cut through black water.
Coast Guard vessels approached from two directions.
Spotlights illuminated the deck.
Victor stood at the stern.
Holding Hope.
Adrian’s blood turned cold.
The helicopter hovered.
A loudspeaker ordered Victor to stop.
He lifted Hope higher.
Everything froze.
Adrian clipped into a harness.
The rescue officer grabbed his arm.
“You cannot go down there.”
“That’s my daughter.”
“Sir—”
“Get me onto that boat.”
Thirty seconds later, Adrian descended toward the moving yacht.
Wind tore at him.
Victor watched from below.
Hope cried in his arms.
Adrian hit the deck hard.
Crew members scattered.
Victor backed toward the railing.
“Stay there!”
Adrian stopped.
“Give her to me.”
Victor smiled.
“All of this because of one baby.”
“She’s your grandniece.”
“She’s a legal instrument.”
Adrian felt pure hatred.
“You never deserved your family.”
Victor’s face twisted.
“Your father understood.”
“My father is in handcuffs.”
That landed.
Victor’s confidence flickered.
“You’re lying.”
“He chose himself. Like he always did.”
Victor looked toward the helicopter.
Coast Guard officers were descending.
He knew it was over.
His eyes changed.
Adrian recognized the decision one second before it happened.
Victor stepped onto the stern platform.
Ocean behind him.
Hope in his arms.
“No!”
Adrian moved forward.
Victor held the infant over the water.
“One more step.”
Adrian stopped.
Hope screamed.
“Victor.”
“You took everything.”
“You took it from yourself.”
“I built the Hart empire.”
“No. Your brother did.”
Victor’s face twisted with decades of jealousy.
“He got everything.”
“So you destroyed him?”
“He looked down on me.”
“He trusted you.”
Victor’s eyes filled with rage.
Then a voice came through the yacht’s speaker system.
Daniel.
Marcus had connected him remotely from the hospital.
“Uncle Victor.”
Victor froze.
Daniel continued.
“You failed.”
“Daniel?”
“You tried to kill me.”
Victor looked around wildly.
“You locked me away for six years.”
“Daniel, you don’t understand.”
“I understand exactly.”
Victor’s grip loosened slightly around Hope.
Adrian took one slow step.
Daniel continued.
“My father loved you.”
Victor began crying.
It was the first genuinely human reaction Adrian had seen from him.
“He chose you.”
“No,” Daniel said. “You spent your whole life believing love was a competition.”
Adrian moved another step.
Victor noticed.
He jerked Hope backward.
Adrian lunged.
Victor lost his balance.
Hope slipped from his arms.
Adrian dove.
His body slammed against the deck.
His hands closed around his daughter inches before she struck the metal edge.
Victor fell backward over the railing.
Coast Guard officers threw a rescue line.
Minutes later, they pulled him from the water.
Alive.
Handcuffed.
Defeated.
Adrian didn’t watch.
He was sitting on the deck holding Hope against his chest.
She cried.
Then quieted.
May you like
Adrian kissed her forehead.
“Your mom is going to kill me for taking this long.”
