Chapter 8 - The TrapDaniel knocked Claire to the floor.

At 1:14 a.m., an electronic order had been entered for a medication used in specific obstetric situations.
For Claire, at that dosage, with her medical history, it could have caused dangerous complications.
Dr. Patel had rejected it because the order made no sense.
“I assumed it was an input error,” she admitted.
“Who entered it?” Adrian asked.
The hospital traced the physician credential.
It belonged to Dr. Howard Keller.
He had been asleep at home.
His login had been stolen.
The terminal used to submit the medication order was located inside an administrative office.
The badge that opened the room?
Thomas Reed’s former hospital consulting pass.
Expired eighteen months earlier.
Yet someone had reactivated it.
Marcus Hill was furious.
“That requires senior administrative access.”
Federal investigators returned to Gregory.
He finally identified the hospital insider.
Vice president of operations Kenneth Doyle.
Doyle had accepted payments from Gregory for years.
Nothing dramatic at first.
Priority rooms.
Private guest lists.
Access records.
Then larger favors.
Doyle was arrested before lunch.
Under questioning, he broke within two hours.
“Thomas told me Claire needed to be scared,” Doyle said.
“Did he tell you to change medication?”
“No.”
“Who did?”
“Vanessa.”
The investigators looked at each other.
Vanessa had entered a false medical order after the assault.
Not merely to hurt Claire.
Potentially to cause the pregnancy to fail.
The case against her escalated.
Aggravated assault.
Conspiracy.
Computer fraud.
Potential attempted murder charges pending prosecutorial review.
And still nobody knew where she was.
Thomas contacted Adrian again that evening.
This time through a video call.
His face appeared on a secure laptop.
He looked almost exactly as Adrian remembered.
Silver hair.
Calm eyes.
Tailored dark jacket.
The man who had stood behind Eleanor at Christmas dinners.
The man who once helped Adrian choose a wedding gift for Claire.
“You look tired,” Thomas said.
Adrian stared at him.
“You’re going to prison.”
“Possibly.”
“Vanessa too.”
Thomas smiled.
“Vanessa was always expendable.”
Claire sat beside Adrian.
Daniel and federal investigators monitored the call.
Thomas continued.
“She thought the story was about love.”
Claire’s expression hardened.
“And what is it really about?”
“Debt.”
Thomas leaned toward the camera.
“Adrian’s father built Bennett Global with money that should have belonged to me.”
Adrian shook his head.
“You were convicted of stealing.”
“Because Charles Bennett controlled the books.”
“You had appeals.”
“He controlled the lawyers.”
Thomas’s bitterness was old enough to feel fossilized.
“I spent twenty-seven months in prison. My wife left. My daughter stopped using my name.”
Claire listened carefully.
“So you infiltrated the Bennett family.”
“Yes.”
“For fifteen years.”
“Yes.”
“And Nathan?”
Thomas smiled.
“Nathan was easy.”
Adrian’s jaw tightened.
“You manipulated him.”
“I told him the truth. Your father always preferred you.”
“You used him.”
“He used me too.”
“What happened to him?”
For the first time, Thomas’s expression changed.
“Nathan became frightened.”
“He was going to confess?”
“He wanted out.”
Adrian stared.
“The plane crash.”
Thomas did not answer.
“You killed him.”
Still silence.
Then Thomas said, “Nathan made a series of unfortunate decisions.”
Federal agents exchanged looks.
Claire understood.
Thomas had likely arranged the crash.
“You murdered Adrian’s brother.”
Thomas’s eyes moved toward her.
“You continue to misunderstand survival, Claire.”
“No.”
She leaned closer.
“I understand you perfectly.”
Adrian touched her arm.
Claire continued.
“You spent thirty years convincing yourself revenge was justice.”
Thomas’s smile disappeared.
“You know nothing about what was taken from me.”
“And our baby took something from you?”
Silence.
“My child?”
Claire’s voice shook now.
“What did my unborn child do to deserve being used in your revenge?”
Thomas looked away.
That tiny movement told Claire more than anything else.
There was still a boundary inside him.
Buried.
Weak.
But present.
She pressed.
“You used Vanessa because she was jealous. Gregory because he was greedy. Nathan because he was angry.”
Thomas’s eyes returned.
“And you?”
Claire asked.
“What did you use in yourself?”
He stared.
Claire answered for him.
“Grief.”
The call abruptly ended.
Daniel looked at her.
“You got to him.”
Adrian disagreed.
“No.”
He had known Thomas too long.
“That means she scared him.”
Thomas had expected money.
Power.
Legal retaliation.
Not Claire confronting the emptiness beneath his revenge.
Federal agents triangulated part of the call.
New Jersey coastline.
A radius of eleven miles.
They searched warehouses, marinas, hotels.
Nothing.
Then Elena Price remembered something.
“Vanessa once mentioned a house.”
“What house?” agents asked.
“She called it the Grey House.”
“Where?”
“I thought it was a joke. Somewhere near the water.”
Elena searched old photographs on her cloud backup.
One image showed Vanessa drinking champagne on a terrace.
Behind her was a distinctive lighthouse.
Investigators identified it.
Sandy Hook.
Property records showed a nearby waterfront estate owned by one of Thomas’s shell companies.
Police raided the property at dawn.
Empty.
Food still warm.
Two glasses on the table.
Blood on a bathroom towel.
And in the basement, investigators found walls covered with photographs.
The Bennett family.
Adrian as a teenager.
Eleanor leaving restaurants.
Claire arriving at work before she met Adrian.
Wedding photographs.
Ultrasound images.
Claire stared at them in horror.
Thomas had been watching them for years.
On another wall were detailed timelines.
Nathan.
Gregory.
Vanessa.
Claire.
One page contained the heading:
FINAL PRESSURE EVENT.
Underneath were several scenarios.
DIVORCE.
MISCARRIAGE.
PUBLIC SCANDAL.
CORPORATE COLLAPSE.
Then a final option circled in red.
ABDUCTION.
Adrian’s heart stopped.
Daniel found something else.
A photograph taken that morning.
Claire leaving the hospital.
Timestamped less than two hours earlier.
Thomas still had eyes on them.
Adrian immediately ordered Claire moved to a secure location.
She refused his penthouse.
Too predictable.
Instead federal agents relocated them to a private residence.
Only six people knew the address.
That evening, Adrian cooked pasta badly because Claire was hungry and neither trusted food delivery.
For twenty minutes they almost felt normal.
Claire sat at the kitchen island smiling as Adrian burned garlic.
“You’re terrible at this.”
“I employ people.”
“That isn’t a cooking skill.”
“It solves cooking.”
She laughed.
The sound nearly broke him.
He stopped moving.
Claire saw his expression.
“What?”
“I almost lost you.”
Her smile faded.
Adrian walked around the counter.
“And I didn’t see it happening.”
“You couldn’t.”
“I should have.”
“You’re my husband, Adrian. Not my prison guard.”
He put his forehead against hers.
“I believed success meant I could protect everything.”
Claire touched his face.
“Sometimes protection means believing me before there’s proof.”
He closed his eyes.
“I know.”
Her voice softened.
“I know you do now.”
Then the lights went out.
Adrian froze.
Daniel shouted from another room.
“Everybody down!”
Glass shattered somewhere outside.
Claire dropped behind the kitchen island.
Security weapons came out.
A vehicle engine screamed away.
Power returned thirty seconds later.
No intruder.
No gunshot.
Only a small metal object had been thrown through the front window.
Daniel retrieved it carefully.
A phone.
It began ringing.
Adrian answered on speaker.
Thomas’s voice.
“You keep hiding her.”
Adrian looked at Claire.
“What do you want?”
Thomas replied calmly.
“Tomorrow morning, you will transfer control of Bennett Global into a trust I designate.”
Adrian laughed once.
“You’re insane.”
“No.”
Thomas paused.
“I’m finished being patient.”
“Or what?”
Thomas’s answer came quietly.
“I take something money cannot replace.”
Then the line disconnected.
Claire looked down.
A red laser dot appeared on the kitchen wall.
May you like
Then moved slowly across the room.
Toward her stomach.
