Chapter 10 - The TestimonyVanessa survived.

A closed ferry terminal along the New Jersey waterfront.

Claire was instructed to arrive at noon.

No police.

No Adrian.

No tracking devices.

Thomas warned that he would kill Vanessa if he detected surveillance.

Federal agents had no intention of obeying.

But Thomas had decades of security experience.

Conventional tracking would fail.

Instead they used something simpler.

Claire’s wedding ring.

Not electronics.

A microscopic chemical tracer placed beneath the inner band.

Invisible.

Detectable by specialized equipment at short range.

A second transmitter was hidden inside the lining of Claire’s coat, designed to remain dormant until activated manually.

Adrian hated every second.

At 11:42, Claire stood near the vehicle.

Her pregnancy was visible beneath a dark blue dress.

Adrian held her face.

“You can stop.”

“So can Thomas.”

“That isn’t what I mean.”

“I know.”

“I don’t care about the company.”

“I know.”

“I don’t care about catching him.”

“I know.”

“Then don’t go.”

Claire looked at him.

“I care about the woman he’s holding.”

Adrian’s expression tightened.

“She kicked you.”

“Yes.”

“She could have killed our child.”

“Yes.”

“And you’re risking yourself to save her.”

Claire’s eyes filled.

“I’m not doing it because she deserves me.”

“Then why?”

“Because I deserve to be the kind of person who doesn’t become Thomas.”

Adrian closed his eyes.

Then kissed her.

Long.

Carefully.

As if memorizing her.

At noon, Claire arrived at the terminal.

Alone.

At least visibly.

A phone waited on a bench.

It rang.

“Walk east,” Thomas instructed.

Claire obeyed.

She passed abandoned ticket booths.

Broken glass.

Rusting railings.

“Turn left.”

A delivery van waited behind the terminal.

Driver door open.

“Get inside.”

Claire’s pulse raced.

This was not expected.

Agents had planned for a stationary exchange.

Claire entered.

Thomas’s voice came through a speaker.

“Drive.”

She drove north.

Surveillance teams followed from extreme distance.

Then Thomas directed her into a tunnel.

GPS disappeared.

Radio contact weakened.

“Stop.”

A man wearing a mask approached the van.

He opened Claire’s door.

“Out.”

Claire complied.

He scanned her electronically.

No transmitter detected because the coat device remained dormant.

He took her phone.

Then blindfolded her.

Claire heard another vehicle.

She was driven for approximately twenty minutes.

She counted turns.

Right.

Left.

Long straight section.

Railroad crossing.

Finally they stopped.

Someone helped her down steps.

Her hand stayed protectively over her stomach.

When the blindfold came off, Thomas stood before her.

He looked almost peaceful.

“Welcome.”

Claire stared.

“Where’s Vanessa?”

He gestured.

Across the room, Vanessa sat tied to a chair.

Her lip was split.

One eye swollen.

But alive.

She started crying when she saw Claire.

“No. Why did you come?”

Claire looked at Thomas.

“Untie her.”

He smiled.

“You misunderstand your negotiating position.”

“What do you want?”

“Adrian.”

“You asked for me.”

“I asked for what would bring him.”

Claire understood.

She had been bait.

Thomas expected Adrian to disobey instructions.

He was probably already watching approach routes.

But Adrian was following the federal plan.

Barely.

Thomas checked his watch.

“He should arrive soon.”

Claire smiled faintly.

Thomas noticed.

“What?”

“Adrian trusts me.”

“Love makes trust temporary.”

“You think he’s coming.”

“He will.”

“No.”

Thomas’s expression changed.

Claire continued.

“He knows I told him not to.”

For the first time, Thomas looked uncertain.

Vanessa stared at Claire.

Claire stepped closer to Thomas.

“You built this entire revenge plan around one idea.”

“And what idea is that?”

“That everyone eventually betrays everyone else.”

Thomas said nothing.

“You thought Adrian would betray the plan to save me.”

“He will.”

“You thought Vanessa would betray Gregory because she wanted Adrian.”

“She did.”

“You thought Gregory would betray Nathan because he wanted money.”

“He did.”

Claire’s voice softened.

“And you betrayed Nathan because you wanted revenge more than you wanted him alive.”

Thomas’s eyes flashed.

“Be careful.”

Claire continued.

“You don’t understand people who choose each other without ownership.”

Thomas suddenly grabbed her arm.

Vanessa screamed.

“Don’t touch her!”

Claire remained still.

Thomas stared into her eyes.

“You believe goodness protects you?”

“No.”

Claire’s heartbeat pounded.

“I believe it protects what’s left of me after people like you try to destroy it.”

His grip loosened.

She had shaken him again.

Thomas stepped back.

“You remind me of my daughter.”

Claire did not expect that.

“What happened to her?”

“She left.”

“Why?”

“Her mother poisoned her against me.”

“Or she saw what revenge was turning you into.”

Thomas slapped the table beside him.

“Enough.”

Vanessa flinched.

Claire did not.

Thomas walked away.

That gave Claire the moment she needed.

She rubbed her thumb against the inside of her coat sleeve.

The dormant transmitter activated.

Outside, twelve miles away, a federal receiver caught the signal.

Daniel looked at Adrian.

“We have her.”

The coordinates appeared.

Industrial property near Bayonne.

Agents mobilized.

Inside, Thomas ordered the masked man to move Vanessa.

Claire deliberately stumbled.

Both men looked at her.

“My stomach.”

Thomas froze.

Claire bent forward.

Vanessa panicked.

“She needs a doctor!”

Thomas hesitated.

He had planned psychological terror.

A pregnant hostage having a medical crisis introduced unpredictability.

Claire dropped to one knee.

Thomas stepped toward her.

“Claire?”

She breathed sharply.

It was partly performance.

Partly real.

Stress had triggered tightening across her abdomen.

Vanessa began fighting the restraints.

“You idiot! If something happens to that baby, Adrian will hunt you until the day you die!”

Thomas snapped, “Quiet!”

Then sirens erupted outside.

Thomas froze.

His eyes moved to Claire.

“You.”

She stood slowly.

“You underestimated my husband.”

Thomas pulled a handgun.

Vanessa screamed.

Federal agents breached the outer building.

Thomas grabbed Claire.

The gun pressed against her shoulder.

“Move.”

He forced her toward a rear corridor.

Vanessa shouted.

“Claire!”

Claire looked back.

Their eyes met.

Then something changed in Vanessa.

She stopped struggling against the ropes.

Instead she deliberately tipped the chair sideways.

The crash distracted Thomas.

Claire drove her elbow backward.

The gun fired.

The bullet struck concrete.

Agents shouted.

Thomas dragged Claire through the doorway.

Vanessa kicked the fallen gun magazine away.

“Go!” she screamed.

Thomas and Claire disappeared into the corridor.

Adrian entered the main room seconds later.

He saw Vanessa tied to the floor.

“Where is she?”

Vanessa pointed.

“Tunnel!”

Adrian ran.

Daniel followed.

At the far end of the service tunnel, Thomas pulled Claire toward a waiting boat.

Water churned beneath the pier.

Police lights flashed in the distance.

Claire struggled.

Thomas raised the gun.

“Stop fighting.”

“You’re trapped.”

“I’ve escaped worse.”

He pushed her toward the boat.

Then a voice echoed through the tunnel.

“Thomas!”

Adrian.

Thomas stopped.

Claire closed her eyes.

He came.

Of course he came.

Thomas smiled bitterly.

“I told you.”

Adrian emerged from the shadows.

Hands visible.

“No weapon.”

Thomas pressed the gun against Claire.

“Stay back.”

Adrian stopped.

“You want me.”

“I want you to understand.”

“I understand.”

“No, you don’t.”

Thomas’s voice broke for the first time.

“You inherited everything.”

Adrian looked at him.

“And you decided that gave you the right to take everything from everyone else.”

“My life was destroyed!”

“So you tried to kill my unborn child?”

Thomas flinched.

Adrian continued.

“You’re not punishing my father.”

His voice was calm.

“You’re becoming the man you claim he was.”

Thomas’s hand trembled.

Police closed in.

Claire felt the gun shift.

Then Thomas whispered.

“I had a daughter once.”

Adrian said nothing.

“She was six when I went to prison.”

His eyes filled.

“She stopped visiting.”

Claire turned slightly.

“You can stop now.”

Thomas looked at her.

“It’s too late.”

“No.”

For a second, she believed he might surrender.

Then Vanessa appeared behind Adrian.

Still bleeding.

Hands now free.

“Thomas.”

He looked past Claire.

Vanessa stepped forward.

“You used me.”

Thomas’s face hardened.

“You volunteered.”

“You told me Adrian loved me.”

“You wanted to believe it.”

“You told me Claire stole my life.”

“You had no life worth stealing.”

Vanessa recoiled as though struck.

Something inside her broke.

Thomas raised the gun toward her.

Claire grabbed his wrist.

Adrian lunged.

The gun fired again.

Someone screamed.

Thomas fell.

Agents flooded the tunnel.

Adrian grabbed Claire.

“Are you hit?”

She shook her head.

May you like

Across the concrete floor, blood spread beneath someone’s body.

It was Vanessa.
