Chapter 2 - The Camera Above Her HeadAdrian did not leave Claire immediately.

The second was the pain.

It ripped through her side so violently that, for one terrifying second, she forgot how to breathe.

Her hand flew to her seven-month-pregnant belly as she collapsed onto the polished marble floor of the private hospital suite.

Above her, Vanessa Cole stood perfectly still.

Her red evening gown shimmered beneath the chandelier lights. Her blonde hair was flawless. Her diamond earrings glittered as though she were posing for photographs instead of standing over a pregnant woman she had just kicked.

Claire struggled to inhale.

“Why?” she whispered.

Vanessa’s face hardened.

“Because you never understood when to leave.”

Claire stared at her.

Twenty minutes earlier, she had been downstairs at the Harrison Children’s Foundation gala, smiling beside her husband while donors shook their hands and photographers called their names.

Her husband was Adrian Bennett.

Thirty-nine years old.

Founder and CEO of Bennett Global.

Magazine covers called him one of the youngest self-made billionaires in America.

Claire simply called him Adrian.

And Vanessa had spent nearly a year trying to make Claire believe Adrian should have belonged to her.

The private suite had been arranged because Claire had experienced dizziness during the gala. A physician had ordered her upstairs to rest.

She had expected quiet.

Instead Vanessa followed her.

At first, it had been insults.

Then accusations.

Then a shove.

Now Claire lay on the floor struggling to protect the child inside her.

Vanessa stepped closer.

“You think being pregnant makes you untouchable?”

Claire’s eyes filled with fear.

“Stay away from me.”

Vanessa laughed.

“You trapped him.”

“I married him three years before I became pregnant.”

“That doesn’t mean he loves you.”

Claire tried to rise.

Pain shot through her abdomen.

She gasped and fell back against the marble.

Vanessa crouched.

“For months, I’ve watched him choose you.”

Claire stared at her.

“You mean your lies didn’t work.”

The smile disappeared from Vanessa’s face.

Claire immediately knew she had made a mistake.

Vanessa grabbed her arm.

“You spoiled little—”

The door burst open.

“Claire!”

Adrian Bennett stood in the doorway.

Everything stopped.

He was still wearing the black tuxedo from the gala downstairs, but the calm expression he wore in public had vanished.

His eyes went immediately to his wife.

Claire was lying on the floor.

One arm covered her stomach.

A thin streak of blood marked her elbow where shattered glass had cut her skin.

Vanessa was kneeling beside her.

Adrian crossed the room.

“What happened?”

Vanessa stood before Claire could answer.

Then something extraordinary happened.

Vanessa began to cry.

“She attacked me.”

Claire looked up in disbelief.

Adrian froze.

Vanessa staggered backward dramatically.

“She went crazy, Adrian. I tried to calm her down and she threw a glass at me.”

Claire’s mouth fell open.

“What?”

Vanessa pressed a trembling hand to her chest.

“She accused me of sleeping with you.”

“You kicked me!”

Vanessa shook her head.

“No. Claire, please stop.”

Adrian looked between them.

For perhaps three seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Claire doubled over.

“Adrian…”

His face changed instantly.

He dropped beside her.

“What is it?”

“My stomach.”

Vanessa stepped forward.

“She’s pretending.”

Adrian turned.

The look he gave Vanessa made her stop.

“Get a doctor.”

“Adrian—”

“Now.”

A nurse rushed in moments later after hearing the commotion.

Everything became frantic.

A wheelchair.

Blood-pressure equipment.

Doctors.

Questions.

Claire barely heard any of it.

She only felt Adrian holding her hand as they rushed toward maternity triage.

“Stay with me,” he kept saying.

“My baby…”

“Our baby is going to be okay.”

Neither of them knew that yet.

Behind them, Vanessa remained in the destroyed suite.

Her tears disappeared.

She picked up her purse.

She was almost smiling.

If Claire lost the baby, everyone would think the pregnant woman had suffered an emotional breakdown.

Vanessa had rehearsed the story for weeks.

There were no witnesses.

No security camera inside a private patient suite.

No evidence.

Only Claire’s word against hers.

At least, that was what Vanessa believed.

Downstairs, hospital security director Marcus Hill received an unusual alert.

A maintenance technician had installed a temporary ceiling camera in Suite 1704 that morning after several expensive pieces of jewelry had disappeared from VIP rooms.

The camera was scheduled to be removed the following day.

Marcus opened the recording.

He watched Vanessa enter.

He watched the argument.

He watched the shove.

Then he watched Vanessa raise her foot and kick Claire Bennett directly in the side.

Marcus stopped breathing.

“Oh my God.”

He immediately locked the footage against deletion.

Then his phone rang.

It was Adrian Bennett.

Marcus answered.

“Mr. Bennett?”

Adrian’s voice was frighteningly calm.

“My wife says Vanessa Cole attacked her.”

Marcus stared at the frozen image on his screen.

Vanessa’s heel was inches from Claire’s body.

Marcus swallowed.

“Sir…”

Adrian waited.

Marcus looked again at the video.

Then he said the words that would destroy Vanessa Cole’s carefully constructed lie.

“You need to come downstairs.”

May you like

“Why?”

“Because the entire thing was recorded.”
