Chapter 4 - Someone Inside the HospitalAdrian stared at the message.

She asked Adrian to meet her in a public place.
Not his office.
Not the hospital.
Not anywhere associated with Bennett Global.
“Vanessa checks people,” she said. “Phones. Cars. Credit cards. Everything.”
Adrian arranged for two attorneys and a retired federal investigator from his corporate security team to accompany him to a quiet twenty-four-hour diner across town.
Before leaving the hospital, he returned to Claire’s room.
She was awake.
Her heartbeat monitor glowed softly beside her bed.
Adrian told her about Gregory’s access to the hospital system.
Then he told her about Elena.
Claire listened without interrupting.
When he finished, she asked, “You’re going?”
“Yes.”
“Good.”
Adrian seemed surprised.
“I thought you’d tell me not to.”
“I’m tired of being afraid of people who lie better than I do.”
He sat beside her.
Claire looked at him.
“For months I thought I was becoming paranoid.”
Adrian said nothing.
She continued.
“The messages. The photos of you and Vanessa. Every time I asked you, you told me she was just trying to get attention.”
“She was.”
“But it worked.”
The truth sat painfully between them.
Vanessa had created distance.
Not enough to destroy their marriage.
Enough to weaken it.
Adrian squeezed Claire’s hand.
“This ends now.”
An hour later, he entered the diner.
Elena Price was sitting in the back booth.
She was twenty-eight, with brown hair pulled beneath a baseball cap and a laptop bag clutched against her chest.
She looked exhausted.
Adrian sat opposite her.
His attorneys took the next booth.
Security remained near the entrance.
Elena swallowed.
“You brought people.”
“I’m not hiding this meeting.”
“That’s probably smart.”
She opened the laptop.
“I worked for Vanessa for three years. Personal assistant, social media, travel, errands, everything.”
“Why are you talking now?”
Elena looked down.
“Because I saw the video online.”
Adrian stiffened.
“What video?”
“Someone leaked a still image from the hospital.”
His attorneys immediately began checking their phones.
Elena continued.
“It doesn’t show the kick clearly. Just your wife on the floor.”
Adrian’s expression darkened.
“Who leaked it?”
“I don’t know.”
Elena opened a folder.
“But I know how Vanessa works.”
The documents inside were disturbing.
Screenshots of anonymous email accounts.
Photographs of Adrian leaving restaurants.
Photographs cropped to make it appear he was walking beside Vanessa when several people had actually been present.
Draft messages.
Fake social media accounts.
Elena clicked one.
A familiar message appeared.
Claire had received it six months earlier.
YOUR HUSBAND STILL MEETS VANESSA WHEN YOU’RE ASLEEP.
Adrian stared.
“You sent this?”
Elena’s eyes filled with shame.
“Vanessa ordered me to create the account.”
“Why?”
“She wanted Claire insecure.”
Adrian leaned back.
“You helped terrorize my pregnant wife.”
“I know.”
“Why should I believe anything else you say?”
“Because I kept everything.”
She removed a small external drive.
“Every instruction.”
“Why?”
“Insurance.”
Elena looked toward the window.
“Vanessa destroys people when they stop being useful.”
She pulled up spreadsheets.
Payments moved through consulting firms.
Invoices from Bennett Global subsidiaries.
Adrian immediately recognized several project codes.
“What is this?”
“Gregory Cole approved vendor contracts through one of your European divisions.”
“He isn’t authorized to do that.”
“Not officially.”
Adrian studied the transfers.
Millions.
Then more millions.
“What does Vanessa have to do with this?”
Elena opened another folder.
Luxury properties.
Jewelry purchases.
A yacht.
A townhouse in Manhattan.
“Those were purchased through companies connected to Vanessa.”
Adrian’s voice became dangerously quiet.
“How much?”
“Approximately forty-eight million dollars.”
One attorney leaned over the booth.
“We need copies.”
“You can have them.”
Elena’s hands trembled.
“There’s more.”
She opened an audio file.
Vanessa’s voice came through the laptop speakers.
“If Claire signs the charitable asset restructuring, Adrian will notice the missing accounts.”
Gregory answered.
“Then stop her.”
“How?”
“I don’t care. She trusts you.”
Another pause.
Then Vanessa:
“She doesn’t trust me.”
Gregory laughed.
“Make Adrian look unfaithful. Pregnant women are emotional. She’ll stop paying attention to foundation paperwork.”
Adrian felt sick.
Claire had chaired the family charitable trust.
Three months earlier, she had questioned why several grants had been routed through unfamiliar vendors.
Vanessa’s harassment had escalated almost immediately after that.
The anonymous texts.
The staged photographs.
The rumors.
It had not only been jealousy.
It had been strategy.
Elena closed the laptop.
“She was supposed to make Claire doubt you until after the audit cycle.”
Adrian stared at her.
“Then why attack her tonight?”
Elena looked frightened.
“Because Claire scheduled a forensic review.”
“How do you know?”
“Vanessa found out this morning.”
Adrian’s pulse changed.
Claire had told him two days earlier that she planned to bring in an independent accountant.
He had been distracted by a merger negotiation and told her to do whatever she thought necessary.
He had no idea how dangerous the decision had been.
Elena leaned closer.
“Vanessa said Claire had become a problem.”
“What exactly did she say?”
Elena hesitated.
Then she opened a final recording.
Vanessa’s voice.
“If she loses the baby, Adrian won’t care about an audit.”
Silence.
Gregory responded.
“You’re not seriously suggesting—”
“I’m saying tragedy changes priorities.”
The recording ended.
Adrian remained motionless.
Nobody at the table spoke.
Then his phone rang.
Claire.
He answered immediately.
“Claire?”
No response.
Only noise.
A nurse shouting.
Running footsteps.
“Claire?”
Finally another voice came through.
“Mr. Bennett?”
It was Dr. Patel.
Adrian stood.
“What happened?”
“Your wife is experiencing contractions.”
His blood went cold.
“Is the baby—”
“We’re moving quickly.”
Adrian was already walking toward the door.
Dr. Patel continued.
“You need to come back to the hospital.”
He ran.
Outside, rain had started falling.
His security team rushed toward the SUV.
Before Adrian climbed inside, Elena grabbed his sleeve.
“There’s something else.”
He turned.
“Vanessa told Gregory she had a backup plan.”
“What plan?”
“I don’t know.”
Elena looked terrified.
“But whatever happened tonight wasn’t supposed to be the end.”
Adrian stared at her.
Then his phone vibrated.
A text message appeared from Claire’s number.
ADRIAN, COME ALONE.
He stopped.
